Media Blow 'Boy in Balloon' Story
Commented Oct 16, 2009 at 07:04:19 in Media
“The "Balloon Boy" story more and more looks outstandingly fishy. In addition, there are some fundamental questions that the air head media seems reluctant to ask. Since I am a taxpayer and some of public resources were used in this episode, I would like the following answers: Why didn't the parents and local law enforcement do a complete search of their house when the boy went missing? What does Mr. Heene do for living? Storm chasing is a hobby and their is no payments made (As a former director of the National Weather Service Southern Region, I have participated in storm chasing and helped coordinate many storm chases in Texas, Oklahoma and surrounding states). Did the Media get sucked in again and now is afraid to know the truth? Bob Landis”

“The opposition to health care reform is harping on that old cliche about bad government!
I have as yet to join with the Democrats, even though I agreed with most of their positions philosophically. In 2004 I was invited to attend a progressive workshop in Washington, largely sponsored by Move-on. During several discussions, I commented to several of the top Democratic strategists and campaign leaders that the party’s continuted slamming of the governement would come back to haunt them. Most all of them thought I was crazy. Recall, Jimmy Carter, who I like from many aspects, raised this to a new level when he ran for and became President (A major short sighted gain, in my estimation that lost him a second term and added to the government myth). How can you believe in Democracy where the people you elect are YOUR voters on issues and then use government as a whipping boy? We are the government. Everytime somebody says something referring to the government, there is a need to substitute the word we or us etc. Then it will have real meaning. Frankly I would rather have Us decide than the corporate executives and boards of Corporations, that have only one goal—make money. Which in many cases conflicts with a priority of Public Welfare! So Democrats, its time to profess the virtues of us/ we over Corporate execs and sapping profits in deciding what is good for us. Get it!”

“That is such a great comment and great observation. We've all forgotten that the government is "WE THE PEOPLE".
Of course, crooked politicians have made us cynical, but if even a quarter of the population would put down their Fantasy Football sheets and look at the pols in their districts, maybe we could reclaim what was originally ours and begin to put things back on the right track.
When a country starts to look at its government as "us against them", its days are surely numbered.”

“I am fairly progressive with respect to my views on most subjects. It is usually difficult for me to find anything redeeming fro the Right Wing-nuts (e.g. Birthers, Teabaggers, Palinites, etc.); However, the recent demonstration in Washington of Saturday (9/12) did make me think that the point dealing with being fed-up with Washington is a good one. Listen up Liberals. Why do we still get Pork? Why no regulation of Banks and Wall Street? Why are a bunch of Congressmen and Senators on the take from the Health Insurance and Drug industry determining our health care policy and program? What ever happen to accountability for committing crime while in public Office? Are a few low ranking women in the Military following orders the best you can do? Why do we need THREE auto manufacturers? Here I do trust capitalism to weed out chaff from the wheat. Why can't we have decent public transportation as a first start to global warming? OK Democrats get your party in order and recognize that you are not much different than the RightWing Nuts (or Tips) unless you quit talking and really gives us change!”

“All true.
Would that the minority party would express these views as rationally as you have.
Instead they have supported, even embraced, the fringe of politics and have chosen
to incite the ignorant and biased to the very edge of violence.
The only rational dispute with this administration, or for that matter the status-quo,
bought and sold nature of our Congress, has come from the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
If I find any fault in your message, it is the implied assumption that there is a cohesive Democratic Party at all. Baucus, and Dodd, Carper and Landrieu, and the rest of the DLC corporate run puppets, might as well belong to another party entirely.”

“After a really pathetic performance by the CEOs of the Auto Industry (re: Seante Banking Committee) where they could not agree on how they decided on $25B sellout, could not say how they would become profitable, and still wanted to keep their 7 digit salaries; my position is easy!
I do not favor an overall bailout to the auto industry. We do not need 3 losers. Force the three companies to look at some form of merger (perhaps even bankruptcy restructure)into one "good" US company that can compete with the "foreign" automakers. We need just one good US small pickup, one good US hybrid... Limit Excutive and Union salaries until a profit is shown. Provide public funds to sustain workers that lose jobs and retrain them to be productive workers in building our infrastructure and in emerging green industries.”

