That's what Republicans need to ask themselves. Thatcher sought to deny the IRA a propaganda advantage by NOT recognizing their acts as political in nature. It was the pillar of her approach:

The Bush Administration (and those trying to rewrite its legacy of failure) shortsightedly forfeited this strategic advantage.

The President can't make this argument, but white men like me can. Why other white, male Democrats can't see that it is WE who must cover the President's back on this one is beyond me.
