Ten Things That Totally Sucked About The Media In 2009
Commented Jan 01, 2010 at 11:50:40 in Media
“We wouldn't even have a problem like Sarah if it wasn't for a slobbering media pumping her up. Please let her slide into the oblivion she deserves & stop turning her into some sort of player that she is not. Media is the biggest problem we have in our political sphere - they take a non-story, or a completely irrelevant aspect of a story, and skew, distort and highlight it to the expense of the real meat of the story for their own ratings gain, totally undermining our democratic process in the bargain. Every minute that is given to some moronic non-story like balloon boy or Tiger's exploits is robbing us of time that should be committed to real information. Things that deserve a 30 second mention are covered in 24 hour rotation while things we need to see covered intelligently and in depth are given the 30 second sound bite treatment. People cannot make intelligent decisions when they're being fed drivel by the media that is responsible for informing them in a free society. Rather than being the backbone of our democracy, our supposedly "free" media is doing irreparable harm to it.”

“And she is a problem... .......... ..By the way, envy not only involves coveting another's possession s/achievem ent, but also the desire to deny others their success.
Envy (also called invidiousness) may be defined as an emotion that "occurs when a person lacks another's (perceived) superior quality, achievement, or possession and either desires it or wishes that the other lacked it."[1]
Envy can also derive from a sense of low self-esteem that results from an upward social comparison threatening a person's self image: another person has something that the envier considers to be important to have. If the other person is perceived to be similar to the envier, the aroused envy will be particularly intense, because it signals to the envier that it just as well could have been he or she who had the desired object.[”

MoveOn.Org Comes Out Against Senate Health Care Billl
Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 18:44:58 in Politics
“Actually, MoveOn does have the right to "go ballistic" on issues it supports - that's what grassroots organizations do - they get their supporters to take action to address things that need addressing in the most effective way possible, or as you call it, "going ballistic. " We're facing a relentless right wing in this country that will stop at no dirty deed in order to obstruct and destroy. Too many Democrats either don't know how to fight it or they are too busy making nice in some sort of misguided belief that it is possible to negotiate with vipers.
MoveOn knows better, and if "going ballistic" is what it takes then so be it. When you're up against a relentless opposition that wants to destroy you then you better have the good sense to do everything in your power to get rid of them.”

Democrats Lash Out At Obama Over Health Care Disappointments

“It is time to take the gloves off with Obama and Reid - let them know that the people who worked the hardest to put them in the positions they are in are the ones most infuriated by this thing now.
What we are experiencing - and they are letting it happen - is minority control of our future. Joe Lieberman and a small handful of right wing Democrats are keeping us hostage to the insurance mafia.
I've contacted both Obama and Reid to say that this is absolutely unacceptable, that they are kicking us all in the teeth by kowtowing to these traitors, and that if they think this is giving us any reason to show up and do for them in 2012 what we did for them in 2008 they're nuts.
They have tools at their disposal to make this happen - reconciliation, and the Rethugs are not the only ones who can come up with a "nuclear option." They have to fear us more than they fear a handful of right-wing crybabies. If they can't find the guts to get as brutal and relentless as the enemy then we have to scare them into it.”

“Am I English - in ancestry, absolutely, but I am thoroughly American - my family has been here since the colonies, 100 years BEFORE the revolution, a revolution that several of them fought in because they weren't receiving proper representation as ENGLISHMEN - that's how they became AMERICAN. I know my American history quite well, thank you, as my family has participated in about 300 years of it, just as they participated in several centuries of English history prior to that.
Respecting your own culture does not mean taking arrogant pride in being an ignorant brute. A self-respecting, intelligent person with confidence in their own strength and some understanding of cultures outside their own neighborhood has no problem bowing or curtsying as a matter of respect and protocol; an ignorant fool who's insecure about themselves and their culture considers it as some sort of slight to their shaky, misguided notions of strength and the resulting need to feel themselves "superior. " A person who can show respect by bowing when it's culturally appropriate comes across as a much more confident and strong person than one who feels threatened by doing so. It's obvious you are pathologically insecure and extremely undereducated - stop insulting our closest allies and embarrassing yourself and your fellow Americans with your idiocy.”

Privately-Run Public Option Compromise Eyed By Senate Democrats
Commented Dec 07, 2009 at 13:19:03 in Politics
“If this is supposed to be like the same plan the Congress and Senate has, which apparently it is, this could be a positive development in breaking this stalemate, since I remember this being something that was being held up in the beginning as them having access to a better option that we in the general public didn't have access to. It also seemed as if they were making a major mess of the public option. We will eventually get to single payer health care in this country, but it's going to be incremental (just like it was in Canada, as a Canadian pointed out to me) - no matter what we get this fight is going to continue.”

“The right wingers think that we want this for other people but that we wouldn't want to have it ourselves, and that's the card that they played today. They don't realize many of us are hanging in there in dead end jobs while running our own business on the side, unable to devote our full time and entrepreneurial energy into growing our businesses because we're stuck working a 40 hour week for someone else just to get health care. Our so-called health care system is nothing but a means of keeping the majority of us in indentured servitude because we couldn't begin to afford to pay for health care on our own. In this economy, there are more of us than ever before realizing the need to bring in extra income with our own businesses, to not be wholly reliant upon an employer, realizing we could be very successful at it if we could devote our full time to our own business instead of having to split our time with the "benefits" job.
The suppression of entrepreneurial energy is what I find puzzling about this obstructionism - I thought the right wingers were all about business, so why are they working so hard to put a damper on small business people? I'm not only fighting for the public option, I'm demanding that it be accessible to anyone who wants into it - forget about a "tradition" of employer-based health care - it's nothing but an anti-entre preneurial trap.”

I think when repubs talk about small business what they really mean is that they think jobs are entitlements for people who are too lazy to start their own business. “You should email your story to your Congressperson.
It is a strong argument - that the inability to get or provide health care is a crushing weight upon the entrepreneurial spirit and small business in America.
Those are the very things the Republicans use to block each and every legislative act that doesn't divert more of America's wealth into their constituents' pockets...
Of course, the accrued wealth of those constituents that the Republicans cater to is far, far beyond the scope of small business. That fact needs to be brought to America's attention.
Your story would help shed light upon it.”

Mike Penner Dead: "LA Times" Sportswriter, AKA Christine Daniels, Committed Suicide At 52, Colleagues Say

“I find it very troubling that she went back to calling herself Mike Penner. What was that about? Had to be some extreme internal dissonance there. Most transsexuals do not assume their previous identity again. I live in Los Angeles and remember the column mentioned in the article where she revealed her intention to become Christine Daniels it was one of the only articles I've ever read in the sports pages. She later said that she expected to receive extremely negative responses to her admission, but that she received 500 supportive letters (one of them was mine) and only 2 negative ones.”

“I've known of people to go back to their old identity because close family members threatened to cut off all contact. Unfortunately, sometimes they cut off all contact anyway.
Alternatively, I wonder if, for some people, transitioning back to their former name and outward gender presentation might be a way of continuing to move forward, not backward. Maybe through their transition, they learned what they needed to, and then it was time to go on to something else.
It's possible that if Mike/Christine did commit suicide, it maybe didn't have anything to do with gender identity. Certainly most people who commit suicide are not transgendered.
In any case, it's very sad.”
