“Calling it "Universe" is better than "god" because "god" refers to a being, but once you've done that, I don't believe the words are inter-changeable "in any context".
Also, why feel grateful to, pray to, or worship the Universe?”

Caru replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 16:06:07

“Since when does the word god simply refer to a being, there are thousands of definitions.”

“Actually, there's plenty of science that says "when people die, they stay dead". You are correct that there is exactly zero science that says "souls survive death".”

Inoku replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 18:25:37

“Right, because there's zero science to prove that souls exist in the first place, or, for that matter, what happens to human consciousness after death. That is in the realm of guesswork or faith.

I don't understand why a belief that brings comfort to so many people (like the afterlife or reincarnation) is so venomously attacked by atheists. So what if there's no science backing it up? Science can't prove or disprove it, it's tremendously helpful for people in dealing with issues of morality or grief or loss, and it doesn't really affect you if someone else believes in reincarnation.”

“The Wall St bonuses are the most confounding, to me. The rationalization of "we have to pay them or they will go to work elsewhere " just doesn't float. Where pray tell is elsewhere ? Dubai ? Assuming they have homes and families, this is not realistic. Normally, if you live off the gov't dole, it's called "welfare" and if you get gov't help in keeping a roof over your head it's called "Section 8". Perhaps that what all those East Side penthouses should be called. Frankly, I can't see the difference between Wall St. "welfare" recipients, and those who live in run down neighborhoods in my own community. The dole is still the dole, whether it's carried in a Gucci handbag, or one of brown paper.
How could this seemingly socially conscious candidate, turn into this confounded "un-decider" ?
Maybe he just doesn't understand the complexities of financial dealings, and assumes Tim Geithner does ? Lots of hip, cool, people are not math oriented, math being pretty un-cool in some circles.
If he is even considering trading on the lives of our military by sending more of them to Afghanistan, in return for 'breathing room.", there is no printable comment for that.
You are not the only one disappointed.”

“Does "who knows what else" include anything negative DK?”

Daniel Brooks replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 13:06:53

“"Who knows what else" is a humble recognition that there are probably ideals beyond my finite comprehension.

I think those conditions you may be refering to as "anything negative" (ignorance, intolerance, prejudice, fear, hatred, violence, war, destruction, etc.) are really a negation of something else, an absence of an actual ideal. The sad fact that those conditions have their own sublime urgency, but are common enough to be recognizable, to have their own names, is not enough to qualify them as ideals.

I realize, however, that an apparent paradoxes, such as the dance between creativity and destruction, for example, may be an expression of an ideal beyond my comprehension. I still believe it is a fundamental mistake to idealize those negatives. The darkness is not what you think, and to romanticize it is to suffer a wasted life that rarely corresponds to the ultimate reality.

What is DK?”

Democrats Now "All In" On Healthcare Reform

Commented Nov 23, 2009 at 20:01:19 in Politics

“I hate to "beat a dead horse", but...

The bills they've come up with are so dreadful that I don't think it matters if they pass one or not. They will piss off enough people either way. They should not be looking forward to election day 2010. They should have known that they didn't have the votes for real reform before they spent months on end stirring up opposition *and* raising expectations.

For-profit HC is the problem! How can it also be the solution? I can't figure out what the insurance companies are complaining about.

BTW - The Dems may be "all in", but Lieberman (I-Aetna) is not a Dem.”

“"Last week I really needed to ask the head of our kids' junior high school a question about the dance my daughter was attending. I forgot to send an email. But as my husband and I were sitting at a coffee shop across town from the school, in walks the woman who runs the junior high school. I asked her the question and we were done."

Did your new unimaginable intuition give you advance notice that this would happen? Do you really believe this god thing has the time and patience for minutiae like this?

"What is this stupid mini miracle challenge you ask? Go for the most mini miracles you can manifest in a week. I'm talking parking spaces, great seats on public transportation, a huge sale on your favorite retail item, having an easy day at home with the family without the kids fighting, stuff like that."

It's a lot like politics, John. When the good stuff happens, our side gets the credit. When things suck, it's the other side's fault.

It's a great system, really. That's why so many who are either political or religous use it habitually.”

That must be tough when Sarah Palin shows up.”

PenguinLinux replied on Nov 24, 2009 at 11:28:02

“Let me propose this concept.......

You've learned everything there is to learn.
You've owned everything there is to own.
You've done everything to do.

Now what?

Something to meditate on for sure, I think.

I also think that while I do not agree with Sarah Palin or those like her, she is here to learn - and to teach - just as we all are. Instead of resisting, look for the lessons you are to learn from others and to teach others. No, I don't mean lessons like "Now kids, let's not vote for X" or "Look at X and Y", I mean higher level lessons, lessons of the soul, lessons that transcend this realm... lessons for the soul, lessons for the I AM of who you really are.

It has been said that the things we dislike about others are really the things we dislike about ourselves. Do you dare go into the dark recesses of your own mind, your own soul, to seek out your shadow self?”

Arithrianos replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 10:20:52

“Palin is information that somwtihing is off kilter, something is missing or not working. Gratitude is not about getting what you want, it about what shows up. Take people who cannot feel physical pain, they could cut themselves and bleed to death before they even notice, because pain is information, and without that information there are problems. So what he is saying is don't worry about the qualities or desirablilty of what shows up, use it as information and it is all good, it is all worthy to be worked with, even Palin.”
