9/11? Yes, 9/11.

Commented Dec 02, 2009 at 18:11:38 in Politics

“What occurred on 9/11/01 will never be clearly understood. The primary focus in Afghanistan was to capture Bin Laden and after eight futile years it will never happen! The Afghan people do not want us there and we have accomplished very little there.
World War II for us lasted about four years. How is it some stone age third world nation like Afghanistan can keep us engaged for eight years?? The answer is simple; IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY! Defense contractors are raking it in ( at our expense)
The tragedy is that Obama could have been a president long remembered for bringing our nation back to peace and prosperity. Instead he has sold out to the corporate monsters and provided us with very little to rejoice about! The Obamaites will continue to make excuses for his misdeeds but history will NOT absolve him! He has let us down with healthcare reform, ending the wars, bringing Bush to justice, Employee Free Choice Act, environmental legislation... and the list just goes on.Looks like a one term prez to me.”

“The answer is nowhere near that simple, but I'd say the two key factors are:

1) Bush took us on a fool's errand in Iraq, diverting attention and resources from where they were really needed;
2) The U.S. military does not fight asymmetrical wars--wars with guerilla forces--very well.

To your point: Pentagon contractors are powerful, but they don't have the magic ability to make voters' dead sons and daughters come back, or to make voters forget what they've lost. And members of Congress are already becoming nervous about this. As the Republicans learned in 2006 & 2008, no amount of money can buy your way back into the voters favor when you're seen as having failed them that badly.”

10 Reasons Why Democrats Who Opposed the Health Care Bill Made a Political Mistake

Commented Nov 13, 2009 at 18:07:50 in Politics

“I know why Dennis Kucinich chose to vote against the bill; the proposed legislation is crap! It mandates that everyone have it or face fines, yet is set up not to cover everyone!

This is not reform! It is another give away to the corporate monster! Democrats had better be prepared for the repercussions next election year!

Physicians For a National Health Program stated that no bill would have been better than the bill the gutless democrats have been in ectasy all week about!”

igorvitch replied on Nov 13, 2009 at 22:48:23

“Kucinich is a very good and moral man. He's also a head-in-the-clouds idealist that can't accomplish much at all because of an inability to compromise with even his own party members. I admire him for his sense of what's right. I don't think he's an effective legislator. He reminds me of Nader and his inflexibility that very well may have caused us two elections.”

What the Gay Boycott of the DNC Can Do

Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 15:55:12 in Politics

“As a straight Chicano activist I can say that it's not only the gays that the Democrats have taken for granted. The dems make a lot of promises to get into office. Once in they listen only to their corporate masters and subsequently nothing truly progressive gets passed.

I would invite gay people to seriously consider uniting with people of color, labor, environmentalists, socialists, populists and other "progressives" to form a viable third party alternative to the two party farce we have now. When we put aside our differences we will surprisingly come to see that our commonalities far outweigh our differences. Then the prostitutes of the democratic party will no what true fear is!”

The Ft. Hood Massacre: A Lone-Wolf Jihad of One?

Commented Nov 10, 2009 at 12:17:45 in Politics

“The tragedy at Ft. Hood was without a doubt a heartbreaking tragedy. However it was bound to happen sooner or later. Dr. Hasan a military psychiatrist was well aware of the horror stories from returning war veterans especially those suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

He had to be aware of the military's downplaying of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder amongst returning veterans. The rate of PTSD is at record high and resources for these soldiers are scarce. There are reports of soldiers with PTSD ordered back to combat duty despite the obvious danger to the soldier and his/her comrades .

This does not excuse or lessen the severity of his crime. However he was obviously a bomb waiting to explode. Torn between professional and religous convictions and perhaps even mental health issues, he lost it. The result is 13 dead and 31 injured including himself.

We must ask ourselves does Hasan's crime take precedent over the crimes of Bush ,et al in starting wars that have no justification, have no apparent end and have accomplished little in bringing to justice the criminals of 9/11!

