Add Jobs, Not Troops

Commented Nov 24, 2009 at 15:35:24 in Politics

“I started out being stunned that Obama sold his base out.

With the increase in troops, their cost, the quagmire, and no jobs, I'm angry.

I'll be supporting someone else for the Democratic nomination in 2012.”

“It's politics that got us into this mess. It's politics that will get us out. Death by no health care comes to us as a gift from the politicians. And we expect a leader like Bill Clinton to speak up for the small guys yet instead he slams takes aggressive & compassionate action.

I'm not certain I will ever forgive Bill Clinton for his short sighted behavior.”

“About time we had some guts in the Democratic Party.

Now will they just stand up to big Pharma and really reform health insurance?

That way we'd get removal of the antitrust exemptions for the insurance industry, negotiated drug prices, a medicare type public option for ALL Americans and a cap on the amount insurance companies can take as profits just like the cap on casinos. While they're at it, could they fix Medicare so all doctors and hospitals want Medicare patients?

BTW Throwing the bums out sounds better and better.

Also like the idea of Congress having to have the same kind of health insurance and health care they vote in for the rest of America.”

An Open Letter to President Obama About Afghanistan From William R. Polk

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 06:42:45 in World

“The impact of the huge economic cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the subsequent toll it takes on our quality of life and security, cannot be underestimated.

Osama Bin Laden stated years ago that he wanted to bankrupt our country just like the Afghan war bankrupted the Soviet Union. That's the front he works on and engaging us in a non-ending war certainly seems to accomplishing his goal.

Unless the broader economic perspective informs our strategy, we may get to a point of destruction of our economy that the damage will be permanent. I fear we may already be there.

Military leaders will always recommend more war to solve problems even when the result of war endangers other areas of our country's effective functioning.

You and others like you, who stand back and survey the situation from the broader perspective and impact are more suited to recommend comprehensive broad impact solutions, not the generals.

I believe the president will appreciate your analysis and I will fax your letter to the White House. I recommend others do the same.”

Game On

Commented Oct 27, 2009 at 08:47:58 in Politics

“Mike, I agree with you that the Progressives need to fight. But let's remember that the President and the Dems started out by compromising away Single Payer before the game even began.

Those Republicans are smart and took full advantage of our weak beginning. Once the negotiating began, we had to give up more because we were already compromised.

I say we keep the big guns out for all that we want until the very end.

We need to demand:

1. A public option for everyone including those with employer based insurance and those who can afford private insurance, not just those who are poor and uninsured

2. A plan that gives us the entire reform in 2010 so that 44,000 per year don't have to die and countless numbers go bankrupt while you dither

3. The ability to negotiate the price down for prescription drugs

4. Or better yet, a single payer plan for all

5. And what's this opt-out provision?!?”

Bardmess replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 12:08:19

“Single payer would've been nice, but...
do you really believe that this is a "free country" ?

Ask the Blue Dogs and their Republican dog whisperers why we have to fight so hard for what is so obviously right and needed. Unfortunately, our Constitution is not as great as the claims. We have this Senate and it's unequal representation. We have lobbies. We have campaign finance issues. We have elected Senators (especially) who owe their jobs to the health insurance industry, not to their constituents. Then we have Murdoch's propaganda machine, just in case the constituents wise up. People in other civilized nations pity us. We need to fight and hard, and not underestimate the forces lined up against anyone who might need medical attention someday.”

“Progressives forced our hand?

Yeah right.

That's like a kid demanding a cookie and you give them a doggie biscuit.

You still need to get us

5. And what's this opt-out provision?!?

You can take your doggie biscuit and shove it!”

comrade leviathan replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 10:52:03

“This is all true, but you seem to have a very shortsighted view of history. Single payer is what we should have, absolutely. But we are "progressively" moving closer and closer to that with every major health care bill that is passed.

Consider:

1. Social Security is signed in 1935, giving senior citizens a somewhat meaningful retirement fund.
2. Medicare is signed in 1965, providing comprehensive health insurance to anyone 65 and older.
3. Tricare is created by the DoD in 1994, giving veterans a British-style health system, funded entirely by the federal government.
And tentatively...
4. The Affordable Health Choices Act, signed in 2009, will give at least 10 million more Americans the option to choose a publicly-funded insurance option.

These milestones never get repealed, reversed, or watered down. Progress continues forward. It takes a long time, but ultimately the US will have a single payer system because it is the cheapest option, the simplest option to enact, and the best means for universal health care.”

socialtalker replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 10:22:00

“medicaid also has an opt out provision for each state. how many states have opt-ed out of medicaid, NONE.
so if the public option works, the states will keep it, or those that immediately opted-out will opt back in. if it doesnt work, then the states will stay out.”

Why Billionaires Should Pay for the Jobless Recovery

Commented Oct 26, 2009 at 07:09:24 in Business

“I'm with you.

First, Social Security taxes should be taken on all income.

Next we need to reduce the deductions the wealthy can take. Reward work.

Expose the favoritism. Few seem to know billionaires can pay little or no taxes because of loopholes. We need to expose that the Bush tax cuts gave tax cuts to the wealthy by above 6% whereas the lowest income earners only got about 1.5% reduction.”

IndelibleVoice replied on Oct 26, 2009 at 09:19:05

“The masses receive fewer breaks under conservative "tax cut" initiatives because common workers are the ones who mostly fund the military, public schools and social programs. The richest few could not maintain those government programs through taxation and continue to profit so greatly. Bush had to make it seem like there was something in his tax cut plan for everyone, but of course there really wasn't--and "trickle down" economics (as we've learned the hard way) doesn't count...”
