It's Time to Ignore the Paralyzing Cynicism and Get Engaged

Commented Sep 28, 2011 at 10:33:05 in Politics

“Sure, but he still went and really it wasn't a positive thing for him if he was planning on running for President then because of all of the partisan nonsense. My point is the POTUS is not just a person, it is an office and should be respected. You can disagree with policy, but this notion of trashing people because they are democrat or republican without really understanding what they stand for (I find it hard to believe that EVERYTHING Obama does ALL republicans would always be against. These folks need to remember that democrats and republicans aren't their only constituents.”

Commented Sep 28, 2011 at 00:19:54 in Politics

“Thanks Kal. I really appreciated the fact that you stepped up to serve at the pleasure of the President and left "House." This is the kind of dedication and respect the office used to hold on both sides of the aisle. I live in Utah, and certainly don't vote along his party lines, but I also respected Huntsman for stepping up to serve as well.

I admire people who put action behind their words.”

I am shivering with excitement about the fun, quirky mormon secrets that will soon be revealed with the Mittster getting closer to the nomination!
-Secret Names!
-Secret Handshakes!
-Special Jammies!
-Special handwritten notes to get into the temple approved by your neighbor who also gets to know about your income!
-Annointing in special places!

This is better than the junk in the newsstands about those Kardashian people!”

“Oh Dear Lord...do you even read anything or just listen to your entertainers like Rush, Glenn and Hannity spouting hate and encouraging fear instead of critical thinking and analysis.

What DO you know about health care reform? Lay it out for me! I'd love to hear what you're basing your "death panel" nonsense on?”

zdubchi on Sep 28, 2011 at 22:49:17

“Do you read the comments before replying to them or is reading too difficult for you?

My comment was a reply to Kerry's assertion that the GOP is on the cutting edge of a majority. I disagree because when you poll the issues they're positions are in the minority by a lot.

I said: "I'd like to think that a majority of the nation doesn't want someone to be put to death if they don't have insurance." The situation the audience at the GOP debate were cheering about (if you were paying attention). From that you figured I was a tea partyer who believes in death panels.

Katholeen...READING IS FUNDAMENTAL.”

Get Money Out: Join 100,000 Americans

Commented Sep 27, 2011 at 23:23:23 in Politics

“Keep special interests out of the political bribery that is happening on our country. Let's see...
Who's interests would you push for first?
The 20 billion dollar company who sent you 500k, or the poor senior who is pushing for medicare assistance who can't afford to contribute anything but time?
Money buys votes every-day. How else can you explain the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries winning over the needs of the american public? $$$=Bribes...they do it with MD's as well to get them to prescribe their drugs. Lunch, trips, "seminars".....that could all be spent on those who are disadvantaged vs. pimping for profits. MD's should go to seminars about new medications through ethical means...not a trip to the wine country for the weekend courtesy of Pfizer.”

They don't really KNOW anything about it except the junk they are being fed from the "entertainers" like Rush and Hannity and Beck (I think I just vomited a little in my mouth). There is no more true debate on these issues, just hate speech and fear mongering. I have entry level managers who make 45k and the insurance is costing them (even with our subsidy) 10k a year with an outrageous deductible. Insurance companies can cherry-pick for profit on the backs of people's health.”

“I like that. I also like to look at it from the perspective of car insurance (yeah...yeah...it's not apples to oranges, but I like my analogy anyway).

You must have car insurance to protect yourself and others when you drive. Why shouldn't we have to do the same with health insurance? Sure, you can get more comprehensive levels dependent upon what you need/want, but everyone must be covered to some level.

We pay so much because hospitals absorb the cost from those who don't pay.

My company can't get affordable insurance for it's employees because the plan is outrageously expensive and most employees can't afford it. Only those who can't get an individual plan enroll (read...anyone who has had ANYTHING wrong with them in the past) so the loss ratio is higher than the premiums we pay. That's with a group of 100 employees. It's just absolute c&%p that a 50 million dollar company is jacked by the insurance companies so they can make a profit off of people's backs.

Do you know what they insurance companies did when the reform came to force insurance companies not to use a pre-exisisting condition clause on children? They closed all of the individual plans for children and did not offer them anymore. Therefore, people can't get individual plans for their children any longer. The kids have the qualify through the parents for individual plans and if the parents can't qualify.....too bad kiddies!”

It bums me out to see that he stepped away from legislation he was so proud of when it was the right thing to do for people. If he was ethical, he would take credit and let the chips fall where they may. Trying to mold your ideals to others for votes will never work in the long run.”

LDS Church Ad Campaign: Why Mormons Are on Your Billboards

Commented Sep 26, 2011 at 21:08:23 in Religion

“There there....don't yell now. Well, I've been to most religious churches in the US including synagogues (temples) where those in the Jewish religion worship. I do not know of any other mainstream religions in the US which prevent chapel, church, temple and cathedral entrance or have any of the secrets that the LDS do. You pointed out yourself that "you don't know how other temples work." Well, I conclude that to mean that you have never looked outside of your own 4 walls and educated yourself about those around you. Church IS different than your "temple"

To start, those who preside over worship in those houses are for the most part, actually theologians with a college or religious education, not just lay-people who have a good standing in the community. They UNDERSTAND religion and how it applies to the global community and how it intertwines with their religions. Plus, they've been around a heck of a long longer than 150 years.”

“Sigh..Yes, you can see by my post that I am completely anti-American. Wow! The entire point of my post can be reviewed at Wikipedia.com if you search on Mormonism and Christianity. The LDS faith is an "off-shoot" (and I use that generously) of mainstream Christianity. If you really want to understand a point vs. attacking someone by being ignorant, then you've certainly won. Good luck and I hope you have an opportunity to climb out of the box you've been living in to compare your religion to what Catholics, Baptists, Evangelicals, Protestants, Lutherans all have in common...one hint...they don't believe God lives on Kolob.”

“Finally, charitable and religious organizations which receive a 501(c)(3) tax exemption have a clear and simple choice to make: they can engage in religious activities and retain their exemption or they can engage in political activity and lose it, but they cannot engage in political activity and retain their exemption:

A religious organization that engages in substantial activity aimed at influencing legislation is disqualified from tax exemption, whatever the motivation. ...The free exercise clause of the First Amendment is restrained only to the extent of denying tax exempt status and then only in keeping with an overwhelming and compelling Governmental interest: That of guaranteeing that the wall separating church and state remain high and firm. ...The taxpayer may engage in all such activities without restraint, subject, however, to withholding of the exemption or, in the alternative, the taxpayer may refrain from such activities and obtain the privilege of exemption.”

“Help me understand here, because the Church encouraged its members to speak up and contribute. I am unaware to what extent the Church-as-an-entity directly contributed to the referendum campaign. Also, an issue with that interpretation is that the language seems to be aimed at "lobbying" activities like contacting legislatures. Thanks for thoughtful remarks.”