Justice for the Ft. Hood victims will come about when Obama orders the troops home NOW! Adequate funding for the VA healthcare system must be assured so that returning vets have resources to heal their physical and emotional injuries! Lastly we must also demand that Bush and Cheyney be brought to justice! The real crime began with them and where it must ultimatley end!

.”

bottomdwellah replied on Nov 10, 2009 at 19:10:00

“The crimes of one group can indeed lead to crimes by another. Imagine the forgiveness we would realize with the Muslim world by charging Bush et al with war crimes, dereliction of duty, and lying to the citizens of the United States of America. Much of this terrorism would stop immediately. If we then pursued an equitable solution to the Israel-Palestine issue, the good will would be greatly compounded. We choose instead to sacrifice, billions, maybe TRILLIONS of dollars, and THOUSANDS of lives. What kind of sense does that make? Sacrifice a former president, and a few of his cronies, and we will NEVER have to go through anything like this again! ( Well, never say never but...)”

What Olympia Snowe's Support Could Mean

Commented Oct 16, 2009 at 11:49:42 in Politics

“Snowe's support means nothing. The bill that was voted on is useless. The HMOs and other healthcare corporations stand to make a lot of money while the quality of our care continues to decline. I heard that about 26 million will still be uninsured and now the idiots want to tax us?

With or without any GOP support the dems have managed to sell us to the healthcare insurance corporatists! It's a lose, lose situation for the common people!”

Why Obama Should Not Have Received the Peace Prize -- Yet

Commented Oct 12, 2009 at 16:58:26 in Politics

“I respectfully disagree with your last sentence. I voted for the president and despite my not always agreeing with his positions, I do respect the man. (unlike his predecessor who I despised)

However President Obama must bring an end to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq! Neither war has accomplished much except line the pockets of the arms manufacturers and sub-contractors who have shown what unscrupulous bastards that they are! Both of these wars have also shown the world that U.S. imperialism is the true reason for the wars rather than to "stop terrorism."

Another gesture towards truly earning the Nobel prize would be to investigate and fully prosecute Bush, Cheyney, et al for their crimes against the people of the United States as well as crimes against humanity! I say this NOT in a tone of revenge, but rather as one who seeks JUSTICE!

President Obama, you do have the opportunity to go down in history as one of the best if not the greatest presidents in our history. However you must begin listening to the people, not your assistants and advisers who haven't a clue as to what the right thing is!”

“Both Moore and Grayson deserve kudos for their skills in telling it like it REALLY is and not a lot of b.s. like the apologists for the HMOs have been doing!
Unfortunatley it will take more than verbal skills to shame Congress and the White House into doing the right thing! Politicians that accept legal bribes from healthcare corporatists could care less what you tell them! They are laughing all the way to the bank! What is needed now is for activists to plead our case to the United Nations and shame the HMOs and Congress before the world!”

Glenn Beck Isn't Blocking Health Care Reform

Commented Oct 08, 2009 at 11:57:38 in Politics

“With all due respect Codycap why would these same corrupt politicians pass legislation that would limit their receiving what amounts to as legal bribes? Think about it! If we can't get REAL healthcare reform due to healthcare corporatists buying off weak politicians, how are we going to see real campaign reforms passed?

Whether one is Democrat or Republican is not the issue. The issue is that our electoral system is seriously flawed and that is by design! Neither party truly represents the interests of working people, the elderly, the poor or those with disabilities. Opportunists exist in both parties and this is precisely why we cannot get REAL healthcare reform passed!

I would propose that trade unionists, environmentalists, REAL liberals (as opposed to neo), populists, socialists, etc unite and build a viable alternative to the corruption we are stuck with now! Until then we and our families will never see any good come from our esteemed Congressional representatives!”

