'A Single Man' Draws From Tom Ford's Relationship, Family Suicide

Commented Dec 09, 2009 at 18:14:02 in Entertainment

“I know of Tom Ford but I don't know much about Tom Ford. Maybe I'll lose my Gay Card over it. Who can say.
I did see 'A Single Man' at a screening last week and thought it was near brilliant. For a feature debut, it is brilliant. Everything: the script, the actors, the sets, the wardrobe, the hair & make-up... brilliant. I found this so much more satisfying than 'Brokeback Mountain,' which I have expressed lack of enthusiasm for since it opened.
I don't want to say much, because I think people need to see this with fresh eyes, but, in my personal opinion I didn't see the character of Kelly as bi-curious. I'm interested in seeing how others see him.
He's hungry and he's focused. And Nicholas Hoult looks smashing in a soft pink angora sweater.
I'm hoping everyone sees film. Despite the solemn tone, it's quite beautiful and, in a way, life affirming.
Mr Ford? (I know you'll be reading my comment because you are a gay man who cares what people think...) Thank you for this film. I'll see it a couple of times in the theater and definitely but it on DVD.”

Terrific line by the way by Beth. "It was the first time she learned the value of impressing a group of desperate, horny, old men -- a skill that would later catapult her to the top of the Republican Party." I think that is actually why she's around to not write (and she didn't write) a book for us to not read.”

“I don't really care who gets what. The new releases sound amazing and a new generation are being exposed to the Beatles. Be it through the recordings or a video game.

And... It was Paul McCartney who suggested to Jackson, who was asking about investment possibilities, the idea of buying music catalogs. Jackson promptly bought up the Beatles. S*it happens.”

Leslie Van Houten: A Friendship, Part 4 of 5

Commented Aug 06, 2009 at 16:40:35 in Entertainment

“You're right. The crimes committed in Vietnam and Iraq are far worse. And the people who committed those crimes are considered heroes.
The people who sent people off to kill in those countries are just as insane and commanding as Manson. Their followers were just doing what they were told.

I, for one, hope that Leslie Van Houten gets out soon. She's served her time. She seems incredibly sincere. I think she'd be fine and contribute to society.

I just hope none of the people posting here are ever in a similar situation. I hope none of your kids ever get caught up in something so horrible.
I will happen to someone sometime because that's just the way it sometimes is.”

Perez Hilton Betrays Dustin Lance Black

Commented Jun 18, 2009 at 01:54:14 in Entertainment

“What does Hilton gain?
Well... you and I and the others who keep commenting are keeping his name going.
What he gains is attention. That is all a tabloid reporter wants and it would appear that he's quite good at it.
As soon as people stop reporting on such things (like Mr Alvear) and people like yours and myself stop reading and commenting on these things, maybe it'll stop. But our ongoing comments just fuel the fire.
And it wasn't Black's partner (well, his sex partner). It was his boyfriend. There's a huge difference.
I'm all for sex pics. I have no problem reading and looking at this stuff. If I took naked pics and they ended up on-line I'd only have myself to blame.
BTW: I'm NOT a fan of Hilton. I am a fan of squalid celeb behavior!!”

Perez Hilton Betrays Dustin Lance Black

Commented Jun 17, 2009 at 19:32:25 in Entertainment

“One of the big issues with the unprotected sex is that A) he was with a guy he was dating, not a long term partner with whom unprotected sex had been discussed and agreed upon which leads into B) he goes around speaking about the importance of practicing safe sex.
I'm not saying he's a hypocrite, but I will say he's not the Saint of the Homos some are trying to say he is. Yes, it was a nice Oscar speech. That really has nothing to do with anything.
The actions of Hilton? He was doing his job. Black did not sign a release. It would seen that the ex boyfriend put the pics out for sale. If the pics did not exist in the first place there would be no controversy.
Let play a game: You and your husband are in love and decide to take some sexy pics in the heat of the moment. But wait. This is before you got married and this is just a boyfriend. What? You wouldn't do that? And why not? Think about it.”

crazychef replied on Jun 17, 2009 at 21:42:18

“Unprotected sex is dangerous and in addition to preaching abstinence to my kids I've also preached (and bought for them) protection, Protection, PROTECTION!!!!

No one but Mr. Black and his partner know if the relationship was casual or just short of renting tuxes and finding a minister (I'm Canadian, gay marriage has been legal for a while.). Everyone seems to have an opinion on a subject that is none of their business!

The real issue is privacy. What did "Hilton" gain by publishing the pictures? He did not have to post pictures that were obviously private. Even the source of the photos is suspect. Mr. Black's ex has apparently denied releasing them. Private pictures are just that. Private. "Hilton" is becoming the famewh*re he takes delight in mocking. Just because one is a public figure, a "celebrity" so to speak, doesn't mean they're not entitled to privacy. Posed pictures at public events, such as awards shows and the like are part of the "job". Anything else is a gross invasion of privacy. I'm sick to death of hearing of "freedom of the press". That phrase has become a joke. It's being used to justify "stalker-azzi" behaviour of the media. These pictures were not newsworthy.
Just like pictures of me and my husband would be newsworthy.

