“You illustrate the entire problem in a nutshell. Every critical comment is racist, and if anyone doesn't agree, THAT person is either racist or stupid? Now you're making as much sense as a teabagger.
This is known as CRYING WOLF, and guess what? -- it is COUNTERPRODUCTIVE to the goals of racial equality and civil debate. If you don't get that, you're either not very bright or...well, not very bright pretty much covers it.”

“I didn't see your comment before I posted mine, but you said it better than I did! I didn't realize there was a book, but I was very familiar with the monkey story. As I said, this reminds me of the "lipstick on a pig" comment being called a smear on Palin, when it was no such thing.
Yes, it's tempting to grab anything that looks like ammo and use it as such, but ultimately doing that only discredits your own position.”

“No, we should not ignore racism, but crying wolf by reading racism into a pre-existing, non-racial anecdote only weakens our position (are you aware this story is traditionally told by preachers from the pulpit, to teach that we must accept that we don't have control over everything that happens in life, good or bad?).
Calling it racist is no better than feigned GOP outrage over the supposedly sexist "lipstick on a pig" comment. There are PLENTY of actual racial attacks on Obama to condemn; let's focus on them. Comparing Democrats to disruptive monkeys is not racist.”

“It's called context. Yes the statement in and of itself is not racist, but when put in the context of who he was talking to, the audience response, and previous GOP statements about Obama and his family being monkeys or gorrillas this statement BECOMES racist. The concept of context is not that complex and is something you should have learned in high school.”

Update: Meg Whitman Does Not Heart Van Jones
Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 08:05:14 in Politics
“Jones signed a petition to have 9/11 investigated, as did many responsible and concerned Americans. We all should have had questions about our govt's failure to protect us on that day, and many important questions have still not been answered, nor has anyone in power been held accountable for the failure.
Show me any evidence that Jones believes 9/11 was an "inside job," or that the planes were holograms, or a bomb hit the Pentagon, or Jews were tipped off to stay home, etc etc, and I will agree he is a 9/11 conspiracy nut.
But using the word "truther" as an indictment, as if demanding full disclosure and accountability is a BAD thing, is a sad indication that fear and willful ignorance are winning strategies on today's political battleground.”

Sea Wife was a movie in the 1950s. The synopsis from IMDB: a cargo ship jammed with British evacuees from Singapore is sunk by a Japanese sub. A small lifeboat carries a beautiful woman, an army officer, a bigoted administrator, and a black seaman.

“No one was ever burned at the stake in Salem. Fourteen women and six men were executed, none because of threatening "the male masculinity" or for being "sexually aggressive ." Don't make things up.”

“Follow up: Women *TODAY* face similar and sometimes worse fates, simply for being women. Women in Kenya and Ethiopia are condemned to death as witches by self appointed male witch doctors. They face "female circumcision" as well. Women in the middle east face "honor" killings when they disgrace their families by acting in promiscuous or socially unacceptable, usually sexually overt manners.
So, really, things haven't changed THAT much for women in 400 years”

“Whether they were "burned at the stake" or otherwise put to death the reality is that those deaths had MORE to do with patriarchy and sexuality than most are willing to admit to.
In point of fact, while none of the people involved WERE witches most of the women involved WERE put to death because of accusations that they "practiced witchcraft" and "tempted" the men making the accusations sexually.”

“While your numbers are accurate, you give no alternative motive to my contention, widely held by scholars, that many of those women who were deemed witches were doneso because they refused to keep their "lustful" desires to themself. Colonial puritanical belief, as was the law of the land in the 1600's, was very deeply rooted in the repression of women, and the dominance of men, on a purely sexual basis. In fact, ALL religions possess a strong tendency toward sexual oppression of women, and a condemnation, even condemnati on-to-deat h of anyone who strayed from the socially accepted morays of the time”

The superior tone of this fantasy is revisionary; it pretends eating meat (and eggs and milk) is some modern day abomination which wiser, moral humans would naturally reject. If Obama is so smart, why does he seem to be addicted to hamburgers?”

“We are fortunate to have an anthropologist among us, who can tell us about the diet of Homo habilis. Actually, though, other anthropologists aren’t even sure habilis WAS our ancestor, let alone whether some or all of his number ate meat. We DO know he was prey rather than predator and, if he ate meat, it was opportunistically. Even a chimpanzee is highly evolved enough to override his instincts; some tribes eat meat, others don’t. We do know, by tooth striations (and INAA [I’m Not An Anthropologist]) that our earlier ancestor Lucy WAS a vegan, and that our jaw structure is that of an herbivore, not an omnivore. As for Obama? Alas, he is from Chicago where they live almost entirely on Polish sausages and laugh in the face of death.”

Don't assume "looking forward" means forgetting about these war crimes; it can mean looking forward to the prosecution of Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, etc. We should be demanding Obama appoint a legal task force to build the case against them for trial, not release lurid photos to gape at.
To release these photos now is to say to the world, "Look what the US has done," as if we the people knew about it and approved of it. We did NOT. Releasing the photos as evidence against the criminal Bush admin, during the course of a trial, would say to the world, "Look what these monsters did in the name of the US." That is the proper context to view these photos in.”

"Just as there is no "right" to have relations with a child or an animal." If you actually don't realize how monumentally FALSE this analogy is, I pity you. Children and animals by their natures cannot consent to sexual relations with adult humans; any sex with them is rape and abuse. Homosexual adults who consent to relations with others are no different from heterosexual adults who do the same, and retain the same rights.
"The only federally protected "right" is relationships between men and women." You don't think even a single argument to support this proclamation is necessary? Just because you say so is enough? Who died and made you dictator?
