“If we prosecuted narcissism, we could probably prosecute the entire congress.

And, they were only trespassing if they used a fake invitation or ID to get in. If all they did was show up and effectively say, "Please let us in," and the Secret Service let them in, they broke no laws.”

IJKMNO replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 01:38:16

“They gained access to a secured area by under willfully false pretenses. That's trespassing. You could look it up. They fact that they were artful enough liars to fool the Secret Service is no defense.”

There's no law against being tasteless fools.”

“the people with the guns in areas around Obama's events were never in the presence of his person or along his motorcade route (the Secret Service would shoot anyone with a weapon showing along his motorcade or in his presence). They were outside the venue, exercising their right, with permits, to carry a weapon. I don't like it any more than you do, but it wasn't against the law.

The crashers themselves are probably in the clear, as long as all they did was show up and ask to be let in. If they forged an invitation or ID's, that would be another matter.”

in a way, we owe these idiots a favor. they exposed stunning incompetence in the protection of the president.

the downside, of course, is that if it was difficult for the public to get a glimpse of the president a week ago, it's probably going to be impossible now.”

“I could do without the SHOUTING, but you are 100% correct.

Every time the President appears anywhere, there are dozens of doors and hallways to be controlled or closed down. Dozens of agents are responsible for securing all possible routes of access to his person. It would only take one to ignore his/her job or, worse yet, go bad, to allow the wrong people near him.

That's why this is so scary.

Every time the President steps out of his vehicle, there are multiple sight lines that need to be cleared for a mile or more around him before the door opens and he is allowed to step out. It would only take one agent on one of those sight lines to fail to do his/her job, or worse, for the unthinkable to happen.

This is serious stuff.

The Head of the Secret Service and the Head of Homeland Security should be fired immediately, if it has not already been done. There has to be accountability for this and the buck stops at the highest levels.”

“We also have a foreign Head of State on US Soil. India - the country where a year ago there was a terrorist attack.

The Secret Service not only exposed OUR President - but this could have been an International disaster. I'm sure every Head of State who visits the US from this day forward will no longer have that sense of safety.

The Secret Service not only lost some of our respect - but I think they lost some International prestige as well.”

“That's beyond naive.

The protection of the President establishes a set of protocols and processes that must be followed for access to the person of the President, venue by venue; nobody past that door, nobody over that line, nobody without a scannable invitation and government issued photo ID, nobody without this pin, etc.

No agent can decide on his/her own that someone "looks OK" and so doesn't present any danger to the President.

I have no idea what the presence of a crew that looks like it's from Bravo has to do with anything, unless you're suggesting that renting a camera and hiring a couple of actors who look like a crew with fake ID's is an enabling event.”

Just think about it. Every time Obama sets foot outside the WH, his vehicle or a totally secured room, he is a sitting duck for Al Qaeda and right wing extremists who know how to use a high power rifle a mile away from the target.

this is really, really bad.”

“Three thoughts:

1) Hard to see how they'll be prosecuted if they didn't present a fake invitation; they'll just claim, "we showed up and they let us in; not our fault if they weren't supposed to let us in."

2) Memo to Al Qaeda: First thing Monday morning, recruit a few attractive blonds and a couple of pudgy, pasty-faced white guys.

3) The head of the Secret Service and the head of Homeland Security should be fired immediately, if not sooner.

4) My favorite part was when the Secret Service originally tried to claim there was no risk because they'd gone through a metal detector; well, duh, it was a dinner and there were knives on the tables, plus, a pocketful of anthrax or other poison doesn't set off the alarm if someone is willing to die using it.

5) If i were Michelle Obama, I'd be throwing a fit that makes the fit Nancy Reagan threw after the assassination attempt on her husband sound like a whisper.”

“OK. I think Mrs. Obama looked great in Naeem Khan's dress. I also don't begrudge it to her, as she puts up with a lot (like Secret Service "protection" that allowed two uninvited guests into the House where she, her husband and children are supposed to be "safe").

BUT, I do think if a Republican President's spouse (at a time of economic distress when the shipping of jobs overseas, and especially to India, is a bit of, ahem, an "issue") wore a dress made over three weeks by 40 relatively lowly paid workers in a workshop in India, I think many of us on HP would be just the teensiest, tiniest, littlest bit critical. Don't you?”

“The old saying "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones," seems to apply to us US critics of Dubai. Our public debt is growing in an unsustainable fashion, but is being almost completely ignored by the media.

We, too, may be throwing ourselves on the mercy of global creditors one day a decade or so from now. And, since a lot of those creditors are and will be in the Gulf and Middle East, we should probably be a little reserved in our criticisms of Dubai; what we say today may come back to haunt us.”

One, we actually should be grateful to these two for exposing stunning weaknesses in the President's security. Thank God it was a couple of publicity-hound idiots whose home is in foreclosure and whose cars have been repossessed and not people who wished the President harm.