Beca replied on Oct 08, 2009 at 18:13:31

“Justicia, you are correct. However, we do have more power than we think, we have just abdicated that power and given it to the powerful corporate lobbyists. VOTING! It does not matter how much money the corporate lobbyists give members of Congress for their re-election campaigns, if the American people were better informed on the issues at stake, were ALL registered to vote (those 18 and over), and ALL registered voters actually arrived at the polling stations armed with FACTUAL information on the issues that matter to them, rather than the garbage fed to us by the media and lobbyist's campaigns, and then all voted, we would effectively neutralize the power these corrupt corporate lobbyists would have on our elected officials. It's about not sitting back and waiting for a change to happen, it is about getting off our fat asses and 1) help educate people around us on facts vs garbage, and 2) making sure everyone we know is registered to vote and actually votes on every election. What's it going to be? It's up to us really.”

“It is a populist cause that we could have the entire public behind.

As you say, we will never get it otherwise because big money will always make sure it will not ever come to a vote unless ALL the people come together to FORCE their hand.

It has to be a grassroots movement of citizens. That is the only way we can have enough power.

It cannot be a Democratic movement; right-wingers will fight anything that comes from our party so it would fail. It cannot be a Republican movement; progressives will fight anything that comes from that party so it would fail. It HAS to be a GRASSROOTS non-ideological bill on the one thing that I believe the left, middle, and right agree on.

EVERYONE would come together on this. All the suggestions that are being made I.E. term limits, spending amounts etc. etc. would be corrected by this one thing, Campaign Reform.

I haven't researched on how to pass a constitutional amendment , how many signatures it would take etc. but I KNOW it can be done.

The beauty of the Internet would make it much easier to get signatures than ever in our history.

If we could get people like Dylan Ratigan, Keith Olberman, Ed Shultz and their counterparts on the right to back say an amendment, we could do it.

What citizen would not sign a petition to stop corruption? Then we can say we are taking our country back.”

“I am afraid that brother Acuff must acknowledge that the Democratic Party has indeed sold out to the corporate monsters! Just look at what is going on with the so-called heatlhcare reform, the fight for cleaner environment and the Employee Free Choice Act.

So long as the democrats continue to accept the legal bribes from the corporations, workers and their families will not see the needed changes so sorely needed! We cannot match what the bosses bribe the politicians and we never will.

We must abandon the idea of depending on the democrats for change! We must take our concerns, our needs, our demands to the streets! Workers in France, England, Italy and Germany use this tactic and usually win or succeed in slowing down attacks against their standard of living. We must learn from these tactics as well.

I for one look forward to the development of a pro worker political party as well as more confrontational tactics to back up our demands! Chit chatting with sell out politicians is a waste of time!”

“One major difference that accounts for the superior healthcare system in France is the fact that the French labor movement is about 50 times stronger and more militant than ours.

Another major factor is that in France there are strong left wing parties that stand up for the people, unlike here where our so-called freedom is sold to the highest bidder!

In the motion picture SiCKO an American woman who chose to move to France summed it up quite nicely; In France the government is afraid of the people. In the U.S. the people are fearful of the government." (Please paragraphs one and two)”

“Sorry Ms. Huffington, but we have a hybrid version of capitalism in this country. It may not be the same capitalism that Adam Smith stood for, but capitalism it is. What we have at present is the first cousin to old fashioned capitalism; it is referred to as state monopoly capitalism. It is where competition has virtually been eliminated and the government protects the capitalists rather than the public. It is where the government is owned lock, stock and barrel by the corporate elite. Soon the Supreme Court will decide on a case that will basically give full sanctions to corporations buying their influence of government. When this occurs you, me and most other citizens will have little if any chance at getting needed legislative changes through Congress.

If President Obama does indeed see the movie I doubt that he would fully understand it. . Capitalism is a socio-economic system that thrives on exploitation, corruption, racism and war. Therefore capitalism is indeed evil. The current struggle to reform healthcare is a classic example of how evil capitalism is.”

Why Health Insurance Reform Will Pass This Fall -- It's the High Political Ground

Commented Sep 09, 2009 at 10:38:06 in Politics

“Health insurance reform? What happened to reforming our healthcare system(s)? Sure we might get some semblence of reform, however the culprits of our healthcare woes, the HMOs and Big Pharma will continue their profit binging at our expense.

