“Of ALL the weak excuses you could have offered for the Party of No . . . . . saying well the Dems wouldn't have read it anyway is just lame.

It's not about Dems, it's about American citizens and voters.

And you all keep saying YOU are the party who represents the REAL Americans and the majority . . . . so if you put a plan out, wouldn't all of that majority of REAL Americans want to read it???

If you'd been around in 1776, you'd have been telling Jefferson not to write the Declaration of Independence "because the Loyalists won't read it anyway."”

“IF you want to go there -- the process of voting "present" and why senators (ALL of them, Repub and Dem) -- be truthful. Those present votes were cast in the Illinois state senate (not U.S.) and here are the rules:

Unlike Congress and the legislatures of most other states, each chamber of the Illinois Legislature requires a “constitutional majority” to pass a bill. The state Senate has 59 members, so it takes 30 affirmative votes. This makes a “present” vote the same as a no. If a bill receives 29 votes, but the rest of the senators vote “present,” it fails.

In Congress, in contrast, a bill can pass in either the House or the Senate as long as more people vote for it than against it. If 10 people vote in favor and nine against, and the rest either vote “present” or don’t vote at all, the bill passes. It can actually pass with just one vote, as long as no one votes no.

In the Illinois Senate, there can be strategic reasons for voting “present” rather than simply no. A member might approve the intent of legislation, but not its scope or the way it has been drafted. A “present” vote can send a signal to a bill’s sponsors that the legislator might support an amended version. Voting “present” can also be a way to exercise fiscal restraint, without opposing the subject of the bill.”

“Right on!

This Obama guy -- he thinks too much. He actually gets the facts, thinks about them, considers alternatives, seeks input from people who are specialists in each subject, weights their opinions . . . . . . And THEN he wastes time by thinking beyond "OK, I'll do this tomorrow," to ponder what will happen in three months, six months, three years.

Gosh, give me the days of Cowboy Bush who could make a decision in five minutes (first he had to find the coin, then flip it best 3 out of 5) and just send us off to war with no rationale, or let New Orleans drown, or whatever. THAT man was decisive. I mean if his decisions were almost all wrong, and led to the downfall of the economy, and wars in two countries that are draining our treasury . . . . well gosh darned it all and heck, at least he was DECISIVE.”

AnotherAngle replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 15:53:28

“Your logic is as circular as your reasoning is specious.

So athletes EARN their money, but a firefighter or a teacher does not earn their salary? The people who save your life or teach your children are your servants . . . . . but those who go out and hit a small ball with a bat or a club are somehow more important in terms of your entertainment? My my, what a truly bizarre life you must lead. You'd rather be entertained by some jock who may or may not have bothered to complete college or high school, who may or may not be using illegal drugs . . . . than to have decent schooling for kids in your town, or a police force to protect you.

But setting aside public SERVANTS -- you neglected to talk about people who run America's businesses, large and small. They are not SERVANTS, but their salaries will never approach that of some hot shot pro athlete. So how do you justify that? The people who make products and provide services and run those companies -- guess they're not as important to you as entertainers, from Oprah to Tom Cruise to pro athletes.

"If you want to be rich, start your own business." THAT is a truly classic line -- and I'm sure every small business owner who went to college, works 560+ hours a week, has no health insurance, and is just staying afloat, is getting a huge laugh, or shaking”

Devils Advocate replied on Nov 29, 2009 at 06:25:15

“If you want cops to make one million a year, fine. Just pressure your local governments to finance it, which means hiking your property taxes and sales taxes to pay for it.

When athletes make obscene amounts of cash, it's because people pay $250 for a nosebleed seat at their games to see them. They pay $300 for their sneakers. They pay $500 for their jerseys.

Last time I checked, this is America. If I sell you a box of pencils and you pay $1,000 for it, it's my fault I'm making all that money? You're not coereced. You haven't bee lied to or duped. I don't care who uses performance enhancing drugs in sports no more than I care what Hollywood stars snort cocaine. Why the double standard? I tell you why:

The anger towards athletes being rich is rooted in bigotry. Thinly veiled bigotry. Young BLACK MEN are making a fortune doing something you can't dream of doing and you hate it. Meanwhile, Madonna makes crazy for entertaining, as does Oprah. I don't like either, but it's their money. They earned. So be it. But I don't see you posting about Oprah's $50 million a year.

Double standard. AGAIN”

“OH COME NOW -- this is the USA, where athletes get paid more than teachers, fire fighters, the president of the United States, senators, CEOs, and just about everyone else.

it's not that the RICH are different -- it's that we give athletes free passes.”

Devils Advocate replied on Nov 28, 2009 at 20:37:41

“KathyinCt, athletes are paid that much dough because they EARN it. Stop being a hater. And the white man who signs their paycheck makes more than all of them combined. Why don't you rage against them?

Police, teachers and firefighters are PUBLIC SERVANTS. Athletes are entertainers. Do you complain when an actor is paid $20 million for making a movie? Probably not. That movie generates $200 million in profit, it's a small sum and the guys behind the camera are the ones really getting paid.

If you want to be rich, start your own business, be a pro athlete. But people who go into public service jobs don't do so for wealth. The argument you make is lame and shows a lack of understanding basic supply and demand.”

Congress of the past had to wrestle with serious stuff.

And today, it's just silly bunny stuff like the worst economy since 1932 (that was the great depression), and TWO wars (Afghanistan AND Iraq) and hate crimes.

Oh, and poverty -- that's right, we have no poverty now. Heck no -- that report that said more Americans today have difficulty getting enough to eat, well that was just a silly old report. And more people homeless. But that's not poverty, it's . . . . . . well, smart guy, what IS it?

And health care -- you are SO right, it is SO NOT serious. Companies are going bankrupt or sending jobs overseas because of what they have to pay for employee healthcare. More babies in the U.S. die as infants than any other civilized country and some that aren't very civilized. And people without health insurance are DYING every day. IF by "Main Street" you mean the money did not go directly into the hands of "the people" -- well duh. Unless you are suggesting that sending all Americans a check for $126 will be helpful to them in the long term. Sure, they could use if to pay a bill or two, but then what?

If by Main Street you mean employers who are not on Wall Street -- well READ THE STORY AGAIN.

The 30 "organizations" were at a JOB FAIR. The "organizations" whom you complain about "getting the money" are EMPLOYERS.

Get it? They were their interviewing people to HIRE.

OBAMA HAS THE RIGHT PRIORITY -- he had to start with health care because it's the toughest and thorniest issue.

AND it has a huge huge impact on the ECONOMY. If we can bring down healthcare costs for companies, they can invest in tech and create jobs.

So that's why he started with healthcare and it is 100% sensible and sane. It saves lives, ends suffering, promotes health -- and SAVES MONEY for businesses, who can create jobs.

He had to set priorities. He did it exactly right.

Health care reform is happening, now he can, will and IS moving forward on other fronts.”
