“I doubt that tribal governments are working with drug lords. I am not saying that they should get their land taken away. I admit that I was sloppy in how I stated that. It's true that drug runners could be sneaking onto the land and growing marijuana, but it's also possible that property owners (including non-natives who own a plat on a reservation) could be allowing it. I am just explaining how Congress might decide to interpret the situation and what they might do. The tribal governments are going to have to figure out how they are going to crack down on the problem but if they fail to get a handle on the situation, that could be playing with fire.”

“The reservations that deal in marijuana could be playing with fire.

One law from Congress could overturn the rights of those reservations. They're only as valid as Congress says they are and that's the honest truth. Look at the history of treaties between the tribes and the U.S. They were almost always broken. The U.N. doesn't have the authority to enforce a treaty between a tribe and the U.S.

They could lose some of their sovereignty over this. Big mistake.”

“That would be:

teenage gang rape: 1
gang rapes committed by adults: infinity

The article said the median age of this show's viewers are 27.

I think our children are more poorly served by the fact that our "education" system assumes that they are morons, and tells them "Don't ever have sex, no matter what." If we elevated the level of the public discourse a little, it would be amazing the things we could achieve.

For an example of what I'm talking about, look at every other country in the "1st world" other than the US.”

“Some high school students can't even remember to turn in their homework. Do you think they really remember to wear protection? No.

This show shouldn't air. Even though statistics say that many high school students are sexually active, they also say that they are sexually irresponsible. A show geared to the teen audience shouldn't promote such risky behavior. It's not about being prude. It's about AIDS.”

daffey replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 07:21:00

“You're wrong. It isn't that they don't remember, it's that they don't want to. At the end of the day, the dirty big secret of condoms is that no man in his right mind would prefer to wear one. One wag once described wearing condoms as eating a sirloin steak with a mouth full of Novocain. And young people are in no way prepared, in the moments of intimacy, to harness that level of control and compromise of pleasure that many an adult is unable to muster. That's the fact. For all the attempts to paint abstinence ed as the problem, one need only look at the facts. Inner cities are ripe with HIV and unplanned pregnancies, and seldom are the ground zeros of abstinence only. Plus countries like England have been promoting condom use for going on two decades, and have some of the highest rates of HIV in the industrialized West. Truth be told, we've been flinging condoms at the problem as if they are the magical end-all for over twenty years. And after tens of millions of deaths and continued outbreaks, and millions more broken lives, we have yet to see the ‘fling condoms and all will be well’ strategy bear fruit.”

marxmarv replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 03:45:31

“Statistics in ab-only vs. comprehensive se.x ed students show that kids certainly do remember their condoms when condoms and the know-how to use them are easily available. It was the only class I paid attention to in HS, except for driver ed and computer programming.

To quote Peter Gibbons in Office Space, "It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care." Not having sores on your package is important. Homework, not so much.”

vorpalmusic replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 03:28:07

“Our culture tells teenagers "This is wrong" rather than explaining the intricacies of the situation, and not surprisingly, the kids ignore that message and anything coming from the same direction. If we elevate the level of discussion in sex education enough, the intelligent children will realize that this is an important issue and they will approach it more maturely.

If you want proof of this argument, look at virtually every other "1st world" country outside of Freedomland.”

Decode replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 02:38:27

“Actually, the majority of high school students DO remember condoms. Do you think all h.s. students these days slack off, are irresponsible, do not use protection, drink and smoke? NO. not all do. there's a lot of responsible kids.”

KimHW replied on Nov 05, 2009 at 02:18:41

“Anybody who has experience working with children can tell you that those notes look typical for a 6 year old. Children love to make cards and pictures, anyway. They can churn out a dozens notes a day if you give them free reign with markers and a stack of paper. The spelling, the limited finger dexterity one can see from the drawings, the choice of colors and materials, repetition of the familiar symbol of a hearts, lack of adequate punctuation and the content of the notes all indicate that someone on a kindergarten level produced the notes.”

“I've read a few blog entries on a story about this book saying that it was a hoax. Some people wondered how the notes could stay hidden. They ask, "Didn't the parents ever clean?" Well, from my understanding, once they left their house and moved into a hotel room for treatment, they were no longer at home where they could clean. Even if they were at home, most people who are going through something like a disease in the family don't really think about cleaning or cooking. All their energy is placed into getting their loved one to be well. The house could be falling down around them for all they care.

If your kid had cancer, would you really going to spend your time peeking under furniture? Or would you spend that time reading a bedtime story to your kid? I just thought some perspective was in order.”

“This is why people from outside of Northern California should not assume anything about the politicians here. Those of us who live in the San Francisco bay area (about 550 miles from LA for the truly uninformed) know that Gavin was never particularly popular to the locals.

He barely won when he first ran for mayor. Then he ticked off the Asian community with his handling of supervisor Ed Ju, after he lost the SF bid for the 2016 Olympics by not staying on top of the 49ners franchise's interest in leaving the city. He alienated the police by publicizing the private video some members of the squad produced making fun of locals. He can't get along with anybody on the board of supervisors and has a go it alone governing method (like Bush).

He made gay marriage a political issue in the 2004 presidential race by the way he handled it publicly. His affair with a staffer's wife and subsequent handling of that raised ethical questions. The guy has been a hot mess, but the rest of you guys just didn't know it.”

marco01 replied on Oct 31, 2009 at 03:25:15

“I can't see how anyone who is not a bigot could criticize Gavin's move to legitimize gay marriage in 2004. It was a courageous move. I was living in the Richmond at the time and came down to City Hall to see the celebration. It was wonderful.

The criticism just seems like sour grapes from hard core Gonzalez supporters who will search for some ulterior motive in everything Newsom does.”

queertodaydotcom replied on Oct 31, 2009 at 03:02:10

“I couldn't agree more. The illusion that Newsom is a progressive is totally wack. His campaigns are mostly funded by PG&E which is why he fought against opening up the electricity to competition. He's usually on the conservative side when it comes to immigration, homelessness, funding shelters, etc.”

His policies led to crime getting out of control in the city, from unfettered mob-style hits to rampant drug running, almost nightly shootings, teenage prostitution in Oakland's motels, regular school lock downs, the highest unemployment rate in the region, ridiculous nepotism in city government, corruption and neglected infrastructure. However, Jerry was great at getting empty luxury condos built in the city that the current residents can't afford.”

Then he prevented community groups from bidding on city property while focusing on a failed policy of gentrification in Oakland's downtown. Oakland has been a mess since Jerry with people dealing drugs every few blocks in East Oakland, a huge underage prostitution problem in the local hotels, the bay area's worst job market and the rise of a black crime family.”
