“Only by taking in the IG, hospital by hospital, with the threat of prison time, can this VA bunch change. Military policies and procedures apply poorly to medical problems and sick people. 2 million undiagnosed soldiers need care - most have no outward signs, only symptoms - most docs are poorly prepared for this challenge. Many will die or be discarded by society, as in the past, unless different measures are tried.”

“The VA lacks adequate primary care staff to run their system - with several million new and mostly undiagnosed veterans trying to get in the system. With the ACA overwhelming the public/private primary care docs whose numbers in the country are also inadequate, veterans may not get the timely care we think would be appropriate. Your idea might work if veterans were allowed to self - refer to cardiopulmonary and mental health specialists who were directed by licensing boards to allocate part of their time to veterans for the next several years. Emergency Departments might function as triage points but that would require much training at several levels.”

“It was probably as good a package as could be passed given repub filibuster in the Senate and retro dems like Baucus who were bought and paid for by insurance kleptocrats and the big drug execs. The ACA is a timid first step which needs to be followed by further insurance reform and reform of our crummy health delivery components (not yet a system.) Medical Schools are still training the wrong kinds of docs and have not even started recruiting the primary care manpower which will be needed to improve health and lower cost.”

“Thanks to the ACA my family really has real health insurance - not the past pseudo-coverage which you could lose in many ways. Flaws exist in the ACA - deductibles are too high for care of chronic disease which will end up costing more to treat in the long run, the big pharma and klepto insurance execs are taking billions out of the system while providing little value - but what are the chances the repubs will try to help fix these problems or anything else ailing the country? The dems should say they would have pushed for more enlightened health insurance reform over repub objections and then would have absolutely voted for the ACA. They should add they will work for improvement in the ACA if voters send enough Reps. to congress who are not brain dead.”

juna on May 26, 2014 at 09:54:16

“I'd venture a guess that many of the faults you mention are due to Republican obstructionism preventing the ACA from delivering all the benefits originally intended. And you make an excellent point which, in sum, points to the complete lack of concern for the actual people of this country that the Republicans have so clearly displayed in the last few years. I hope the Dems can find some really good branding and advertising for the next campaigns that will clearly make these facts evident to the voting public.”

“Cornucopia is a good website to keep up with the green eye-shade MBA types in the food industry - especially dairy. There are at least 10 bad chemicals added for color or texture being used by dairy companies - many are not labeled and these jerks/criminals are trying various things around the country. A few years ago the Eastern MO steers were fed the returned cake mixes from Mary-Lee Gilster - the beef was awful but the steers got fat so fast the farmers considered it a success - luckily the guy mixing the cake mix into the feed died before killing too many of the unsuspecting public.”

Call the dairies and demand to know where that fat is coming from. Bread in the midwest is all contaminated by something prolonging shelf life.”

“Hahah I know right? My daughter came by the other day and said, "So you were right about the butter all along!" Growing up with oleo, I knew that stuff should never have been listed as a food item!

I always said use real butter but just use a little because a satisfied palate means you will eat less.

I honestly think that junk food not only has more calories but leaves you craving real food and that is why people eat more, they are trying to satisfy that craving.

I know that I have been on trips where I had to eat at restaurants for several days in a row and I would feel like I was dying for a plate full of vegetables. No matter how much I ate, I would not feel full, like I still needed to eat something until I got home and got real meat and vegetables.”

“Single payer is obviously on your mind and has nothing to do with the VA problems. The UK NHS has its weaknesses and strengths but is not where the US will end up. The VA has centers which perform very well, in other VA's there are some good departments and then some centers only take care of regulations, policies and procedures and need a clean out. The military administration model applies poorly to health care. The failing VA hospitals I have information about cover up lack of service with proof of strict adherence to policies.. The recruitment and training of our medical manpower has been off course for 50 years - we need primary care docs who are more than just referralists and nurses who really want to care for patients, not insurance schemes or other non-nursing jobs. The worst case I saw from these wars was a friend with florid PTSD, he was non-functional but had fallen for the discharge trick of signing "nothing was wrong" to get home faster. The VA assigned him to monthly group therapy, 100 miles away and nothing else and he died. The Vietnam era vets with PTSD were not treated and became a homeless underclass. I hope we can start doing better with the survivors of the Bush/Obama wars.”

“This kind of Fast Food joint has many problems - the worst being the oil in their fryer vats and how that oil is used. (too long and too hot and what is done with this "restaurant quality" oil when it is discarded.) Consumers poisoned slowly is apparently acceptable. Paid sick leave, medical benefits and a living wage would make it more likely the sick employee would stay away from work and seek appropriate care - which is very hard for poor people to access in Springfield, MO. I have seen a patient who was obviously jaundiced fired for missing her salad making job. The Health Dept. response seemed very good but this won't be the last of this kind of situation.”

“Sanctions are the equivalent of acts of war. Usually the poor bear the brunt of the harms and they are not effective. Obama's sanctions so far have focused on the rich which is a new and possibly better twist. However, Iran, Russia, China and India may be pushed into forming a trading block and guess whose currency won't be used as much. We may find out the real damage of QE when the dollar has less demand.”

jdl51 on May 11, 2014 at 02:52:29

“Sanctions are not the equivalent to an act of war. An act of war ends up with people being killed. Saying we'll curtail your business activities in our country is not anywhere close to being an act of war. Trade war maybe, but that's a figure of speech. India and China will never be in the same trading block. China is one of Pakistan's closest allies. Trade is increasing between the two and the border situation is under control, but there is a lot of suspicion and distrust of China.

"In Delhi, being anti-China is politically popular and financially profitable. A Lowy Institute Poll released in May 2013 found just 31 percent of Indians surveyed felt China’s rise had been good for India while 65 percent felt India should “join other countries to limit China’s influence.” Some 73 percent of Indians surveyed thought war with China was a “big threat” and 70 percent thought China’s aim was “to dominate Asia.””

“If food was labeled, the regulators were competent, and those MBA types did not cut every corner, perhaps what you say would have some validity. As it stands now, Americans are mostly being poisoned by agriculture, processors, grocers and restaurants (then they get more risk from the medical treatments offered to "cure" their maladies.) This movie, by Couric's interview on the Daily show, is leading people down a rabbit hole of sweets and carbs when industrial fats, and plastics are the underlying culprits since Reagan's oval office decisions in 1985. 80,000 chemicals unleashed on the public probably doesn't help either.”
