“Big corporations in the US, and the hedge funds that are their biggest investors, do not care about people, the environment or the future. All they care about are maximizing earnings TODAY. They are like hungry hogs at the feed trough. What the US needs is powerful leadership at the top, and we are not getting enough of it from Obama. Can you imagine where we'd be today if Bush and Cheney, instead of invading Iraq to steal their oil, a dying resource, had invested 200,000 US jobs and $1 trillion into finding new alternativ e/renewabl e energy technologies for the future??? But again, it was all about the short term and nothing about the long term. How can you be optimistic about the future when nobody thinks beyond tomorrow??”

America Without a Middle Class

“I have been waiting for some economist to tell me how the US economy, which is 70% consumer spending, will ever recover if consumers continue to not have any money to spend.
The growth of the US economy in the past 60 years has paralleled the expansion of the middle class in the US. The middle class was created and expanded through "escalator" careers within the same company for 30 years untl retirement.
Now "vulture capitalists" tell corporate management to cut costs at all costs, leading to massive overseas outsourcing of jobs that used to make up "escalator careers' for our kids and their kids.
If this trend is allowed to continue and not REVERSED with domestic job credits and overseas job penalties, the middle class will surely fade away in the US, and with it, the vaunted US economy. These "vulture capitalists" won't care, they will have their billions and overseas residences when our economy dries up.
It's the beginning of the end of the grand US experiment in Democracy. Tragic.”

“Sadly, like so many aspects of the promising Obama Presidency, this situation has Rahm Emanuel's fingerprints all over it, and - like everything else Rahm Emanuel touches - this is all about getting Obama re-elected in 2012.
Obama and Emanuel KNOW that if they rejected McCrystal(sp?)'s request for up to 40,000 troops, and instead did what's best for America: start withdrawing from that quicksand known as Afghanistan, both McCrystal and Petraeus would resign, and Petraeus would run against Obama in 2012. Not that he won't resign and run anyhow, BTW.
Barring an accumulation of evidence to the contrary, Independent voters, such as myself, have to start wondering if Obama is indeed turning into a replay of the Jimmy Carter Presidency it shouldn't be, not the FDR PResidency is could have been. American needs the latter, not the former!”

“Afghanistan bankrupted the Soviet Union and Bin Laden said the same thing would happen to the US. It's happening. Obama should feel no obligation to continue wasting American lives and treasure to perpetuate Dick Cheney's invasion of Iraq for its oil and Afghanistan for that natural gas pipeline.
Waging war against two countries, to seize their natural resources, was a last desperate act of an empire in decline, relying on a finite, declining energy source.
It's horrifying to ponder where the US would be if Bush and Cheney had instead invested $1 trillion and 200,000 US jobs into finding all sorts of alternative and renewable energy sources; instead of investing those lives and that reasure into grabbing the 2nd largest oil reserves in Earth. But no, like so many politicians, they were beholden to large corporations that want to rape our economy for today, and to Heck with tomorrow.
Unless our leadership changes radically, the decline of the American experiment will continue.. . Maybe that's why the Book of Revelations makes no mention of a Eagle in its allegories ....”

“ORKT: You can read the whole story by going back and reading the Project For A New America Century manifesto, basically authored by Cheney (until GHWB told him to take his name off it), that says America, as the "lone remaining superpower" has the right to invade a country, like Iraq, and sieze its natural resources of those resources are deemed strategically necessary to preserve America's superpower status. At the time he wrote this, Cheney knew Iraq had the 2nd largest oil reserves in Earth, and Saddam was threatening to switch from the US Dollar to the Euro as the medium of exchange for OPEC oil. Cheney knew that invading Iraq and removing Saddam would fix both problems and give the US access to a vast supply of cheap oil. That, sir ,is why we invaded Iraq. Cheney's secret Energy Task Force consisted of Big Oil looking at the maps of Iraq and dividing up the spoils of our invasion. As for Afghanistan, there are plans for a major natural gas pipeline across that country, again masterminded by Dick Cheney.”

What I meant is that is that we, as observers, tend to look at each situation and debate with the story that has been presented to us, and I think the 'actual' debate on that situation (regardless of the driver) is using a completely different story and a completely different set of 'facts'.”

“FDR knew the Republican Party was aligned against him (for their own reasons), so he ignored them and got passed the greatest policy implementations in US history, ushering in the Middle Class in America. Obama ought to follow FDR's lead. Republicans can read: They know if Obama gets health care for 47 million voters and improves health care for 100 million more, the Republican Party will be obsolete for 25 years, like it was after FDR. There's no such thing as bipartisanship anymore, its big business against the people. Basically class warfare. Why not tell it like it is??”

The situation is identical right now. As soon as Republicans see that Medicare for anyone who wants it is a winner, they will hop onboard, or become completely irrelevant for 12+ years!”

Votes really don't mean much to them anymore especially in the south, where they vote for them no matter what they do(or more often, don't do). Democrats will have to go this alone, this time. The republicans won't lift a finger to help this country, and unforunately, that fact will be forgotten by the mid-term elections.”

It could all be so simple: Open Medicare to ANYONE who wants it, and charge an actuarially reasonable monthly premium for anyone under 65. Elimination of the employer madate would bring a lot of healthy people into the Medicare risk pool, thereby cross-funding the cost of sick people's treatment.”
