“Living in Red States as long as I have, I have become very accustomed to the "Rush Limbaugh" mindset. And it is very troubling how successful Rush and Hannity and Beck have been in shaping the mindset of the conservative "Religious" right in this country.

Hatred is the only the tip of the iceberg. Rush and others have been poisoning the airwaves since the Clinton Administration. Their listeners believe all the hooey they spout and have grown increasing intolerant of other points of view and push their own views with an assertiveness bordering on bullying.

It's ironic that Rush and his ilk cast about Nazi comparisons...when in truth they seem to operate from same political playbook used by the S.A. to undermine the Weimar Republic.”

“Your post just reminded me of an short article in AARP magazine which referred to a condition (whose name I forget) wherein people who hold particular views, after listening to or watching those whose views match theirs, reinforce those views. So if crazies listen to other crazies, they're gonna get more crazy.

I would like to think that the vast majority of us have a "wait a minute" pause button that prevents our blindly going down the yellow brick road of our choice. But I know that a percentage of us will merely chant "yeah yeah" upon hearing certain buzzwords without bothering to think about hidden agendas or possible manipulation. How sad for us all.”

Imagine living in St. Louis and working in Chicago or waking up on a Saturday and deciding to shop on Rush Street and be back home to St. Louis, Indianapolis, or Milwaukee before dinner.

“I agree and again we see that Matthews likes it be about him all too often. He even tried to make Ayers bombing personal by his association with this and that Capitol Policeman. Iike Matthews for the most part, but sometimes he tries too hard to push the dialogue in the direction he wants it to go instead of just asking a simple question and shutting up long enough for the person to answer.

And had Matthews listened with an unfiltered ear...he might have learned something last night . Ayers certainly made the attempt to ask the question..."How do you effectively protest when the government and the media in in lock-step?" Certainly a relevant question today, when the media essentially ignored most protests against the Iraq War.”

Yeah...let's just sit back and watch 500,000+ of our brothers and sisters hit the pavement to look for jobs ...you know like Wal-Mart, fast food if they are lucky...and of course they will earn next to nothing, barely be able to afford the health plan (forget about 401K) and that doesn't include all the suppliers to the automotive industry who will suffer and lay off maybe three times that 500K...so maybe 1.5 million American workers directly impacted and the rest of us as well...whether we understand that or not. We need people to earn good money and spend that money on the things yours and my company manufacture...which in turn helps our stocks and keeps the Wall Street ticks happy.

Who knows...the job you ultimately save might just be your own.”

BobinPgh replied on Dec 07, 2008 at 20:11:26

“But really, it seems the only reason for the bailout is to save miserable jobs to make a product nobody wants. Its all about the jobs that, really, does anyone actually WANT to be an autoworker?. Really, what has GM done for humanity? People are not going to die if they cannot buy Chevrolet.

The reason I bring this up is that when Chrysler was bailed out one question that was asked and never answered is what has the company done but build ugly, expensive, polluting, unreliable, gas guzzlers through its whole history. Now I ask the same question of all 3 of them.”

TheBlackCat replied on Dec 07, 2008 at 20:10:59

“It's not that I don't have sympathy for the auto workers, can't see the arguments for the bailout, can't see that having 1.5 million workers out of work...

but the thing is, many people have already had to deal with this. M hometown is Leominster, Ma, which used to be the plastics capital of the world. Then all the plastics companies went down, most noticably the Foster Grant plant. It was really hard for awhile there, and i can remember neighbors in my middle class neighborhood going door to door looking for odd jobs. But we eventually recovered, and are now a pretty vibrant community. But the thing is, we didn't ask anyone to bail out the plastics industry, and no one would have if we had asked. The plants closed for a reason. They were no longer competitive. They were outdated. Inefficient industries die, and it's very hard, but my community came back from this, during the recession back during George Bush Sr.

So while the story you tell is sad...it's kind of like, welcome to the club.

Of course, I definitly understand that the big three going under is very different because of the number of workers involved. It's just that sob stories about hitting the pavement aren't your best line of argument. Many of us have already been there, and no one came to our rescue.”

KarateKid replied on Dec 07, 2008 at 19:57:31

“It is the auto worker who has lived in a cocoon. Welcome to the world the rest of us already know, and have had to fend for ourselves. Your scare stories aren't going to work. And by not bailing out the Big 3, it won't mean the end of the line. Chapter 11 will hold off the creditors and force the management to open up its books. They're building auto plants in China and Russia; that doesn't sound like companies in dire straits, only in THIS country.”

“Statistics will never talk to us the way images do. War is pain and death...that's it. Today's war has been sanitized like that Star Trek episode where folks just go to be vaporized in a war that has no real shooting.

And honoring our veterans and are fallen is a national responsibility. We have nearly 30,000 wounded from this war and yet their plight rarely makes the news unless it is to score political points for one party or the other.

HBO's Section 60 was the most moving documentary I have seen regarding the cost of this war.

And yet again, just one more thing that FDR got right...when he made the decision to allow the images of fallen Americans at Bouganville to be released to the public. He understood that America needed to understand the real cost of the Second World War.

The failure to consider the cost of war is to ensure that succeeding generations of Americans will embark on more ill-conceived adventures at the cost of still more lives.”

“Utlimately isn't Veterans Day all about the cost. Is that not what makes serving in the Armed Forces different from anything else we do as citizens. All of us contribute to the greatness of our nation, but only a few actually serve in harm's way.

It is the cost that forces us to pause and remember the countless number of Americans who have given up their lives, their limbs, their sight, their futures...so that we may retain ours.

When we visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, we are there to contemplate the loss, not the pageantry of war. We are there to honor the loss of American known but to God and in my own limited view, Veterans Day is about remembering those we have lost.”

OkieIntellectual replied on Nov 12, 2008 at 16:42:11

“Yes, and remembering that cost hopefully makes us look into the future and, when faced with similar circumstances, ask if we are willing to pay that cost again, if its really worth it, or if we can find a better way to resolve a conflict.

That's the whole point, that's why we MUST remember how terrible war is, and how much it costs us, both in lives and dollars. We must be able to look back on the lessons of the past to try to find a better way to live in the future.”
