Bankruptcy Should Be An Option For Some Student Loans: Report

“Higher education is free in a number of countries. Why isn't it free in America?”

duzntmatr on Sep 4, 2013 at 00:13:31

“Lol. America can not get Healthcare for people. Higher Education is a privilege not a Taxpayers won't pay higher tax for K-12.”

Ratt on Aug 22, 2013 at 13:49:01

“There in lies the problem, ain't nothing FREE, Gov't and Countries don't make money they tax the sheayat out of the productive side of society. I worked three jobs and got my degree, ate roman noodles, hotdogs, had a 25 year old car and lived in a crappy trailer park. When you are poor and want an education you have to sacrifice. $100,000 dollar school loan to a preppy college to get an under-water basket weaving degree is simply, well, stupid.”

“Duh... It's pretty obvious it would be a bad investment for the financier but that is the risk they take and the bank should bear it. Students loans are classified as consumer loans... the same class as credit card debt. Bankruptcy should be restored to student loan borrowers.”

ABron on Aug 22, 2013 at 17:51:46

“"the bank should bear it?" Guess what? Banks will simply not offer those loans. Period. Because who would offer a large loan to an 18 yr old kid with no credit and no job and they can declare bankruptcy when they get out of school?? Answer; No one and certainly no bank would. lcr999 is correct.”

lcr999 on Aug 22, 2013 at 00:25:12

“Then that risk will be priced in and education loans will have rates more like credit cards., i.e. 14% or more. Rates for education loans are relatively low now because they can not be discharged.”

“That's dumb. Gun laws in Boston are not lax, they are very strict. See how that worked out? Making stricter gun laws only works on the law abiding. People who don't care about the gun law will get guns if they want to. For criminals it doesn't matter what the law says.”

Bavatar on May 3, 2013 at 06:27:31

“So then we should have no laws then because the people that break them do not respect them? Seems rational.”

If she's like this on this issue, think what she's like on, say, tax law, or complex budget questions involving bonds and interest rates and matching funds?”

“New Hampshire is part of the free state project. The MSM is biased and further propagating and spinning the events in Boston. If anything we need to ask where these CST are? The explosion in West Texas would have been a great place to hide any evidence and any operators that participated in the bombing in Boston could be destroyed. Ammonium nitrate doesn't explode by itself... it needs to be detonated with a detonator designed for it. The official story is full of holes. Keep asking questions people.”

wonderinoutloud on Apr 23, 2013 at 20:43:03

“Get your chemistry correct before you suggest conspiracy theories. The west Texas explosion was caused by anhydrous ammonia gas under pressure. Ammonium Nitrate is a solid which requires a detonator. Anhydrous ammonia under pressure has been used as an internal combustion fuel. The pressure unit holding the anhydrous ammonia failed, causing rapid expulsion of ammonia, and the ammonia to combine with oxygen, causing the explosion.”

bobk in nh on Apr 23, 2013 at 20:18:08

“1) Ammonium nitrate does not need a specific detonator
2) Blow up a plant to destroy Boston evidence? OMG how loo ny a proposition is that!!”

“At the Colorado Batman shooter's level of education, he was over his head in debt. With the prospect of failing out, he would be an indentured servant for life on a fixed income with no way of becoming self-sufficient. A living wage is not possible as the debt collectors garnish 25% his wages and confiscate all of his tax return.

You can't stop things like this with a ban on weapons because anything can be used as a weapon when you run amok. Even if guns were banned and the shooter could not get weapons.. he could use whatever else is available... he could have come in with a baseball bat and did the same thing. Running Amok is a known phenomenon and happens to the best of the best of humanity when put in mental situations such as insurmountable student loan debt without bankruptcy protection. You want to fix this.. return bankruptcy protection for borrowers of federal and private student loans.

We need to return bankruptcy protection to student loan borrowers. This is the only way to help people in this situation.”

RiverBoatQueen on Jul 21, 2012 at 13:53:44

“June, I don't think so. U of Riverside is a cheap school. He wasn't too terribly in debt. Maybe if he took a loan out, only about $10,000.00. That's nothing to lose sleep over.
I don't know what the Colorado University fees were, but still. I know kids who at the Bachelor's level are in debt to the tune of $200,000.00!
They think they're smart kids, but to graduate with horrendous, unforgiveable debt like that is very stupid!
I think there should be limits on student loans so that kids don't become indentured servants to their debts post-grad.
Anyhow - Holmes couldn't get a job with his neuroscience degree. So he thought why not get my PhD in neuroscience?
He dropped out when faced with the workload. He was simply burned out on school & needed meaningful work and social attachments, but most of all, he needed to feel competent and earn a paycheck, like his parents do.
Anyhow - - - he melted down into a delusional, sadistic mess.
He's never going to get out of prison for the rest of his life. He may be put to death by the death penalty.
One thing his crime will do is pump up support for the death penalty, like never before!
I've read many people comment that before all of this happened, they were against the death penalty, but now. In light of what Holmes did - they are the biggest supporters of the death penalty.”

Diana Howell on Jul 21, 2012 at 13:41:07

“It's possible that Holmes was loaded down with student debt, though you're the only person I've seen who has mentioned this. He was an in-state student in the excellent University of California system, so it's not like he was paying $45,000 in tuition every year for the Ivy League, plus fellowships are usually available for excellent science students who want to attend grad school. But still, you could be right.

What I don't agree with you on is that Holmes could have accomplished the same degree of carnage with a baseball bat. Really? You think he could have killed 12 people and wounded more than 50 others if all he had had was a baseball bat? I don't think so. For one thing, he would have had to run his victims down, one by one, in order to attack them. For another, people would probably not have been nearly so afraid to try to jump him if he hadn't had not just one gun, but multiple weapons.”

“Huh? Man, I'm not sure I follow, I mean "neither lender or borrower be?" If you borrow something from someone, (and I mean anything, not just money) You owe it to YOURSELF to be a real human being and not just a user and return it in better condition. Where are morals anymore? Sheesh.”

Daddy Joe on Jul 21, 2012 at 13:40:43

“Why,so people can rack up a mountain of debt just to file bankruptcy? The solution is to not borrow more than you can pay back.”

nancynancy on Jul 21, 2012 at 13:33:34

“The "baseball bat" theory is nonsense. If the suspect had had a baseball bat, he wouldn't have been able to kill 12 people and injure 38 others so easiy. The movie goers could have wrestled him to the ground fairly quickly.”

“How would a Libertarian handle student loans? Well you heard they want to audit the Fed and end the IRS. It is likely that if a Libertarian or Ron Paul were elected.. he would also audit the Dept. of Ed. If I were elected to Congress, I'd pass bills aimed at removing the guarantee out of guaranteed student loans and return the risk were it belongs.. to the lender. Defaulted student loans will no longer be a burden to the American taxpayer. Consequently, bankruptcy protection to student loan borrowers will be restored. That does mean that lenders will lend less but that also means that colleges will have to decrease thier tuition eventually making it easier for a waitress to go to college on tip money which by the way will become nontaxable.”

“Government Debt - There will be no default if the Debt Ceiling is not raised in August 2011.. Only the uninformed and fear mongers claim failure to increase the USA's debt ceiling by August 2011 will cause the USA to default on its obligations. The only reason a default could occur is if the Obama Administration ignores the law and intentionally tries to create a crisis,.
