“Bill Maher is practicing selective science, unfortunately. How can he explain the eradication of smallpox and polio? He can't. He has a wide audience and should know better than to discourage vaccinations.. I agree with him that our food and our various environments and our lifestyles are the things that make us such a sick nation, but you can't argue with vaccines that have saved so many lives. Who gets diptheria these days? What about tetanus? The benefits of mass vaccination to the human race, particularly children, has been huge. Usually he's pretty smart, but on this one he's way off.”

“Does Donald Trump pay so little for appearing on his Miss Universe shows that he can only get the likes of Perez Hilton as a judge (!) and this person as entertainment, or has the man just completely lost his mind? I turned the program on, heard this was the entertainment, watched the introductions (with the sound off - I strongly dislike the loud, Euro-techno beat this program has used the past few years - totally dated, totally tacky ) to see the costumes, then turned it off. I've watched the Miss World, then Miss Universe programs for about forty years, but the Donald has managed to make it unwatchable for me.”

“Law suits such as this are intended to force physicians to take more care with their patients. Nothing improper was done by Mr. Ritter's family. I don't know about this case, but in many states, potential cases go before a medical review board before you can get into court. Under that system, if there hadn't been some unanswered questions that might have led to a finding of wrongful death, the case wouldn't have gotten into court. Ms. Yasbeck was simply asking for what the law allows in the case of wrongful death. The trial also brought out details that Ms. Yasbeck probably didn't know until then and perhaps what she learned will help her be able to move on with her healing and give her a way to deal with explaining what happened to her young daughter. Just as people feel a need for justice when their loved one dies at the hands of a thug, they also feel the need to fight for justice when the loved one dies under questionable circumstances. I can't imagine anyone not trying to right such a wrong for a family member if they believed that was the case.

Allensf, I would guess that if you were unfortunate enough to die a wrongful death, your family would be requesting an amount representing your lost future earnings, as the law provides. And I'm sure that amount would seem outrageous to many people.”

Obama Camp's Memo on Clintons' Politicizing Race

Commented Jan 13, 2008 at 08:42:27 in Politics

“Please consider what these accusations of racism toward both candidates is doing to the Democratic party. I don't believe that it's coincedence that Dick Morris wrote that Senator Clinton would stoop to using racism in her campaign. His prediction made its way to many mailing lists which is where I became aware of it. This was before there had been any actual allegations. Remember that Mr. Morris worked for the Clintons, but left under a cloud when it was discovered that he was secretly allowing a prostitute he was seeing to listen in on phone calls with the President. Morris is said to have declared in 1992, not long before leaving the White House, that he'd work for Repubs only in the future. He's since dedicated himself to destroying Senator C. He's also been prosecuted for tax evasion so I imagine he's in need of extra income. I ask everyone to consider the possibility that this seed has been planted to weaken the Dems and promote the cross-over of voters regardless of which Dem is nominated if this preceived rift is allowed to foment. Often we don't know the true identity of those posting on the board. We must not allow them to wedge us apart or we will have four more years of Repub rule. Thanks for your consideration.”

“I avoid buying any product that ruins the flow of the show I'm watching. Such placement makes me feel as if I'm in a nice warm bubble bath when someone throws a bucket of ice water in my face. And the advertisers assume I won't notice! Memoirs of a Gisha lost a viewer when they threw an ad in the middle of Medium. I quit watching The Apprentice because it became one annoying infomercial. I'll quit Vegas soon if they keep up the internal ads. The've pushed, among other things, motels, musical groups, and electronics. Last Friday a product was shown in the show about 30 seconds before the regular ad for the same product. Until I quit watching, I'll continue to avoid all products that throw cold water on my viewing enjoyment.”

“A spur-of-the moment rally for Dennis Kucinich in Albuquerque drew around 600 enthusiastic people. One local television channel mentioned he was in town - the other two failed to do even that. It's frustrating that he's usually ignored or misrepresented by the media. It matters to me because his positions are worthy of serious consideration. And, as he said during the last debate, his initial position on most issues has been proven to be correct. He's an honest, intelligent man who seems to be in public service to actually serve the public. Wish HuffPo showed a bit more respect.”

Phone Home Kucinich: UFO Lobby Wants Hillary/Richardson Ticket

Commented Nov 01, 2007 at 08:59:04 in Politics

“The Kucinich rally I attended had about 600 enthusiastic people present, yet was mentioned on only one local tv news program. I was very impressed with his sincerity and easy manner. He handled every question well, even when the question was intended to be provocative. It's clear that he understands the needs of the people and how government could help ease those needs. He also understands the benefit to the country of instituting his policies. One man said he has a son in Iraq, and that Dennis is the candidate to vote for if you care about our troops. Another man was from Ohio, and he thanked Dennis for standing up against the big business take-over attempt of the local utilities. His integrity and vision cost Dennis his position as mayor at the time, but he's since been proven right on the issue and is appreciated for it. I love that he's impatient with the usual political stance of having to make improvements in baby steps. And, to my knowledge, he's the only one of our candidates who's had to live in a car as a kid. If you haven't read his positions, I recommend checking out his web site.

