“I was sitting hear watching the news(Maddow) and came up with a brilliant idea.If some of these cable shows want real ratings they should have a series of debates over the issues. Can you imagine Maddow vs Beck how about Olbermann vs O'reilly. Can you imagine the ratings for those debates.I would love to see Maddow take apart Beck. How can we set something like that up????”

“Michigan's economy has been in the tank because of congress which over the last 25 years has basically sold out the american people with their free trade policies and corruption. Now the rest of the country is getting a taste of what michigan has been going through.WELCOME TO OUR WORLD! Let the auto companies go under and you'll get a lot better idea of what Michigan has endured.”

“This is an auto workers generous pension. Twenty five hundred a month. When he gets to social security age they have what they call the carve out. If your social security is $1200.00 a month than your pension is cut to $1300.00.So you still get $2,500.00 a month.Figure 3% inflation for ten years and you lose 30% of your purchasing power. If you live to 20 years after you retire your losing 60% of your purchasing power. Unlike congress that has cost of living built into their pensions. So after 6-8 years of retirement they make more money than when they were working.”

So you tell me how we get to fair trade!”

If free trade is so good for american and one billion in exports equates to 22,000 jobs created.Seeing we're running a 800 billion deficit ( that sets a new record every year) dosen't that equate to a minus 14-16 million jobs lost.Mostly high paying union manufacturing jobs. Please someone answer that one question!!!!!!!!!”

“But what if the policies of the federal government make the business fail .Free trade and globalization has been an absolute disaster for the U.S. and especially for the so called middleclass the last 25 years. One hundred billion dollars of unfunded mandates for the auto companies what other busineses in the U.S. could stay competitive with those cost.NONE! Yet you people still want to blame the unions.”

bkbigfish replied on Dec 16, 2008 at 16:04:46

“I agree with your point about the federal government policies. But both parties have had a hand in the globalization that has taken place. And I am not "you people who want to blame the unions". Hell, if I was a union boss, I would try to get whatever I could for the workers, as long as the management was willing to pay it. Furthermore, leave the unions out of this completely for the moment. It is the job of the people running the company to be able to see five, ten, even more years down the road to ensure long-term financial viability. And in that, the executives clearly failed. They have known for years that they were losing market share, that their salaries and benefits (and executive compensation) were totally out of whack with what they would be able to pay and still make a profit. The execs should have told the unions, "look, we want to work with you.... but at this rate, our numbers are unsustainable." Again, it is not the Federal Gov's job to prop up poorly run companies, and in this case, I would say that GM falls squarely into that category.”

This would be a dream.
A 'Joe the Plumber" type with brains.
Even a Jesse Ventura with a few more brains.

But it doesn't seem likely.
I have read the list that Paterson was considering before the entrance of Kennedy into the fold.
None of them are inspiring figures.

We are going to have to choose between people who either are millionaires, or who can raise about $30,000,000. Them's the facts. Of the possibilities before us, I think Kennedy is the closest we can get to a true breath of fresh air.

Now if we can only get Ralph Nader to be taken seriously by the so-called progressive left that has done nothing but trash him, we might eventually have a chance to elect the kind of people we would like - people who run on their ideas. But until then, I'll take Kennedy over the alternatives without hesitation.”

No I don't think your a republican what i'm refering to are the 49 republican senators that are going to defeat this loan. And those same 49 senators that had no problem rubberstamping the 150 billion for Iraq year after year. What I do take offense to is your idea that somehow the auto industry is a flawed industry. All it has done is gave millions of americans living wages, healthcare and after WWII built the middleclass in this country to make american the strongest country in the world. So I do take exception to people trying to run down the big 3 and the UAW.”

They have been restructuring for the last 10 years and were getting ready to turn the corner. When the crooks and greed on wallstreet turn the economy upside down and froze the markets. So you think its okay for up to 3 million bluecollar jobs which probably equals up to 10 million average americans to be thrown out of the middleclass because of the coruption on wallstreet???????”

“Does anyone wonder why the transplants pay their workers within 3.00-3.50 the hour wage of the UAW.Its to keep the union from orginizing those plants. So you people that work in these plants you can thank the union for your wages. But you better hope the republicans don't succeed in breaking the union because if they do it won't be long before these foreign companies decide they need you to take a 50% pay cut!!!!!!”

jake106 replied on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:45:21

“Average pay in a non-UAW auto company is $46-47 dollars an hour. Average pay in a UAW auto company is $65 and hour. That would be a 20 dollar difference, not a 3-3.50 difference.

Of course, average figures are not a really good comparison in these cases, because we don't know if either case has a large proportion of extraordinarily high or low pay that is changing the stats.”

“Who the hell do you think those 2-3 million people are .There taxpayers too! So don't tell me about fleecing the tax payer. The republicans are great they had no trouble for six and a half throwing 12 million a month into the rat hole called Iraq. but can't come up with basically what amounts to one month in a Iraq to a company thats been building cars for 100 years. The republicans seem to forget that of those 800,000 retirees that they want to strip of their benifits 72,000 are veterans.”

SiberianRat replied on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:34:36

Also, why would you respond to my comment with some indication that because I don't support the current bailout scheme that I somehow I'm anti-veteran or something else. And you're right, Iraq has been an indescribable fleecing of the taxpayer (among other egregious wrongs), but what does that have to do with this?”

Than probaly add another 3 million indirect jobs grocery stores, retail stores resturants, coffee shops, city workers, state workers no tax base left.So I think the 3 million is really underestimated. You get the picture!!!!Not to mention what it will do to city and state pension and healthcare funds for its retirees”

servicepap replied on Dec 12, 2008 at 02:14:02

“Right, Jp2! It's way more than 3 million people who rely on the auto industry. Way, way more. Michigan will be totally devastated. Think ten million people whose livelihood will be ruined, and a good many who, in spite of savings and planning for catastrophe--will never be able to withstand what is going to happen. Small businesses of all types rely on the auto industry, and they will be doomed. Where will all these people find work, find medical insurance, find the means to keep their homes and businesses from going into foreclosure? This is a catastrophe in the making, and those who will suffer most are just everyday people, hard working family people. Maybe they own a flower shop. Or a restaurant. Or any number of businesses that will crash and burn when no one can afford to patronize them.

This is not just about the AUTO industry, nor the UAW This is about the entire population of a state. How many will be able to hold on? Where will all these people go when Michigan is a graveyard?”

If you worked in the Auto industry you would know better than to post such things. There are certain components that are imported from outside the NAFTA group and this is the case with all North American automotive companies.
The vast majority in dollars and parts are built by suppliers located within the NAFTA goup of countries. [U.S.,Mexico,Canada]
Don't take my word for it, ask the Production control department at your local assembly plant where the parts come from.”

torrrep replied on Dec 12, 2008 at 17:15:44

“They shut down one factory in the U.S. and that was in California. No auto manufacturer in their right mind should be operating in California. Those jobs went to Mexico and has been part of a plan that is at least 5 years old. I worked for Toyota 4 years ago when they began moving the production. So don't act like this is because of the economy because it is not. The other plant they own have temporarily stopped production but those workers are still being trained and paid. Production resumed last month so maybe you should try getting up to date on your reading.”
