The Healing Has Begun... U.S. Senate Apologizes For Slavery

Commented Jun 20, 2009 at 15:09:41 in Politics

“The apology was made a long time ago...in blood. Arlington Cemetery and a host of National Cemeteries across this nation hold the bodies of those Americans who gave their lives to make men free. The apology of a bunch of useless Washington hacks, who have more important business to attend to does not begin to be equivalent to the apology that has already been given to African Americans. You would know this is if your community spent any time really learning the history of the American Civil War and your place in that history.

The apology you should seek is for this nation's failure to provide your community with the Equal Rights and Opportunities that were won for you on the battlefields of the 1860's. Apologizing for the sins of previous generations is a hollow gesture and you should be smart enough to understand that.”

“Most African Americans are quite aware of the "history" of the Civil war (which many African Americans also served in---of course in segregated regiments as my great-great grandfather did). And while we all honor the memory of those who died to make people free, it is the institution of slavery that is the root cause for many years of residual hatred, racism, and inequality experienced by the African American community. And of course, it was Slavery which caused the need for the Civil war and all the subsequent deaths that occurred as a result of war. So, since, slavery is the root of it all. Why not start with the root cause? Any trained or professional social or organizational analyst will tell you that is the only way to solve problems.”

Nommo replied on Jun 20, 2009 at 21:40:09

“You know the history of the Civil War? There are a number of posts here that expose the lie of wars being fought to free people. The only wars that are fought to free people are those fought by people seeking freedom.”

“Good insights. As a parent, I'm troubled by Hollywood's version of the world. Certainly having a child at 18 is rough...but that movie wouldn't sell tickets. But the reality of teen pregnancy is all to real in small towns here in Oklahoma and across this country from Pennsylvania to Texas.

Not surprisingly, the Bible Belt seems to suffer disproportionately from teen pregnancy. Apparently abstinence, promise rings, and no sex ed does little to curb the God-given biology we all possess.

There are actually billboards here in Tulsa that claim Birth Control is harmful to your health. The ignorance of such statements is breath taking...but those same people who approve of that message probably really enjoyed 17 Again. Ignorance is bliss until it isn't.”

“Having been born '65...I'm at the front end of the X'rs and truly we are generation that will probably be lost to history. We have lived in the shadows of the boomers...who even today still control the world we live in.

The Boomers have like locusts cleaned the field before them and finally left it completely barren. We X'rs will likely suffer in our Elder years as the backlash against the Elderly sets in following the Boomers who will have it their way until they die.

So like Prince Charles who will never hold the crown his mother refuses to reliquinsh...we X'rs will have to hope that you of the Y generation can remake the world in a way that is beyond our grasp.

And don't fret the narcissism stuff. The Boomers have done it for decades now...you now Happy Days and anything associated with the ridiculous 1950's High School experience. Were they still talking about the great 1850's in 1900...seems doubtful.

All well good luck Y Generation.”

So get your rant out of the way and move on. Don't let the small minded religious views of another human being get you down.

And not to sound as preachy as Miss California ... but I'm in a long term heterosexual marriage with a partner I adore, yet that doesn't preclude others of differing likes/dislikes from choosing partners who work for them. Everyone should have that right; and marriage isn't about one person telling another who to be intimate with (that's far too hostile for me).”

“Good grief...you didn't really listen to what Biden said...did you. Actually what Biden said is what the CDC should be saying. And in the context of the question he was asked, his answer was frank and honest. That's the stuff that courage is made of. I love a politician who says what he means and what he thinks. He's smart enough to know that if this Swine Flu is a deadly pandemic...than hell yes you should stay off planes and trains...if you can.

Your outrage and that of others is that his frank comments spark fear. But just what will this nation do if a "real" pandemic like the Spanish Flu hits this country. Will we not take action because it will cost the travel industry money or will we do what is necessary to stop it??

Sadly, people like yourself don't seem prepared to accept that what Joe Biden is saying is actually a rational response to a pandemic.

You may not like a VP that speaks his mind honestly...but I do and since I voted for him...he can stay.”