Nothing substantial will change. Single payer was the only humane and viable alternative to the gross injustice we have now. Neither the White House or Congress has the guts to stand up to the healthcare corporate monsters! What a tragedy!

What is now needed is electoral reform! We need to change unfair laws to allow for the creation of viable political alternatives to the Democraatic and/or Republican monopoly. Our electoral system is far too corrupt for anyone to say we have a true democracy!”

This Labor Day, Is the World of Work a More Secure and Lawful Place?

Commented Sep 08, 2009 at 13:36:19 in Politics

“Labor Day should be celebrated to commemorate the struggle for the eight hour day, public schools and worker's right to organize. Instead it is now considered another excuse to run sales at local retail stores.

Locally hotel workers at the Grand Hyatt in downtown San Antonio are in a fight to form a union with UNITE HERE. Despite the fact that 62% of the workforce signed union cards, management will not recognize the union and has begun firing the more visible labor activists! So where is their protection to organize?
The NLRB became quite useless years ago. Today the bosses have total control of the government that at one time was supposed to protect us.

In the U.S. a very small percentage of the population (3-5%) control the government, the economy, the school systems, the news media, the entertainment industry and even a lot of the churches.
Is this a true democracy? Think about it. Those that rant and rave about the virtues of capitalism are those who profit from our sweat, our blood and our tears! Over a hundred and thrty five years ago plantation owners in the South used to rant and rave about the virtues of slavery! Do you see the parallel?”

“It is ironic that you should mention the money wasted in healthcare. While the quality of our healthcare dwindles, the profits of the HMOs continues to skyrocket upwards! It's not rocket science. We pay more for less so that corporate executives can make six and seven figure incomes! Meanwhile 18,000-22,000 Amereicans continue to die as they are either denied coverage or have needed treatments rejected!

At the Town Hall Meeting held by the congressman from the 20th Congressional District, my esteemed congressman had the audacity to ask the 1,000 or so in attendance; "What's wrong with the HMOs making an honest profit?" I guess he's either to stupid to realize that few if any HMO profits are earned honestly or he's in the pockets of the HMOs. ( He received over $130,000 from the corporate healthcare leeches)

Yes, healthier lifestyles are definitley in order. So are healthier mindsets on healthcare. We must overcome the negative mindset that healthcare is a commodity. The rest of the world considers healthcare a basic HUMAN RIGHT! So when is the United States going to come into the 21st Century??”

True Health Care Reform: 10 Missing Pieces

Commented Aug 25, 2009 at 14:58:46 in Living

“In reality SS the people of the United States are indeed ready for healthcare reform. Unfortunatley the President has changed the emphasis to "health insurance" reform.
Another reality is that our healthcare system(s) is profit driven rather than service driven. Until we change our mindset on this REAL healthcare reform will not become a reality! Last night I attended a Town Hall Meeting sponsored by my Congressman in the 20th Congressional District. Much to my dismay he asked the 1,000 or so people present; "What is wrong with the HMOs making an honest profit?" Obviously this guy is either stupid or he's been bought off by the corporate healthcare interests! ( He has received over $130,000 in contributions) When elected officials see no moral wrong doing of corporations profiteering at our expense, then the whole system is corrupted and must be replaced!

Removal of the corporate influence, healthcare education, stricter control of the additives in our foods and moving towards a more green energy system are all great ideas for the future of our nations's health. The issue is will WE THE PEOPLE stand up to the corporate parasites that have profiteered for so long at our expense? Are we willing to seek alternative candidates from the corporate owned and controlled two parties currently in control?”

Health Reform: Throwing Good Money After the Bad

Commented Aug 24, 2009 at 17:11:54 in Politics

“What is conveniently not mentioned by Congress or the President is that the HMOs are solely responsible for the deaths of 18,000-22,000 Americans annually either because they were denied coverage or could not afford the high costs! Also because of HMO greed more than 50% of personal bankruptcies in the U.S. are due to the cost of catastrophic illness!