Two, they won't do a day of prison time for this. Their Defense will be simple: we walked up to the event, didn't present a fake invitation, never even said we were invited, just asked if we could come in and they let us in.

Three, the takeaway for Al Qaeda et al is also simple: recruit some attractive blonds and a few pasty-faced, pudgy white guys first thing in the morning.”

Then again, it's northerners who make cornbread with sugar, not southerners.

and sweet potatoes--good ones--are plenty sweet without the "candied" part that so many people like---with the brown sugar-egg mixture they pour over 'em. Some people use marshmallows which I think REALLY ruins 'em. But other folks swear by 'em. Guess it all depends on how your mother makes 'em.

My mom's dressing is a straightforward bread dressing, savory and sagey--perfect every time. With the giblet gravy poured over it. Actually she makes two pots of gravy--one with, one without.”

Home Prices "Not Even Close" To Bottom: Barry Ritholtz (VIDEO)

Commented Nov 25, 2009 at 18:42:57 in Business

“If you accept the rule of thumb that the median home price in the US should be around 3x HH median income, and if median HH income is now just around $50,000, then the median Home price should be around $150,000. I believe the actual median price is now $175,000 or so. That suggest that prices across the board have another 15% or so to decline. I actually think that the 3x is high and that the right relationship is closer to 2.5x, which would put the right median price at $125,000, or 28% below where we are now.

I don't know which is right, but the answer is "a lot lower."”

kdp59 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 22:21:42

“I beelive you are corrct...I remember a chart I saw a few months back that showed the inflation adjusted MEDIAN price of a home in the US since the 1920's.

it was always between $125,000- $150,000.

until basically the late 1990- 2000 era.

for housing to be corrected properly it has to get there again. Good news is we are most of the way there already and the biggest drops left are oin the McMansion type homes and in very OVER-PRICED areas.

here's a chart that comes close but only goes back to like the 1970's

“I'll take your word on the facts, but what is your conclusion?

Did he or did he not rape a minor?

Should he or should he not have to return to the US to face the charges?

If your answer to the first question is "Yes" (which it has to be on the facts) and your answer to the second is "No," then what is the difference between letting Polanski get away without facing the final judgment of the US courts and letting a Catholic Priest get away with the same? Note that I'm not prejudging what the court should find, just asking whether he should be allowed to avoid facing its final judgment.”

LLeGrande replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 14:23:25

“The act which he admitted to is basically 'statutory rape'. A 13-year-old can NOT give consent to sexual activity under the law. That's way it's called 'statutory rape'. The sissy prosecutor called it something else. And, never dealt with were the matters of Mr. Polanski sodomizing the girl. And, drugging her with alcohol and Qualudes (which are known to lessen sexual inhibitions).

These are very serious charges which get most people (not the elites of society, though) very long prison sentences (decades, sometimes life).

That's what Mr. Polanski did. He admitted it. He has said he likes 'young girls', and doesn't understand what all the hoopla is about.”

“I can understand people's interest in a State Dinner. But why is this a front page story for HP? Shouldn't it be on a Style or Entertainment page?

The only "news" is that a lavish, celebrity-studded, over-the-top affair was hosted by the President and First Lady during very bad economic times. Personally, I don't feel any need to beat them up over that, as every president does this sort of thing. But why are people making such a big deal about it?

Nothing of substance in terms of America's relationship with India is discussed anywhere. I would agree that India is an important economic and security ally, but there is no new ground here.

Why is the news of who was there and what they wore and how the table looked and what food was served the subject of an HP front page story and why do those things interest people? I don't get it.

It was a State Dinner. It was nice. Good food and wine was served to a lot of rich and powerful people, of the type who typically get invited to State Dinners. Nothing different here from either of the two Bush's or Clinton or Reagan or Carter or...”

Hank10303 replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 11:50:15

“Just four things you seem to overlook that are very important to human beings, especially those in positions of power.

First, the pomp is necessary to demonstrate the wealth of a people by the wealth of its leader. It has been so through out time. The important telling thing about the example of wealth is how is it projected. It can be gaudy, brash or ostentatious among hundreds of other things. This affair was different, modern and presented with the theme of honoring the guest; not the host (as during all of the Bush state dinners). The presentation and images received in India will further endure those people to our leader; making political points for us.

Second, the quality of the content of the program, the food chosen and the guest list. Our CIA, FBI and other agencies are aware of "people" the India contingent liked and would want to "rub elbows with". More points.

Third, the enjoyment of the event as a special one that impressed the guests. The people clearly were enjoying themselves and were not just being politically correct.

Fourth, as a New Yorker I understand most deals are made over breaking bread.

When you add it all up those things play into the confidence, trust and ability of the negotiator; one of our President's necessary and vital skills. Just because the media doesn't know what was said of consquence doesn't mean nothing was.”