The next evening I went to see Elizabeth Kucinich speak. That event received no local tv coverage. E. was intelligent, exceptionally knowledgable - especially about the global economy, warm, funny and pragmatic. My 86 year old mother went with me to hear Elizabeth speak. After the speech Mom went up to talk with E., who then proceeded to walk and talk with Mom all the way to the parking lot. Needless to say, after reading about Kucinich's programs and meeting E., he has my Mom's vote. Mine too. Mom wears her Kucinich button every day so people will ask her about him. She and I urge everyone who isn't passionate about another candidate to vote for Dennis. If the numbers are high enough it may make the Democratic nominee reconsider his/her positions.

Dennis Kucinich's an honest man. How refreshing it would be to have such a President.”

Infants Who Watch Baby Einstein Show Disappointing Results

Commented Aug 08, 2007 at 06:21:48 in Living

“Parenting requires accepting one's responsibility and using common sense (which should steer one away from baby-targeted videos!). I agree that there's benefit to considering advise, whether it comes from family, from books, or from observing others who seem to be doing a good job. On the ease of breast-feeding, however, we disagree. It's perfectly designed to be a natural process not requiring instruction. Of course there are women who have difficulties with the process but they are the exception, not the norm. My instinct is that so few mothers nurse their kids because they don't feel a need to live up to their responsibilities and they put their convenience ahead of their children's health. I'm sure work would be cited as a reason, but that's not a valid excuse. Absent a physical problem, it simply comes down to a choice to not commit to spending the time required. And we come full-circle to the reason for purchasing these silly videos!”

sonofsamstone replied on Aug 08, 2007 at 09:55:59

“As far as nursing goes, I have to rely on my wife's knowledge. I've always been of the opinion that women who say they "just can't, for some reason, produce milk" are using that as an excuse. I maintained that since we're mammals and have adapted to nurse our young....these women were full of it and using a convenient excuse. In short...I was crassly blaming the lazy American mother.
My wife, having nursed 3 kids, knows quite a bit about it. She told me that nursing is painful and unproductive if the baby doesn't latch correctly. There is, in fact, a whole profession of lactation consultant (yes, MORE consultants!) that can coach women how it's done. It's rarely a physical abnormality, most often it's a technique problem. That's one reason that multi-generational families are important. They pass down knowledge, and perhaps most importantly, help perpetuate the family genes.”

“Glad to see so many here giving Greg Palast the recognition he deserves. Without him, none of this information would be known. And props to Randi Rhodes for urging him to put it right in front of the noses of Congress. It's a lesson for all of us that just because something is so well known that it would be impossible to miss unless you lived under a rock, we can't assume Congress is aware of it. It seems they know nothing until it's reported by MSM.

I became aware of Greg's reporting through Democracy Now in the run-up to the war. I was so impressed that everything he reported was meticulously cited. Many of the things he wrote seemed unlikely at the time, but they always checked out.

There's an HBO movie about the voting machines in Ohio which, when coupled with the info on vote caging, has me convinced that the results in Ohio were totally fixed. Sorry I can't remember the name of the film.”

Top GOP Candidates Denounce Right Wing Harpy

Commented Mar 05, 2007 at 07:07:30 in Politics

“Equally disgusting to me as the vile comment was the laughter with which the audience rewarded it. The Republican candidates can denounce specific negative incidents which find their way into the media. That doesn't change the fact that Coulter has long represented what the Republican party considers to be wit and wisdom. None of those candidates will be considered for my vote until the address the systemic rot that has over-taken the Republican party.”

Brokeback Writer: Crash Is “Trash”… Industry Voters “Out Of Touch”…

Commented Mar 15, 2006 at 08:27:10 in Entertainment

“A writer expressed her opinion. None of us have to read it if we're not interested. At first I was totally perplexed by the vitriolic comments about Annie P.'s article. Why read the article, comment on it, and raise your blood-pressure if you're not interested in the topic? Then I had the horrible realization that those posts are from homophobic people using this opportunity to make more hateful comments. After reading those posts, I can better understand the frustration of the author, and the group who took out the ad regarding the film's loss, with the level of homophobia being expressed. Why are you so frightened of letting other people live their lives? I honestly don't understand how some of you can say such awful things about people simply because they are different than you - not worse, not better - just different.

