“Haha. Fun article, Chris. I'm sure Dede is crying huge tears that she didn't receive the Palin touch. I'll ask her if she swings by the office one of these days. (I work at a paper owned by the Watertown Daily Times, the Daily Courier-Observer)
I would hazard a guess there are collectively more people paying attention to this race and special election outside the district than there are right here inside the 23rd. We're all rather fatigued with the onslaught of outside-financed commercials playing big city mudslinging games while the populace of this rural North Country is concerned with much higher than average joblessness, the departure of once major employers (e.g. GM) and the economic suffering of our dairy farmers. Big party partisanship and an endless flow of negative TV commercials is a big turn-off here.
Siena college polls have demonstrated what Hoffman's wonderful pals are doing for his campaign. Nothing positive, obviously, as he trails behind in third. http://www .siena.edu /pages/116 7.asp
Fat cats, pundits and party has-beens from D.C. and points much farther north can endorse all they want but none of them can vote come Nov. 3 for their chosen candidate.”

Arianna Debates New Media With AP CEO Tom Curley On "Charlie Rose"
Commented Apr 09, 2009 at 06:56:17 in Media
“On the net, the AP is nothing unless its content is linked to/repeated. The bitter truth: A website doesn't need the AP to be a news website.
They should've established for themselves a user-friendly website with their own content a decade ago, an ad-supported at that (esp. if a subscriber access model didn't work out).
They must do a volume business. AP content must be cheap to provide and to carry. I can read a story from a newspaper in India for free. Why do I need the AP again?
By Curley's example, I should bill the AP if they ever want to quote me or write about me. Otherwise they're robbing me. Maybe I will let them link to my quote for a fee. But will they then do so? Of course not. There are more people to interview for free.
In the last year or so, some newspapers have rebelled against AP price increases for subscriber s/members. They drop the AP and refocus on local content. That is no surprise as tough times stress newspaper budgets more each month.
The Internet and e-mail connections to other newspapers and reporters across the globe creates a massive alternative to the AP's implied exclusivity. The AP has yet to respond adequately to that. Instead they react like Gollum, crying "My precious!" about their content, drawing it ever closer to themselves but losing their grip by doing so.
Would you even notice if HuffPo dropped AP content?”

“You are kidding, right?
Perhaps all these 'link-economists' should think, for one second, what would happen if HuffPo and all the aggregators were forced to drop AP and every other old-media content provider. Even Google, for that matter. What would you get back when you Googled "Iraq War" or "George Clooney" and Google was prohibited from linking to any old-media news site. You'd get a bunch of blogs and opinion pieces (most commenting on news stories themselves) and Google would become useless, overnight. OVERNIGHT.
Let's keep in mind something here folks. HuffPo is the most successful aggregator on the Internet. So much so that they've begun to generate their own content, which is great. But take away their links to the old-world media and this site becomes a collection of Alec Baldwin and Bob Cesca opinion pieces commenting on news pieces that they wouldn't be permitted to link to. HuffPo becomes a shell of itself, overnight.
Everyone yelling "It's a link economy!" seems to have forgotten that there has to be something to LINK to. Google creates NOTHING. You still have to have content, and for better or for worse, that heavy lifting is still done by the old world media. And by that I mean newspapers and magazines, not television (just see what happens to TV content when newspapers disappear-- you think it's a coincidence the nightly news programs and all the cable news channels rip almost every story from that morning's NY Times?).”

“Sadly, with the advance notice, many terrorist groups will place women and children right in harm's way for the sake of creating martyrs and to fuel cries of victimization. They want horrible photos to show to demonize their enemy.
A military/terrorist group that hides out amongst its people, therefore endangering them obviously doesn't give a crap what happens. It's about fueling the "holy" struggle because that's the only way they can maintain power over the populace. Peace puts them out of power. It's not a strategy unique to Hamas and sadly some Palestinians seem to put up with it or are unfortunately powerless for many reasons to escape their political/ racial/mil itary confines.
Let's hope civilian casualties are as few as possible on both sides through this repeated ordeal.”

“I love Tara more each time she posts! Witty beauty.
Yoga is witchcraft! If practiced, yoga will turn you into a Hindu, you'll grow extra arms, be reincarnated and eventually burn in hell!
But not if you call it relaxation instead of yoga. Then it's okay. Wish I was joking about that. Local school (Massena Central School, NY) had to back off a bit on yoga due to oh-so-concerned Baptists who, get this, opposed it on the grounds it would violate sep. of church and state... all the while bemoaning the secular celebration of Easter, X-mas etc. in classrooms. *slams head on desk* It's like Palin country.
Current resolution may involve making yoga a club activity at the school and if it does feature in class/p.e. , it won't be called yoga. *sigh*
Local nutjobs also founded their objections on the fact that two teachers asked for funding to attend training to teach yoga... training from a group advocating the spiritual possibilities and mystic explorations of yoga.
Shouldn't math instruction also stop due to its Arabic origins?”

Yoga Highs And Lows: What's With All The Competition?
Commented Sep 13, 2008 at 12:22:07 in Living
“Yes. The variety of 'wacky' or unusual names associated with yoga has always been a bit off-putting and obnoxious. Some instructors, advocates and practitioners seem to relish their inner-circle speak and secret code words.
Yoga, like tai chi, is so democratic and egalitarian that any one-upsmanship through vocabulary or overt declaration of skill level is rather counter to the basic tenets of the activity itself.
I'm a beginner but isn't that how one should always consider oneself no matter how long they've been practicing? There's no finish line.
Nice piece, Tara. I really appreciate your videos.”