As far as taking sexy pictures? It never occurred to us. Let's just say that while pictures may be worth a thousand words we're having to much fun making each other speechless!”

Perez Hilton Betrays Dustin Lance Black

Commented Jun 17, 2009 at 15:34:57 in Entertainment

“Well... if by "premeditated" you mean that Hilton tricked Black into having unprotected sex with him and while doing the nasty took photos to one day screw him over, sure, it was premeditated.
At first I thought your article was going to be a humor piece... a week after the hoopla had dominated the tabloids... but I get the impression that you're serious.
I also get the impression that it may have been premeditated of you to wait a week and then, when the dust had settled, drag the story back out. Maybe so Dustin might see it and think, "Oh... I want to be Mike's boyfriend!!"
Mary... you're a week late an nobody cares.”

Steamboater replied on Jun 18, 2009 at 01:27:57

“When were these pics taken? As Black is an advocate for safe sex, we need to know when and also maybe the guy who Black was with is HIV neg and Black asked prior to having sex with him or dating him if he was. I always ask. Sure some people might lie and if I'm serious about someone I ask to see documentation and the first thing I look at is the date on the lab work document. I also wear a condom no matter what.

Although some might think Black is hot, he's not my type, too blond and not rugged loooking enough for me however I can see where some guys might find him very hot. His intelligence is very sexy and although I haven't looked at the pics and won't, he probably has a great body too, long and lean and hard.

Bottom line. Black gave us so=mething that Operez can only dream of and probably jealous of. Black gave an heroic life on film that will live forever and that kind of contribution far outweighs any lasting impression Perez will leave.”

MistressD replied on Jun 17, 2009 at 16:59:20

The Internet Kills Another of My Favorite Spots

Commented Jun 17, 2009 at 10:06:41 in Business

“In SF they re-set all prices back to full price. For the first few weeks the marked CD/DVDs down 20%. After that it went to 30% for another few weeks. Unless it was a better price than Amazon I couldn't be bothered. I'm an Amazon Prime customer which means, besides the standard no sales tax, I get free shipping.
When Tower liquidated their prices were amazing. They went from 20% to 90% in about six weeks.
Virgin also removed a lot of stock when the prices started to get good. I 'm guessing they had a buyer for their leftover stock I think hot ticket items like Criterion got pulled so they could be sold at a higher price. Can speak for how this worked in NY but we were watching the SF store like hawks!”

The Internet Kills Another of My Favorite Spots

Commented Jun 16, 2009 at 20:58:40 in Business

“I loved the music stores but it twas industry greed that killed the beast.
Freakin' $19 for a 40 min album? Back when CDs first came out we were all told that they price would only go down once the industry was up and running. All the price ever did do was go up.

Tower use to have New Release Tuesday, where you could pick up new albums for $9.99 or $11.99. IMO, still too high but better than full retail!
Virgin was never as good with bargains. Even their liquidation sale (in San Francisco) sucked.
The production cost never really went up over the years. The artist's cut was never greatly increased. It was all label greed.

I still buy the occasional CD but it's either used, from Amoeba or Streelight, or new from Amazon.”

LLNYRN replied on Jun 16, 2009 at 22:34:35

“The final days of the liquidation sale here in NYC was 80% off. And I really lucked out. Mostly DVDs, not music. Was able to get at least $300 worth of stuff for around $60. Missed out on Criterion Collection discs though.
I feel the problem other than record companies, is the publics' need for instant gratification. If folks wait a year of two, that particular CD that was MSRP could go down to (less than) half the price.
Unless it's an artist I really truly love, I normally wait.”

But Maher (who I adore) is right. Mr President, it's time to get to it. Don't Ask, Don't Tell was (unless I'm mistaken) the result of an Executive Order. The Amazing Race - Still the Best of its Genre: But the Itinerary's Not as Amazing as it Once Was

Commented May 11, 2009 at 09:57:00 in Entertainment

“I agree that the Race has become a less amazing. What I love is that, regardless of behavior, the eliminations are due to crossing the mat last, not because of bitchy backstabbing and a panel of 'judges.'

I disagree with EdinNJ: I think Margie has been protecting Luke far too long. Luke was all set to move on from The Incident but Margie was the one who kept bringing it up to him. I also think Margie is a good person and a great mother but again, I think she's too smothering and protective. She was usually the first to say, "I'll take this challenge." She needs to let her son fly on his own.

I think there's a stress to the race that's not made clear or spoken of. We watch the Race over two months. They do it in a couple of weeks. The don't eat or sleep well and are constantly on the go. It's rare that any team makes it the entire race without losing it. It can and has been done, but it's rare.
Then there's the editing. They edit it just like any show, to make it that much more exciting. So we, the viewers don't get the whole story.

And to Mr Russnow? Yeah you...
I watched the vid of your friend and only have one thing to say about that: I fully support lifting the passport rule to allow you two to race. Oh yeah. You'd be dubbed Team Pretty.”
