“I used to be a big enthusiast of apple products. but they way they treat their chinese workers at foxconn makes me frown in disgust. all they make is overpriced junk.”

Chris CA on Mar 14, 2012 at 14:13:44

“These "Apple" workers (actually, they are FoxConn, not Apple, employees) are treated better and paid more than workers in other factories and Apple actually has a commitment to bettering the labor situation.
Yet you are so "disgusted" how these people are treated?
So you purchase your electronics from other companies which do absolutely nothing (such as require mandatory inspections and minimum age/work conditions) for the workers (which are paid less than FoxConn)?”

RevSpaminator on Mar 12, 2012 at 21:27:07

“Junk? I'm not a fan, but I wouldn't call it junk. It works like it is supposed to, within Apple's limited view of how it should function.

I would say more along the lines of over priced status symbols.”

“Atheists do believe in something! They just don't believe in fairy tales or the need for a big invisible god to tell them what to do. Education, and an understanding of the difference between right and wrong gives them their moral compass. I don't know where you live, but there are jobs available, perhaps not exactly what people want, but they can get a person through, while they continue to look for what they want.”

Andy Osinski on Feb 9, 2012 at 21:32:20

“Sorry to hear about your job situation and I hope it improves soon.

Two suggestions.
First, try to improve your grammar and punctuation a bit, especially if you're writing a resume (unless you wrote this post after an all nigh session checking the employment section of every newspaper within 50 miles of home). If the all-nighter is the reason, ignore suggestion one.
Second, consider swallowing your pride a bit and look for a job that will give you some sort of practical experience in any field. if you're a business major, get something in retail to see how business really works. Journalism? Volunteer at some organization to help them write their newsletter. Electrical or computer engineer? Spend a few months at Radio Shack.

Don't expect to start at the top and work your way up. In this business climate, employers are apt to look at your experience, whatever it may be, as much as they are your grades.”

“joel,
there are jobs there, not the one that you wish for. but take one or two to get out of the hole,
i did it.
when i lost my 60k a year job... i took a job at a paint store making $9.00 per hour, the manager felt bad for me because i was willing to take it, he quickly saw the desire i had to work and move forward with the company, then i got a second job at a retail store making $10.50 per hour. I worked 80 hours a week not including driving time
3! years later the paint company offered me a sales position, i was able to quit my second job and now i can say that if you start from the bottom you will be better off”

“Hope you're able to start a side business. That's what my daughter and most of her friends are doing -- that, and working wherever they can while they take freelancing/ contract jobs to build their resumes. I'm sure this is where some of the job growth is coming from.”

It's hard work with a lot of risk because you depend on the weather every growing season. Farming may be the one industry left that can benefit from cooperative ventures. Everyone needs to eat.”

“ag work is disincentivized by the government. i agree we will need more, but ag workers get no employment law protections, no minimum wage and no SSI benefits. If ever there was a career field the govt worked tirelessly to destroy, its ag work. The only incentive that exists is to hire undocumented migrant workers, who have no qualms about having thier 5 yr old work along side of them (because they cant be in school)
instead of subsidizing corp farms, the only subsidizes that should exist are for the few 'family' farms that are left. require a minimum wage and deduct for SSI (so the worker can be assured a little more than abject poverty) AND the part that no on wants to hear is that we will all have to be willing to pay higher prices for food, and there wont be banannas and blueberrys available all year. And i dont mean inflated prices at the fancy grocer because it has fancier pakaging. whole foods isnt where its at (although i understand to a small degree they try and do right by thier employees)”
