Why Do We Fear An Empty Mind?

Why Do We Fear An Empty Mind?

Commented May 15, 2011 at 21:29:00 in Healthy Living

“I don't think my post got in but this article is irritating. The absence of self I don't think is a good thing. The part about meditation having no thought I don't think is right either, meditation is a concentration of thought, you put your mind somewhere else, at least that's how I see it. " Being","Nothingness" does this writer follow Jean-Paul Sartre? I guess what bothers me is her idea about the absence of self, which I take as more harmful than good because with an absence of self there no awareness, you just float along. Maybe that's what she's aiming at.”

porcinechic on Jun 22, 2011 at 10:24:34

“Self is the mask we see when we look in the mirror. Is it such a bad thing to turn off the internal chatter that constantly distracts us from what truly is?

When I can still those distractions instead of mindlessly getting caught up in them, and when I can avoid my incessant emotional attachment to those distractions, I am much more aware.”

Arithrianos on May 16, 2011 at 07:45:15

“actually, emptyness (NOT nothingness, that is nihlism) is FULL, the extremes of existance and nonexistance have no application or traction at all when speaking of pure BEingness, it comes before all dualistic splits and is not absence of awareness at all, it is just being councioussness itself instead of concentrating on the contents of counciousness. it is represented by a crystal ball, all sorts of colors can appear, and yet the ball remains pure. mere appearance which slaves mistake for reality will never satisfy no matter how myuch is consumed, emptyness has the only real calories available, so the more emptyness is infused it is called beauty, truth is beauty. beauty is truth, but this beauty is nondual and so can be quite ugly. floating along is nihlism, and buddha said nihilist are so stupid thet problably cant be helped in this lifetime, may all being know the difference between emptiness and nothingness.”

Funny video though, Farrell seems to be game for anything.”

Compassion for Our Enemies: Necessity or Naïveté?

Commented May 12, 2011 at 20:13:27 in Healthy Living

“Not everyone in the Middle East hates the West, their leaders mostly do. They have to do with their leaders or these insurgents, terrorists groups want. It's like living near giant vacuum. Our foreign policies have not helped the US with the Middle East, quite the opposite in fact. It's starts back when the US helped Afghanistan fight Russia, then we just left them, insulted them basically by abandoning them and not helping rebuild Afghanistan. There's the cultural differences (capitalist West, the free spirit attitude, the arrogance, the money) their thoughts about us according to the media (the "backward" Middle East, full of crazy terrorists, the OIL, the poverty, the huge money gap). The misinformation on both issues in the Middle East and the West. The problem is the US really doesn't know who their enemy is on the ground (they don't wear a sign that says "terrorist") (or "innocent civilian") we can't always tell. The really sad part is that these groups are starting to use CHILD suicide bombers (yes it is true) So it's like Vietnam in a way (kids walking up to US soldier with a grenade in their hand and then it explodes) Changing policies in the Middle East might help, but it's always about GREED for power or money on both SIDES. You can't achieve in a place with leaders who do NOT want it, nor can you convince a people to care about people who they have been taught are their enemy.”

Compassion for Our Enemies: Necessity or Naïveté?

Commented May 12, 2011 at 20:01:20 in Healthy Living

“Well for a fundamentalist terrorist like OBL it would be naivete. I have no compassion for people who murder thousands of people{ in the name of ANYTHING}. However, I do understand how these people work, I took classes to learn about anti-terrorism because of what happened on 9/11. I was shocked, worried but most of all mad. I wanted to know WHY. So I went into criminology/law. I know the difference between a Muslim Fundamentalist and just a regular Muslim (who do not believe in violence, don't want to kill anyone) who just follow their faith. I've take plenty of classes on war, behavioral science, I understand how these specific criminals work (terrorists, a different breed of criminals) why, how. Ideologies like that in radical Islam do not just come out of nowhere, they are grown. There are always reasons people do things to other people whether these reasons are good or bad. Terrorists, they just don't randomly do things. They make a statement, they use propaganda to get followers, it's usually very violent, well planned out (9/11 took 9 years to plan think about that for a minute) These people who want to just kill Westerners, they indoctrinate their own children from the day they are born. They manipulate the youth to become suicide bombers (there are reasons for this has to do with their ideology) I don't feel compassion for them, I can understand why they do it though. You can't reason with absolutism.”

“I wish I could have gone to a private college...”

bolivare on May 11, 2011 at 08:11:58

“So expensive. I know, I work in one. Here it is about 20k a year. And that is just to get to your bachelors. If you go further, it is even more expensive. Yes, the education is the best money can buy, but not everyone can afford this...I know I can't. Another problem with private colleges is that the faculty and staff tend to be paid much more less than the public industry. We used to have the best benefits, but they have been slowly getting rid of those, so much so I"m putting out my resume as we have not had raises in 9 years and they are also cutting our staffing levels, which we have to absorb into our work load, plus cutting our benefits. I may not get the better benefits, but as I see it, I"m already losing more and more and they are already talking about cutting their contributions to our health care and our retirement 401ks to no contributions from them. If they were offsetting this by giving raises, I probably would stay...but that on top of no raises and a hiring freeze...I think not. But, the education is good. That is one thing I will give this college. Sadly, we are starting to lose the quality faculty because the public industry is paying much better.”