“It is time to realize that one of the major ploys of the McCain/Palin/NRC campaign is to belittle the asset of intelligence and education. The attack, meant for the blue collar vote, is to paint people as elitists because they can deal in facts and comprehensive logic; as well as communicate verbally and on paper using proper English language grammar. (Or is it that the Republican Candidates do not possess these skills?) The most recent attack on Barak’s association with Rashid Khalidi, a Palestinian scholar and professor at the University of Chicago and Columbia, is just one example. Similar snide comments attack Barak’s education at Harvard and other Universities where his performance should be the desire for every parent’s child. The overall character performance by Gov. Palin has played up to ignorance, including her butchering of the language and non participation in news shows. I believe this is just a continuation of the Rove/Cheney policies under Bush. Knowledge, intelligence and communication skills are some of the most important attributes needed if we want to reach out and solve problems, particularly where opposing views are so divergent. Remember that intelligence, education and learning were some of the first things suppressed under the despotic leaders of Germany, the USSR, and China. Did you know that Sarah! Bob Landis”

“Not making education accessible has also suppressed many black people in this country, and still does today. There's a reason slaves were forbidden to learn to read, and it's simple fact that knowledge is power. When you know better, you can do better.”
Palin on SNL: What Did You Expect?

“I agree SNL is not the forum we should be looking at for anything except great comedy. However, I am frustrated. Once again, I must wonder at the actions of the media, primarily the broadcast media. Most every candidate running for public office, including those for President and Vice President -- Obama, McCain, PALIN and Biden, have been given FREE broadcast spots of the their daily campaign speeches. Like most people, since I do not have access to candidates seeking votes, I rely on the media to react to statements by the candidates by asking penetrating questions to show hypocrisy, lies, out-of context statements, etc. So I askWhy is it that Obama and Biden must answer for their statements and not Palin. If the broadcast media was truly fair, Palin would not get one second of speech air time, until she stood for a reasonable Question and Answer period including appearing on the Sunday news programs. What is wrong with you CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS? (No those scripted interviews with Gibson and Couric do not count). Spineless Democrats, national Bloggers, and other Pundits you need to speak on this issue. Bob Landis”

“I believe some of the best women reporters are stretching alittle to get an interview with Palin. Amanpour ( also Mika Brezinski, and the ODonnnell sisters) is certainly one of the best, and one of my favorites, but I agree with your analysis. Here is another thought: It is time for the Media to stand-up to the Palin BLOCK. The Media has an obligation, it uses many of our public resources ( e.g. Frequency spectra, public right-of ways, …), to try and provide facts and the opinions of public candidates running for office. Most of the Mainline Media is frustrated because of Palin’s refusal to stand for questions. As a result Joe Biden, often, does not get the exposure he deserves. Why doesn’t the media invite both VP candidates to more interviews and on-air news shows. If Palin doesn’t participate, then free air time for Biden. Obama and Biden have nothing to hide. Let’s show Palin for the NO_SHOW she is! Bob Landis”

“PART 2
A corporate press always goes easier on the candidates that further their agendas , once elected, regulations are relaxed and oversight is eliminated.
We watch Wolf Blitzer squirm uncomfortably after Jack Cafferty uses his two minutes of airtime a day to try to wake the public up out of their stupor!
Lou Dobbs get an hour a day to whip up the angry mob?
MSNBC? they have determined that rather than lose viewers by trying to be a clone of CNN or FOX their only chance is to try for a segment of the audience that is under-served. In 2003, they fired Phil Donahue, the highest rated show on cable at the time, because he had the temerity to doubt that Bush was telling the truth and say it publically. But they're present programming decisions are borne out of corporate calculations, not sincerely held political philosophy.
I live in the largest media market in the world in a blue city, in a blue state, and 99% of what's on the non-music radio is right wing. One low watt station carries a mix of air america and randi and stephanie, often pre-empted by sporting events and hours of info-mercials.
30 years of this has rendered the american public incapable of rational, logical thought.
And so, instead of Obama being ahead by 50 points, and impeachment being On The Table, we are argiung over who won a debate between a statesmen and a beauty pageant contestant.”