“Verdict...you seek a verdict...but you seem to think that it's only a few. Sadly the verdict is against every one us. Our government is of, by and for the people. In our own frightened and wholly seflish desire to for unattainable security we "allowed" the Bush Administration to violate everything that once made us Americans.

The indictment is against us all. And so must the final verdict be as well.”

“Personally, I don't blame you all for Bush and Co., nor do I think you are all co-conspirators with Bush and Co., nor do I confuse America with Americans nor with the American Government and particularly not with particular Presidents.

The indictment is not against America, nor is it against Americans, what kind of reductionist kool aid is this?

But you might have an individual guilty mind behind this maudlin bastardization of citizenship by which you might personally hope to escape individual accounting?”

SpringDoc replied on Mar 01, 2009 at 22:01:58

“Well isn't that an easy write off. I don't buy it and won't accept it. I do agree that our representation in Washington failed this country horribly by not holding the bush administration accountable for the corruption and crimes by the federal government. Of course, not all are guilty. The Representatives that stood with Dennis Kucinich on Resolution 333 are to be celebrated for their bravery. Pelosi sold out, to get the Speaker position. She can redeem herself now by standing with Conyers in holding those reponsible for the crimes committed over the past 8 years. Will she stand with him all the way? This remains to be seen.”

“What's amazing is that Republicans so rarely extol the ideas of Teddy Roosevelt. Perhaps this is because Teddy understood that people always act in their own interests and rarely in the interest of their neighbors, their communities or ultimately their country. "Country First" is the most hollow battle cry we have yet seen from the radical right. Teddy, personally held the captains of industry and banking accountable and understood that government has exactly that responsibility to its citizens to protect them not only from physical foreign or domestic threat, but also from the uncurbed greed of their neighbors.

Perhaps today we need protection from the seditious hatred spewed by the Glen Becks around us.”

“I like your comments. Sadly, Ann is the wrong messenger for a message that does not to get out. Kids do need a mom and a dad. Both enrich the life of a child. I learned a great many things from my liberal mother and my conservative, work-aholic father. I'm a better person for the lessons and examples they set for me.

I remember watching Toy Story for the first time and being very troubled by the lack of a father. No wonder this boy's attachment to Buzz was so strong. He had no other male role model in his life. And I wonder why the writers chose to leave a father out. Was it provide more reality to a movie about talking toys...a commentary on the state of American families?? We dads have value that is every bit as important as that provided by mothers. It takes both of us to make the child...isn't is reasonable to suggest that it takes both of us to raise it was well?”

Commented Jan 12, 2009 at 13:09:58 in Politics

“Well first, let's hope his grasp of history is a bit better.

"Despite his efforts to placate the South, rebels interpreted the Inaugural as a declaration of war, and the upper slaveholding states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas soon seceded."

C'mon...you know better. Lincoln's call for 75,000 men to put down the Rebellion is the act that drives Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina from the Union. Oh and it just so happens that these three states provide more than half of the troops for the Confederate forces. Unwilling to raise their hands against their fellow Southern States they took up arms against a Federal Government they felt was acting in opposition to the Constitution.

And of course, we can only wonder how much better off Haiti would be today had Douglas acted on his previous idea.”

Two Questions

Two Questions

Commented Jan 12, 2009 at 12:54:54 in Politics

“Absolutely correct. We are a nation on the cusp of becoming something far less than we were. At the end of World War II, the average German man or woman found themselves forced to acknowledge that their nation had engaged in horrible atrocities. Many sought solace in the knowledge that "I didn't know...I wasn't part of it."

Well we all know that none of us bought that argument. And folks that applies even so to Americans whose access to information is light years ahead of the average German living in 1940's Germany. And of course we glamourized our "national sin" on 24 each Sunday evening.

Well now it's game time and Americans have to do what Americans have always done...acknowledge our wrongs and set them right. This is what has always set us apart from other nations. Let's hope it always does.”

“Sorry dude...comparing Somalis to Robert Drake, Morgan, Blackbeard, etc. just doesn't work for me. And there are some contradictions to your story. Why dump nuclear and other wastes off-shore and then go after the fishing stocks in the same region?? Not sure I'm buying that one.