This is a liberal site, but based on the crude language being used and the level of hatred being expressed it's clear that many who aren't liberal come here to write. Thanks to those of you who did post the kinds of thoughtful comments that I anticipate finding here.”

GOP Congressman Pleads Guilty To Conspiracy, Taking $2.4M In Bribes...

“The flabby, blubbering Congressman drew only disdain from me with his crocodile tears. He has treated people badly in his terms as a Congressman. He is a public servant who should be held to a higher standard since he is controlling the people's money. He choose, instead, to use his position to be a thief. He thereby both broke the law and the duty he owed his constituants. I hope he receives the full jail term and has to make total financial restitution. That should include the salary he has been drawing under false pretenses. He lied and lied until fatally cornered. Sorry, remorse at that point doesn't count. Shame on you Mr. Congressman!”

Republican Leadership Plays Politics With Iraq War Vote...

Commented Nov 19, 2005 at 06:55:05 in Home

“I believe one-half of the house and one-half of the senate should be deployed to the green zone to do their work. After six months they can rotate out and the other half will go over for six months. This rotating pattern should continue until the US is out of Iraq.
Their living conditions should be no better than those of the servicepeople's and no worse than Katrina victim's temporary tent housing.
They should receive no extra pay for this because they won't have many expenses while they're there, and they will be confined to safe zones, needing no hazardous duty pay - and they can stop the nonsense whenever they get tired of it and want to come home.

I'd like to see some variation on that be a requirement of approving a war. I think we'd have more serious debates and less arrogant dismissal of important information presented by people like Amy Goodman and Bill Moyers. Simply taking that step will have prevented several Deomcrates from looking gullible and totally incompetent with their current cries o/f not having reliable intell. The also choose to believe a president who had already proven that he lied like he breathes. Once a man is a proven liar, asking him anything is futile. If you then say you believed the president, you sound foolish and lazy.

Please shape up, Congress! I want to see adults working together to get this war ended, to get the next part of the report put together, to follow-up on your promise to get some alternative talk shows on Armed Services Radio. I'm quite steamed having just learned that my tax dollars send Rush Limbaugh and Dr. Laura to out troops. Then to quickly turn to the medical issue in this country and pass a single payer universal health care plan. This is why jobs are going over-seas, why families are going bankrupted, and it is adding to the ever encroching National Fear that appears it will be the legecy of this administration.

As I was watching the above discussion on C-Span, it occurred to me how many Republicans were quoting the reactions of service people to Congressman Mutha's presentation, and that the service people who were pleading their cases probably got their news, their facts, and their opinion from Rush Limbaugh. That makes me sick. Let's keep the pressure on to get alternative radio over there, as they were told to do last year.”

McCain: "There Is An Undeniable Sense That Things Are Slipping In Iraq"...

Commented Nov 11, 2005 at 15:24:34 in Home

“Thank you, Veterans, for your service to this country. I hope citizens will use this day to review the way our very wealthy country is failing to meet the needs of so many of our service people, to learn the facts, and to let our Congress know we expect some positive changes.

Cdnnewsjunky, your sentiments would have meant so much to my grandfather and to Daddy. You touched my heart.

In recogition of his service, Senator John McCain deserves respect. I applaud his efforts on behalf of veterans and on election reform. However, I would never vote for him, even if he changed his positions so they more closely reflected mine, because he chose to remain in the party that savagely attacked his family and smeared the legitimate service of Max Cleland and John Kerry. He seems to have succumbed to the same fallacy as Colin Powell - that he is more valuable staying in his public position than standing on principle. There is much about both of those men that I admire, but that alone is not enough to draw my vote.”

"Sure, Anderson Cooper Is Cute And Young, But Get A Grip, CNN"...

Commented Oct 13, 2005 at 06:53:18 in Home

“I grew up listening to Walter Winchell, Edward R. Murrow, Eric Severide and Walter Cronkite. Anderson Cooper is the first male newscaster since "Uncle Walter" to hold my attention. I also like Christine Amanpour and Amy Goodman.

To me, Mr. Cooper appears thoughtful, funny, compassionate and intelligent. He also has demonstrated courage. He doesn't exude any of the pomposity that makes it impossible for me to watch Aaron Brown, Ted Koppel, Charlie Rose, and the recently departed big three.

I'm excited about watching Mr. Cooper develop into a seasoned reporter over the next several years. Any show he's on, I'll watch. I do especially enjoy when he's doing field reporting (but waiting for hurricanes, not so much)!

I hope he gets the best venue for developing his talents because we desperately need a cadre of new journalists who aren't too afraid, or too cool, to ask the tough questions. Sorry Mr. Columnist, but "cute and young" have nothing to do with why I watch Anderson Cooper.”
