Maurice Clemmons: Mental Illness Does Cause Violence
Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 16:55:57 in Living
“I don't want to return to the days when people were routinely consigned to mental institutions and were unable to leave even if they could have lived independently or in an assisted-living facility. There should be more effective community support, but there also should be an increase in the number of beds available in long-term care facilities.”

“I also want to add that Paul was finally placed in a long-term care facility a year before he died. Why? Because he had emphysema so bad he was having recurring bouts of pneumonia. We found out months later that the real cause was lung cancer. He was only 48 when he died. I now have to celebrate our 50th birthday without my twin.
To think that his emphysema, not his schizophrenia, qualified him for Medicaid is criminal. It took a deathly illness to get him the care he needed.
At least he died in a place that cared about him as a person first, who happened to be mentally ill. I am very grateful for that.
Please support H.R. 619 which would repeal the IMD Exclusion.”

“I somehow doubt the UCMJ is enlightened enough to recognize the difference between a man and a transwoman, and I don't blame Winchell for not caring to find out the hard way how his commanders would react to his reporting "I'm being harassed because I'm in a relationship with someone who was born a man."”

“It may not have back then but it certainly does now.
As long as he didn't say that he gay, he'd be in the clear. The first part of the policy is "don't ask". Now if he let it be known to his room mate (and I don't know how his room mate discovered it, or even if he did) then he violated the second part of the phrase and, in effect, didn't live up to his part of the bargain.”

No, Gay Soldiers Won't Be Allowed to Cross-dress While on Duty
Commented Mar 19, 2009 at 11:19:13 in Politics
“I really can't fathom why people keep bringing up this point as though it's persuasive. I've rarely heard gay or straight people discuss their sexual activities at work, but people discuss their romantic, social and family lives all the damned time. Unless your workplace requires a vow of silence or you work exclusively alone, there's no way to avoid hearing about what people and their spouses did over the weekend or whose kids are selling cookies or where people went out for drinks.”

I really regret that I was not more prepared for college, but I still believe that I got a great deal out of my education in the liberal arts.”

“They don't come here legally because the legal immigration process is expensive, long and difficult for most people.
If your only goal is to make money to support your family back home, and you don't particularly want to vote or serve on a jury in the US, it's better for you to either slip across the border or overstay a tourist visa than go through the legal process. Ironically enough, the new border security measures are encouraging illegal aliens to stay put in the US because they can't be sure if they can return to the US if they leave.
If you're actually willing to do something about those dreaded illegal aliens other than blather on a message board, start lobbying for guest-worker measures that would allow workers to come in and do the jobs Americans don't want to do but make sure they leave and don't bring their families.”