I am flabbergasted at how the media seems to think its all ok to use expectations as the grade on whether someone has the base understanding, knowledge, and judgment to be a heart beat away from the most powerful position in the world. What is worse, is the number of the public who are buying in on this farce. Folks just because we like a person who is folksy and who might be a delight at a Bar B Q, doesn’t mean that the person is ready to be VP. Given the most dire of situations in the economy, foreign policy, health care, and education; Think about Sarah Palin leading the charge? “It’s time to employ some new tactics if we want to WIN in November. First, Obama and the campaign must bring up, at least every day, a major blunder from the Bush years and point out it is a result of a policy that McCain endorses. Come on, we have the economy, disaster assistance (including FEMA in Homeland Security!), education costs, Iraq and WMD, Intelligence, health insurance, Supreme Court appointments, climate warming, ...) Second, we need more support from surrogates. Some need to be nasty and use half truths like Rick Davis others need to focus on sectors of the electorate. For Example, where are all the very talented Demoratic female legislators and executives? Without personal attacks on Palin, they should speak as a grroup to policies of McCain/Palin that will effect women, mothers, daughters, sisters. Women want to hear from other Women they respect. Please Hilary, Amy, Claire, Patty, Diane, Barbara, Janet, Debbie, Jeanne, Nancy, Katherine, and others we need you to come together and SPEAK. NOW! “I am concerned that the non-attack Democratic Party strategy that lost the Kerry election is now the policy of the Obama-Biden election. Its time to go after the GOP and the failed policies -Never got my trickle-down. Its time to beat down this stupid one-line logic about Sarah Palin’s experience, along with her many public lies. I would rather go down with a fight rather than get ridiculed into submission. The McCain campaign has told the media to go to hell with respect to interviewing Palin. Democrats should hop on that. As a citizen voter, I feel I have a right to know what candidates think, and how they react to questions. Lets get off this jerkamamie one line executive experience and who has stood-up against your party kick. Its time to convince people, that understanding and IN DEPTH KNOWLEDGE are what allows for good judgment. Candidates need to show this wide understanding and knowledge by answering questions. Why doesn’t the Obama campaign show the amount of federal earmark funding given to Governor, I’m against earmark but ok with my lobbyists, Palin’s home town. Then contrast it with all the small towns (less than 10K population) in PA, OH, MO, NJ, WV, etc where working people have to pay a state income tax and get no state help from Oil royalties -- every person in Alaska gets a Oil payoff gift of 2-3K dollars every year. “The ABC debate from Philadelphia was a real hack job, and as a dedicated viewer of “This Week” and “World News”, I am pulling the switch. George Stephanopolous apparently never left the Clinton payroll. He and Gibson for nearly an hour rehashed stupid air-headed questions that are unimportant to selecting a President. What’s more, most of their slams were one-sided against Obama. Count the questions, look at the time. Yes Charley that’s why you got behind in your allocated time to Hillary. The question on Ayers to Obama was a real sophomoric performance by Stephanopolous, who caved to the right wing and rehashed some old gossip. The question would have made HALF sense if the relevance was explained. Do Presidential Candidates have to dump every they know if that person has made a mistake? Even if the Candidate rejects that mistake? The allocation that Obama sat on a Board for a CHARITY event with someone who made a mistake is not a Gaffe, What was that CHARITY event for? Important information I think if you want to raise such a stupid question. When the George and Charley debacle finely got to some substance, and Hillary suggests Massive retaliation on Iran, there is not follow-up. She is suggesting a Major foreign policy change, and a bellicose one at that. Who in the media has the cahunas to lead in trying to get information to the public? And, to lead fairly rather than wiping the bottom? Bob Landis”
