Franken: Dems Unified Behind 'Historic' Health Reform Legislation
Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 09:01:31 in Politics
“Whenever the government privatizes any aspect of the government, the costs skyrocket. The private sector is greedy and find any reason to raise prices. Even to use torte reform as an argument is a load! Judgments are down, but the cost of malpractice insurance keeps skyrocketing! It's not the lawsuits that are driving those costs up, but again -- it's the private insurance companies. And they'd just love to restrict our right to hold pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and doctors accountable for mistakes or outright negligence.”

“If Fedex Freight can't get a package to a place at the guaranteed time, they change the time, so they can say it was delivered on time!
Also, you can mail a letter for 42 cents, but UPS and Fedex charge up to 500 times more.
The post office is in trouble because of technology -- they've been around for hundreds of years and are now in trouble because people no longer send letters, but use email. Most people pay their bills online. To use them as an argument is disingenuous.
Republicans always scream about how the government can't run anything, then get elected and prove it!”

Small Business Lending Programs To Get $30B In Bailout Assistance

“That will really help the unemployed. If you don't have a job you don't pay taxes. The fact is that people need to start working. I know that companies here in Colorado are doing their best to keep from hiring, even if it means paying tons of overtime. My husband and I are working tons of hours, and I know we are lucky to be working. But everyone at my job is so stressed out and injuries have gone way up at my husband's company because people are so exhausted from 60+ hour weeks.
The big corporations want to keep unemployment down, because then they can keep salaries down, and profits high. The banks are making more money borrowing money from the fed at 0% and using it to gamble, so why would they want to lend to small business?
Small business was gutted by the Bush administration. He gave the contracts that were supposed to go to small businesses to those subsidiaries of big corporations, which is not supposed to happen. I don't know if that practice has changed, but the Small Business Association was all but ignored by Bush!”

“I know it's hard for republicans to understand what it takes to lower the deficit. That's why any republican who has been elected president in the last 50+ years has raised the deficit. They don't know how to lower it. Thus, their opinions on deficit lowering measures are irrelevant. Much like their opinions on everything else -- especially the economy!”

What's In Health Care Proposals For 5 Americans
Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 14:23:52 in Politics
“My husband has great health insurance and we pay a small premium; his employer pays the rest. From what I understand the senate bill allows health insurance to charge 3 times more for older customers, and we are older, but no close to 65. If that's the case, our insurance premiums will be going up and we can be pay out up to 8% of our income which would be over $4000 more a year than what we pay right now. Since we're living paycheck to paycheck, just like everyone else, that would probably break us!
If that is the case, and we are mandated to buy insurance from the insurance cartel, we will probably drop it and pay the fine since it will be cheaper. We've thought of all the scenarios if one of us should get sick, including divorcing and taking the other person off of our house, so we don't lose everything we have. I don't know what we'll do if we both should get sick -- I suppose lose everything and go bankrupt!
If that's the case, please tell me how this flaming piece of crap would help us? It won't, and there are many people out there are in the same shape as we are. We both take medications, but our doctor told us that we could send our prescription through mail order to Canada, and it would be affordable.”

“Well, the only way out of this, as Keith Olbermann said last week, is to refuse to pay the fine. That's what I would do, and probably will do if I am in that position once this flaming piece of crap kicks in.
I lived in Britain when there was a popular revolt against the poll tax. People refused to pay. People went to jail. Rioters tore up Central London over the poll tax.

That's where we're headed, and maybe it's about time. Maybe we need to be reminded that government of the people, by the people and for the people is what we're supposed to have, not of by and for the corporations.”

“Take it up with your employer. I doubt he's going to drop you or change anything. And you need to read the Bill because you're confused about the age situation. As it now stands, your insurance company is probably charging you far more than 3 times more unless it's a group policy, in which case nothing will change.
I think before obsessing over scenarios you need to have a clear grasp of what's going on.
And you're already buying insurance from the insurance cartel.”
