“Bravo! Bravo!

Good work CBC. Many, many members of the African American and Hispanic communities have been frustrated and irritated by the Administration's response to the burgeoning unemployment crisis in and beyond the inner city. Every time the subject of targeted assistance to high risk populations who have been hit especially hard by the economic crisis, the unemployment crisis, the foreclosure crisis and disparities in health care has been broached with either Gibbs or President Obama they have avoided addressing the issue directly by using general statements such as the best we can do for those communities is to increase employment opportunities for everyone.

Some of us believe that Mr. Obama has been effectively muzzled on the issue of racial inequities that continue to persist despite his election. He is not able to craft any urban policies aimed at ameliorating the effects of Wall Street greed on inner cities or low and moderate income minority communities because he and his handlers have been cowered by the racist rhetoric on the Right.”

“Barney Frank also disagrees. He does not believe that everyone who is opposed to gay marriage is a bigot or a homophobe. And everyone who supports a woman's right to choose doesn't automatically support gay marriage.

"What a 'homophobe' means is someone who has prejudice about gay people," Frank tells told WBZ radio. Scalia's court opinions "makes it very clear that he's angry, frankly, about the existence of gay people."

But: "While I support same-sex marriage, I don't think if you're against it you're homophobic. I don't think Clarence Thomas is homophobic."

“Kucinich voted against the Bill because he believed it doesn't go far enough to reform health care. I agree with him. There's a difference between not voting for the Bill because it doesn't go far enough to achieve health care reform and not voting for the Bill because you support the insurance industry and you don't want any Bill to pass.”

Rascell Williams: Man Charged With Videotaping Cat Torture

Commented Nov 05, 2009 at 14:33:40 in New York

“Agreed, thrdr. Factory farms are horrendously cruel. My point, however, is that an unexpressed, yet inherent component of this story is the complex set of emotions experienced by the owner of the tortured cat.

This story is not about vegans or meat eaters.

It's about a woman whose trust was betrayed, who was terrorised by the torture of her pet and who probably became fearful for her own safety.

The person to whom I was responding seemed to miss the point of the story which was that a woman's pet had been tortured by a person she trusted with its well being.”

thrdr replied on Nov 06, 2009 at 00:47:42

“True. The story isn't about vegans or meat-eaters. I think the point was that we tolerate enormous cruelty at a distance and only respond with indignation when it strikes us up-close and personal . . . but that doesn't lessen it in the instance here does it? No, it doesn't. And it is pretty frightening. (And so are some people's comments on this story, I have to add.)

We humans are paradoxical beasts. Ever read Mark Helprin's "A Dove of the East"? It's in his short story collection of the same name. At one point the protagonist contemplates how, under one set of circumstances he can love a beautiful and harmless animal like a dove with the utmost kindness and gentleness, but in another he would kill it and eat it without hesitating. I can't do it justice here. It's a beautiful story anyway.

Maybe I'm just being maudlin but I can't help but think, though I'm not a believer, that if God existed and was say, a cow or a horse or a dog or a cat or a sheep . . . well we're really in trouble, aren't we?”

NY 23 Election Results: Bill Owens Beats Doug Hoffman

Commented Nov 04, 2009 at 00:53:08 in New York

“Agreed.

But, I would have been happier if Hoffman had won. We really don't need a ConservaDem in Congress to block the Democratic agenda.

And Palin and the Tea Baggers will be an albatross around any politician's neck thus forcing him or her into a losing election bid while forcing the moderate Republican out of the race.

On the other hand, Democrats shoud worry on two counts. First, the Democratic, Progressive and Liberal base of the Party is not energized or happy with the performance of Congress and the W.H. And, the economy is affecting moderate and low income voters to a substantial degree.”

“The original poster's statement is very broadly and badly intended; the problem with the statement is that most children who are cruel to animals DO NOT grow up into serial killers, even if many serious killers do show a pattern of cruelty to animals in childhood. Also, the person reported on here is an adult, not a child. Worse things are done regularly by college students in frat hazings. That doesn't make it a good thing, but it hardly deserves capital punishment.”

“Those who mistakenly believe that that it is impossible for emotionally intelligent people to both love household and outdoor pets while simultaneously including meat in their diets fail to comprehend the complexity of human thought and emotion. One wonders why, in the poorly informed thought life of some - not all vegans, there is something akin to an affective disorder whenever an event or situation calls for understanding the feelings and distress of someone other than themselves.”

“The Likud charter:

* The 1999 Likud charter emphasized the right of settlement in "Judea (and) Samaria" (more commonly known as the "West Bank") and Gaza," and as such, brings it into direct conflict with Palestinian claims on the same territory. Similarly, their claims of the Jordan river as the permanent eastern border to Israel and Jerusalem as "the eternal, united capital of the State of Israel and only of Israel," do the same.

* The 'Peace & Security' chapter of the 1999 Likud Party platform “flatly rejects the establishment of a Palestinian Arab state west of the Jordan river.” The chapter continued: “The Palestinians can run their lives freely in the framework of self-rule, but not as an independent and sovereign state.”

With Likud back in power, starting in 2009, Israeli foreign policy is still under review. Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, in his "National Security" platform, neither endorsed nor ruled out the idea of a Palestinian state. "Netanyahu has hinted that he does not oppose the creation of a Palestinian state, but aides say he must move cautiously because his religious-nationalist coalition partners refuse to give away land."

“Straight from the horse's mouth:

"There is no question that the United States are our staunchest friends AND THAT ISRAEL'S FIRM STANCE on its positions PAYS OFF" Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told public radio on Sunday in a satisfied tone echoed by other officials.

http://www.alarabiya.net/articles/2009/11/01/89863.html

And how to regular Israelis who desperately want peace view this latest development?

America, stop sucking up to Israel

"Before no other country on the planet does the United States kneel and plead like this. In other trouble spots, America takes a different tone. It bombs in Afghanistan, invades Iraq and threatens sanctions against Iran and North Korea. Did anyone in Washington consider begging Saddam Hussein to withdraw from occupied territory in Kuwait?

But Israel the occupier, the stubborn contrarian that continues to mock America and the world by building settlements and abusing the Palestinians, receives different treatment...

Illegal acts like the occupation and settlement expansion, and offensives that may have involved war crimes, as in Gaza, deserve a different approach. If America and the world had issued condemnations after Operation Summer Rains in 2006 - which left 400 Palestinians dead and severe infrastructure damage in the first major operation in Gaza since the disengagement - then Operation Cast Lead never would have been launched. “Sorry if this appears more than once. Don't blame me, blame the mods.
All very true. But this is nothing new. Israeli settlement expansion has been going on for decades now and America has been very supportive of Israel in the whole land-grabbing affair.
Israel's opposition to the Goldstone report is based on the fact that it contains nothing that the Israeli propaganda machine can spin that will restore their reputation. And the more Israel fights this report the more it appears to be the victimizer rather than the victim. Israel's tactics and heavy handedness in both the Lebanon War of 2006 and Gaza 2008-09 war against civilian populations begs the question, who are the real terrorists? If all sides are practicing terroristic tactics does one side become the "good guy" because they put on uniforms?
State-sponsored terrorism aided by high tech weaponry and nationalist zeal is just as destructive and immoral as the terrorism of low-tech small militant groups who fight against oppression”
