Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

Commented Sep 21, 2013 at 20:59:19 in College

“I find it sad, this idea that one generation is superior to the other, but must agree that there are many entitled people in my generation.

There is this general consensus that, if you don't follow the same path as everyone else (Go to college) you are generally unfulfilled, or you are stupid.

I find myself extremely fulfilled, being in the military and all, but it is very discouraging when people in my generation call me a monster, or tell me that I was "Just to stupid to go to college" and was "Not worth anything to anyone else" I am fulfilled, and you are jealous.

A lot of young men I know are in trades, and are told the same thing. YOU DO NOT need to tear down people simply because they find happiness in what you find to be menial work. They are fulfilled, and you are jealous.

A ton of people I know make average incomes, support their families, but are told that they need to do more, that others are "better" than they are. Money doesn't mean everything to everyone. They love their lives, and you are jealous.

Stop being jealous.”

“Lots of people like that here in Europe too. They got sold a degree in ecology, or sociology, or archaeology, or French & Italian, etc.

They leave university and complain that there are no opportunities in their field, but they're sniffy about trade work and would never consider retraining as a plumber. Sometimes they go back to university, and come out with a post-graduate degree for an over subscribed industry, like media and marketing, where there are 2000 applicants for an interim part-time jobshare.

As for me, I fast forwarded university, did a bit of temp work, then went into a professional services path but at the lowest level doing really dull functions. Sometimes I worked for free. But now that I'm established, I have to atone for the sins of others by paying monster taxes.

So I did what the older posters here keep saying everyone should be doing, and I would've done what you have done if that hadn't worked out for me.

But I swam upstream all the way, **none** of my peers did what I did.

And I'm alienated. I have no shared experiences with the university crowd, I was doing a crappy 9-5 that wasn't very cool; and now I'm a top tier tax payer, and that same crowd have turned bitter and jealous, and say it is right that I should pay those taxes, because I am privileged, and they were not.”

“So now, as americans, we have the right to impose our religious beliefs on a minority because we don't agree with their lifestyle? Good to know Next thing we need to attack is masturbation, since that is a sin as well.”
