“Well, if...as you say...we play lawyer-ese with the words until black becomes white....well, there wouldn't be any problem, would there? A black Obama would be a white Obama. And that's the root of this whole ridiculous "issue". He's black, and 23% of the nation can't handle that. And they never will. Way back when, there was a movement to relocate black slaves to Africe or Central America. Maybe instead we should relocate this 23% of the population to some lly-white country, where they can feel unthreatened.”

“Or maybe schools can cut into all the time wasted on the sports racket every high school has. Oh, no! Why would we ever expect children to study academic topics or practical topics, such as balancing a checkbook or learning how to cook, when it's so, so much more important for the goals of the nation to pay for winnowing down the annual graduating class of seniors into "top" athletic competitors, whose numbers can be furthered winnowed down through college into the few hundred who become professional athletes each year?”

“I was going to say something about the sports gambet but didn't want everybody on the thread to think I'm a.) unAmerican b.) a spoilsport (pun intended) or c.) an old fuddy-duddy. I'm all for sandlot baseball and touch football and basketball, etc. But when a school spends more on uniforms for the squad then they do on the arts or sciences, I get pi*sed.”

The Future of Democrats in Texas

Commented Jul 07, 2009 at 21:37:15 in Politics

“But only if there is a choice on the ballot labeled None of the Above. In this countryt we have one political party with two right wings. If voters were offered a real choice, with real candidates, not puppets chosen by corporate fascists, more people would be happy to vote. But what's the sense in voting, when there is no real choice?”

dsws replied on Jul 08, 2009 at 00:37:28

“If you get ballot access for a None of the Above Party in every state, I'll get my name changed to None of the Above and run on a platform of doing nothing except what is constitutionally required (deliver the State of the Union address, and not much else).”

tiredofthesameoldstuff replied on Jul 07, 2009 at 22:33:33

“The sense is not having another Shrub be elected president. Sorry the lesser of two evils is always the real choice.”

Green-Zanto replied on Jul 07, 2009 at 22:15:44

“There is a choice. You can choose to vote for Nader, or the Green party, or the Libertarian, or whoever you want. The problem is that the media doesn't cover them and the two parties deliberately keep them out of debates and make it difficult for them to make it on the ballot. You still have the choice though.”

“Re: preventing the Bush era tax cuts for the rich from expiring: To get Republican support, why not give each one of them a gift-wrapped bag of sand shoveled up in Iraq? If money needs to be raised to pay for health care that actually works for everyone, the place to go looking for the money is the rich, who have money; not the poor, who do not have money. The fact that the American public cannot realize this simple fact is just amazing.”

Are Speculators to Blame for Soaring Oil Prices?

Commented May 28, 2009 at 20:18:23 in Business

“I remember last year, when the price of oil was $147 per barrel, the price of regular gasolene at the pump was $4 per gallon. That was all laid off to the "forces of supply and demand", and we were all assured that speculation played no role at all in that pricing set up. Now, oil trades at around $60 per barrel. Well, if we do a little arithmetic, oil at $60 per barrel would yield gasolene at about $1.64 per gallon. That's not the current price, is it? It's $2.29 per gallon. To what would you attribute the difference of about 65 cents per gallon - or approximately a 40% OVERCHARGE? To those elusive "market forces"? HA! Yeah, sure.”

vippy replied on May 29, 2009 at 07:48:46

“Excellent point.”

TxAggie replied on May 28, 2009 at 23:36:37

“The state and federal tax is fixed, assuming you are in California, that tax is 67 cents per gallon. subtracting out the tax and assuiming your numbers at $147 the price of gasoline was $3.33 which is 2.3% of the cost of a barrel, at $60 oil the price of gasoline is $1.62 or 2.7%. There are other fixed costs in refining, transporting and marketing that remain constant, in addition I suspect the summer gasoline blends have something to do with it. Your reference to $147 oil is misleading- that price was a short term price spike caused by the hurricanes in the Gulf when the entire GOM was shut in.”

The Upside of the Minority Population Growth

Commented May 16, 2009 at 22:54:05 in Politics

“Unfortunately, the people whose opinions really count, the rich, do NOT care about American jobs. There's a Latin saying, non olet (or pecunia non olet), meaning money doesn't smell. The rich don't care where their money comes from; money doesn't need to have a particular "American" smell for them.”

“When John Stuart Mill said "The purpose of government is to serve the people..!" (and I take this quote from you), the key phrase is "the people". You and I think "the people" refers to us, the little people. But the rich know that they, and they alone, are "the people". The rest of us mean nothing. To rephrase Mill,...or to bring out the true sense of his phrase...the purpose of the government is to serve the rich. The rich institute governments to protect their property from the rest of us, the little people.”
