Americans Can't Even Stomach An Apology For Slavery, Much Less Reparations

Americans Can't Even Stomach An Apology For Slavery, Much Less Reparations

“umm.. they have an African slave burial site in lower Manhattan, New York. There is an African American museum built on top of their remains to memorialize their life and struggle. The bones were discovered in 1991 when they were preparing for construction. Those bones were hardcore evidence of slavery existing in New York city...by the way...which is up north.”

“Though I support reparations for African-American's, I am afraid that it will, on the other hand, be squandered (in most cases) rather than invested. You're right, it takes education - not just book smarts, but enlightenment and love for self and the community. But, I still support it, nevertheless.”

“The majority of African's came here against their will as slaves. They were stripped of everything. Their family ties, locally and nationally, were severed. 400 years of this continued. What were they suppose to do - then and now? Beside killing off the Native Indians as European's #1 offense, slavery, subsequently was #2. European forefathers and/or ancestors were the main players behind all corrupted acts for the advancement of their own kind since landing foot on this soil. THAT is the larger reality and continues to be so. Why shouldn't they pay up?”

Stewww on Jun 4, 2014 at 12:58:29

“The larger reality - which you ignore - is that the majority of Africans who came here against their will were captured and sold into slavery BY OTHER AFRICANS, NOT by Europeans.”

“It's been done. Plenty of AA's (my family, included) has traced our roots back to the exact plantation (slave master's name and everything) which our descendents have labored. And there have been plenty of AA's that can trace back to their tribal roots prior slavery. Its been done. We can prove our heritage only when time and/or money is no object. But if all it takes is for us to do that in order to receive reparations (which, sadly only in a perfect world), I'm sure there would be a whole bunch of us ready to do what it takes.”

“You say "Do it for all or do it for none." Okay, so some groups and/or ethnicities have received reparations in the past. Blacks still have not.... Then you say "But I see no reason that LJ or BC should get a check." Directing back to you "all or none" statement.... Hypocritical much?”

jponeal on May 31, 2014 at 18:35:29

“Perhaps I needed more clarification for your liking...somebody that is over a certain net worth has no need for any assistance, financially or otherwise. Yes, some groups have received reparations. Certainly to the extent that most of those receiving the compensation were the same generation violated or once removed. Or in the case of Native Americans had to be an acknowledged member of the tribe. Would you suggest that every black American would need to prove their heritage?”

Nicole on May 31, 2014 at 21:57:29

“Where did I say that? Right, I didn't. I simply said that a huge number of groups have been horrendously discriminated against and if we give reparations to black people we need to give reparations to every group that was discriminated against. But reparations will not fix the issue - it will only make it far, far worse.”

But because we can't "change" minds, we could "train minds" by combating institutional racism, first. But, I agree overall.”

“A couple of years ago my son's pre-K program (charter school, that is..) tried to get me and his father to test our son for ADHD, and even Aspergers. We rejected their analysis, the psychiatrist whom we took him to see said there was absolutely nothing wrong with him, and as his parents, all we've done, and continue to do is give him attention, let him be curious and an active kid, and watch his diet. He's now going on 7 and no complaints about his behavior or work ethic in school. His report card is excellent. The teachers love him. No drugs. Simple.”