And you know...if these Somali "Robin Hoods" had any character worthy of note...wouldn't they be asking for something other than millions of dollars...of course they would...but they are a far cry from modern day "Robin Hoods". No these pirates whom you seem to want to praise are preying on shipping in order to secure money for the warlords whom they serve.

These are the same men who steal UN Aid Food Stuffs from their own starving people. These are men completely and wholly without honor and they do need to be eradicated for the benefit of the region and they own nation.

“The Wall Street "shareholder" virus plagues this industry as it does every industry. Companies don't manufacture or service stock value...yet that seems to be all that they or Wall Street care about. But do shareholders actually purchase the products and services provided by the companies whose stock they own...my guess is rarely if at all.

Companies need to stop worrying about Wall Street and Shareholders and worry about their paying customers...the reason they are in business in the first place.”

“Even if we accept the notion that WWII helped end the Depression...doesn't it validate Federal Intervention. After all 16 million Americans became government employees accepting their paychecks from Uncle Sam.

Talk about a stimulus package.”

DuganS1 replied on Dec 28, 2008 at 17:42:45

“Not really. In 1939-1940 FDR got rid of the last of the New Dealers and brought in a massive number of business leaders (like Ed Stettinus from US Steel) to help put the economy on solid footing for possible war. FDR then put forth pro-corporate measures to stimulate private investment and enable corporations to make a large amount of money on government contracts. Examples include the elimination of low bid contracts and creation of the cost plus contract, protecting companies from possible higher costs and virtually guaranteeing profits. FDR also pushed through measures for companies to accelerate depreciation allowances and increase investment related tax write-offs to get around the mid-30s excess profits tax. He also got rid of the undistributed profits tax. All this enabled corporations to accumulate large profits during the war which they used to invest afterwards. FDR also dramatically increased direct govt investment and hired private companies to operate the facilities on the very favorable terms listed above. Many of the facilities were sold to corporations at rock bottom prices at war end and were retooled for private sector related production. etc. etc.”

“Hm... Perhaps to spread portions of the regulatory duties to various other government organizations (with redundancy and overlap to prevent compromisations in any one or perhaps even multiple strands of the net from negating regulatory influence) and rather than disbanding the SEC, perhaps reshaping their job to managing and analyzing the resultant data, and then investigating and prosecuting any offenders?

Of course, that would work best if the SEC's funds were increased to allow them the best equipment and staff for that task and a massive increase in the minimum mandatory punishment for infractions -- and of corruption and dereliction of duty on the side of the SEC and every other regulatory agency as well, since responsibility requires accountability as well.”

Defiance is Not Just Another Holocaust Movie: Jews Can Be Tough Guys, Too

Commented Dec 11, 2008 at 13:11:33 in Entertainment

“This is an important movie, much like Uprising, which depicted the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943. Why is it important? Mainly because history has done a poor job in teaching us that the Jewish peoples throughout Europe did in fact resist.

I myself was unaware of this until I saw the book, Atlas of the Holocaust, which detailed the locations and activities of resistance groups much like the one depicted in Defiance. And I was further surprised to discover how local Poles, Russians, Ukrainians. Balts, etc. would often turn these groups in to the Nazi authorities. Far too often, the German people alone wear the guilt of the Holocaust. The truth is that the Germans had far too many helpers.”

“I have to agree with Jan on this issue. I am a 40's business professional who enjoys Linked-in and Facebook. It has allowed me to reconnect with friends, co-workers, and family that I otherwise would not have the opportunity to interact with. I live in a state far from family and friends and am certainly not unique is this, as many Americans are increasingly mobile as they move with the job market.

And google, Flickr, and YouTube...well honestly, they are almost my library into the world. It's better than TV, better than books and allows me to explore the world in much the same way I used to spend hours wandering in the Valparaiso Library so many years ago. And the best part is that I am in control of the content that I want to see with the limited free time that I as a working American have to do such things. When traveling overseas on business these sites keep me connected to home and the English language...particularly useful if you have ever had to watch Italian TV...(and I don't wish that on anyone).

These sites are supplying a need that many of us want filled in addition to the "real" world physical contacts we have. Besides I can't travel 1000 miles nightly to visit my brother...but on Facebook...it's like he's next door.”
