Bloomberg Rails Against Times Square Shooting, Gun Violence

“I just love that meme the NRetArds love to spew about conceal- carry gun ownership. Zero facts to back up actual statistics in real- life urban situations.
This isn't the wild west anymore, much as you American Rifleman kool aid drinking Luisi L'Amour brainwashed yahoos think it is.( and its the readers of not the writer I indict). It's one thing for a store owner to protect his property, in a high density population area. Its another for the general populace to walk around like a bunch of hopped up pistol packing cowboys. People can be disarmed, can spook in the heat of the moment and shoot the worng person. Cops go through a lot of training to avoid this scenario. Having a gun is no guarentee. Hey if they can carry guns, why not survival knives, box cutters and samurai swords.”

“15 studies done by newspapers, the government, polling organizations, universities, and even some vehement gun controllers indicate that firearms are used defensively between 100,000 and 20 miliion times each year.
People are rarely disarmed of their firearms.
In defensive shootings, civilians have a better record than police of hitting their target and not hitting bystanders.
No one has ever said having a firearm is a gaurantee.”

“Bloomberg doesn't oppose legal gun ownership- he just opposes concealed-carry. We have gun ranges here in NYC. He's opposed to the "bullet road" trade route that stems from the south that puts these weapons into the hands of ppl like Martinez in big cities.
It's also an issue of population density. Too much collateral damage to risk.
Law - abiding citizens who arm themselves illegally are not law abiding, now are they? Funny, but handgun violence in the UK isn't equal to ours. Wonder why?”

“Exactly. Why is it that these arguments always revolve around a handful of small studies of tiny, backwoods towns, while they seem to completely ignore the fact that every other industrialized nation that has strict, enforced gun laws has lower gun-related crime than us by far? I mean, how can one be true and not the other?
(If anyone is curious, I think they're both suspect arguments, but that's another matter)”

“My understanding is that to even own a firearm in NYC requires a permit. To obtain this permit, not only must one have a clear criminal history, but also must submit multiple character references, which finally must be deemed adequate by some bureaucrat who may arbitrarily deny permitting. Where the only people who can legally own a gun are those hand-picked by the mayor's officers, it is easy for him to espouse support of "legal" gun ownership.
Regarding the UK, crimes using firearms are certainly less common, but still persist despite their laws. In fact, UK police now make foot patrols carrying machine guns due to the spike in shootings. Here are a few articles on gun crime in the UK.
