“Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were pushed into more progressive policy statements because of the progressive plans put forth by John Edwards. Once he was disgraced, they dropped those policies like a hot potato. I'm not sure if Edwards would have been able to have done better, but it is telling that he's been muted so dramatically. Was it a threat he posed to those in power? You can't convince me otherwise.”

“Agreed. My take on the whole political situation is that if someone is inclined to go into public service they're "inspected" while at the local level. If they cannot be enticed into some potentially blackmail-able situation (sex, fraud, theft etc.,) they're eliminated right there or, if elected, boxed in so they go nowhere further. Some noteable exceptions are Kucinich, Feingold, Sanders, Grayson and some others. It seems highly suspect that the percentage of federal government employees with sex related scandals is a random occurrence. It seems if they cross the line or don't vote the way a certain element with a major political organization that doesn't register as an agent of a foreign government wants them to, then the scandal erupts.”

Is anyone getting the feeling we are in a corporate dictatorship existing just to line the pockets of the extremely rich and powerful? Caste system anyone?!?”

“About time we had some guts in the Democratic Party.

Now will they just stand up to big Pharma and really reform health insurance?

That way we'd get removal of the antitrust exemptions for the insurance industry, negotiated drug prices, a medicare type public option for ALL Americans and a cap on the amount insurance companies can take as profits just like the cap on casinos. While they're at it, could they fix Medicare so all doctors and hospitals want Medicare patients?

BTW Throwing the bums out sounds better and better.

Also like the idea of Congress having to have the same kind of health insurance and health care they vote in for the rest of America.”

An Open Letter to President Obama About Afghanistan From William R. Polk

Commented Nov 11, 2009 at 06:42:45 in World

“The impact of the huge economic cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the subsequent toll it takes on our quality of life and security, cannot be underestimated.

Osama Bin Laden stated years ago that he wanted to bankrupt our country just like the Afghan war bankrupted the Soviet Union. That's the front he works on and engaging us in a non-ending war certainly seems to accomplishing his goal.

Unless the broader economic perspective informs our strategy, we may get to a point of destruction of our economy that the damage will be permanent. I fear we may already be there.

Military leaders will always recommend more war to solve problems even when the result of war endangers other areas of our country's effective functioning.

You and others like you, who stand back and survey the situation from the broader perspective and impact are more suited to recommend comprehensive broad impact solutions, not the generals.

I believe the president will appreciate your analysis and I will fax your letter to the White House. I recommend others do the same.”

Durbin: Progressives Forced Our Hand On Public Option

Commented Oct 27, 2009 at 08:36:22 in Politics

“Progressives forced our hand?

Yeah right.

That's like a kid demanding a cookie and you give them a doggie biscuit.

You still need to get us

1. A public option for everyone including those with employer based insurance and those who can afford private insurance, not just those who are poor and uninsured

2. A plan that gives us the entire reform in 2010 so that 44,000 per year don't have to die and countless numbers go bankrupt while you dither

3. The ability to negotiate the price down for prescription drugs

4. Or better yet, a single payer plan for all

5. And what's this opt-out provision?!?

You can take your doggie biscuit and shove it!”

comrade leviathan replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 10:52:03

“This is all true, but you seem to have a very shortsighted view of history. Single payer is what we should have, absolutely. But we are "progressively" moving closer and closer to that with every major health care bill that is passed.

Consider:

1. Social Security is signed in 1935, giving senior citizens a somewhat meaningful retirement fund.
2. Medicare is signed in 1965, providing comprehensive health insurance to anyone 65 and older.
3. Tricare is created by the DoD in 1994, giving veterans a British-style health system, funded entirely by the federal government.
And tentatively...
4. The Affordable Health Choices Act, signed in 2009, will give at least 10 million more Americans the option to choose a publicly-funded insurance option.

These milestones never get repealed, reversed, or watered down. Progress continues forward. It takes a long time, but ultimately the US will have a single payer system because it is the cheapest option, the simplest option to enact, and the best means for universal health care.”

socialtalker replied on Oct 27, 2009 at 10:22:00

“medicaid also has an opt out provision for each state. how many states have opt-ed out of medicaid, NONE.
so if the public option works, the states will keep it, or those that immediately opted-out will opt back in. if it doesnt work, then the states will stay out.”
