A Letter From Roman Polanski

Commented Dec 27, 2009 at 23:04:31 in Entertainment

“Defending Polanski is equal to the Catholic Church covering for their abusive priests. For shame.”

trippingrady replied on Dec 28, 2009 at 00:45:30

“No, it is not equal. The Catholic Church's defense is also about hypocrisy and corruption, the use of parishioner's money to commit those acts, and also sublimating rape. Defending Polanski could come from a lot of different things including questioning whether or not the justice system that is gunning for him is doing so at the cost of civil liberties. No one who is a credible human being is saying rape is ok, but defending civil rights is now the same as defending rape.”

MTV Pressured To Cancel "Jersey Shore" By NJ Lawmakers

Commented Dec 24, 2009 at 10:11:31 in Media

“BET is owned and run by African-Americans. No one is complaining. Why are you even bringing that up?

Italian-Americans do not run MTV and if they are offended by the stereotypes on the show they have a right to complain.”

davidariley replied on Dec 25, 2009 at 16:54:11

“#1. bet is NOT owned by african-americans. bob johnson sold it YEARS ago, to viacom - the same company that owns mtv.

#2. bet;s programming has been the subject of complaints and actions for YEARS within the black community.

#.3. i'm pretty sure there are italian-americans in leadership positions at mtv/viacom who greenlighted this project.

#4. if we don't have the right to complain about how we're portrayed in the mass media, why do they?”

as1504 replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 15:02:56

“Fail! BET is owned wholly by Viacom, not African-Americans. BET and VH1 go for the lowest common denominator when it comes to showing AAs and I have not heard these law makers calling for them to end. It seems like they are cherry picking. Who can say that Flavor-Flav is not a walking, talking caricature of AAs? I dislike politicians leveraging their offices to influence what is in the media, no matter how offensive. It is wading into 1st Amendment territory and we have already had our civil liberties legislated away by FISA, the Patriot Act, or an outright refusal to enforce the laws against government agents who violate the rights of the people. This is just another sign that politicians know they can trample on our rights under the guise of doing the right thing and we won't make a peep. These 8 people, all of whom are over 21 (most of them are close to 30), are far less dangerous than these politicians.”

“Only Fox "News" gets to tell Americans they have a right to be angry otherwise it must be dismissed as elite liberal media bias. LOL.”

Godweiser replied on Dec 24, 2009 at 10:15:48

“Fox News is the outgrowth of what Cheney's staffer once said about inventing a new reality. Republicans apparently can't handle the real world so they have to take refuge in an idealized version where they're always right and everyone else is wrong (and intends to be wrong, takes a peverse pride in being wrong. As in, they're willfully wrong.)

It points to a severe and fundamental character flaw. Look at most of their leaders...these guys are in the Nixon mold; they came up with a chip on their shoulders and it's overcome them.”

The Most Important Book Every Man Should Read

Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 23:37:55 in Books

“This is a great article with wonderful reading suggestions. I'm always grateful when I read enlighted articles and comments about women's issues. The comments made about women on the Huffington Post can be disheartening at times. Last week a poster equated a woman on a reality tv show getting sucker punched in the face by a guy with equality.

I just wanted to add that I hope the author and other people reading it keep in mind that the problems outlined above also exist in the US and the West in general. It shouldn't be discussed in terms of developing nations only. The sex trade is everywhere. 1 out of 5 women in the US can't read or write. The same issues that plague the developing world exist in our inner cities and rural communities. The attacks on reproductive rights are a dangerous sign of backsliding on human rights.”

2010 Prediction: Women Will Have Another Horrible Decade

Commented Dec 23, 2009 at 09:35:31 in World

“Its not just religion driving the anti-woman hatred around the globe. The more the planet buckles under the weight of global warming, the more resources become scarce, the more women will be brutalized.”

terramartom replied on Dec 23, 2009 at 09:49:00

“What it really comes down to is over population of Humanity.
As you point out, resource scarcity exacerbated by the number of Humans swelling out of control. Yet religion is the main resistance because of it's anti - birth control platform
No matter what Humanity does, unless Humanities number reverse and diminish it is simply inevitable that there will be too many people, using too much of everything, depleting everything as well.
Understand that the Ten commandments are not rules for everyone, they are " Property" rights of a man!
There is nothing there that says, protect Women and children!
Women and children are not even mentioned!”

The Real Story Behind Obama's Copenhagen Deal

Commented Dec 20, 2009 at 12:41:48 in Green

“I see both the mediocre climate change deal and mediocre healthcare bill as one in the same. The dysfunction and half a$$ed solutions in Washington mainfested itself in Copenhagen. The middle of the road ways of Obama in this crisis era will slowly kill this nation and planet. We need bold action, which means ignoring the socio-paths who benefit from the current world economy.”

dc2nm replied on Dec 20, 2009 at 13:28:42

“I agree. Obama can't legally take any action on his own. He needs support from congress to make any agreement binding. Unfortunately, there are still too many obstructionists bought out by corporate lobbyists. We still have a lot of work ahead of us because this is not just Obama's fight, it is our fight.”

Left/Right Populist Outrage Will Defeat Senate Health Care Bill

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 17:53:30 in Politics

“I agree for the most part about racism as one of motivating factor behind the tea baggers, but we on the left can not ignore that the rage that all sides feel towards the banks, and the Fed. The tea baggers are wrong on many issues. They are easily being mainpulated by the insurance industry against healthcare, but the one area they have always been right about is the incestous relationship between Wall Street and DC. That is going to be the achilles heel for the Dems and Obama. We can't ignore this reality.

Perhaps we need a 3rd and 4th party movement in this country from the left and right to get both major political parties out of their corrupt stupors. They need to be shaken to the core.”

Minks09 replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 22:03:26

"Onward Christian Athletes": Tom Krattenmaker's Book Explores Evangelical Monopoly In Sports World

Commented Dec 19, 2009 at 12:21:42 in Books

“The open display of Christian beliefs and prayer at a public event is against Jesus's teachings. Jesus said pray in a closet. Jesus understood that your relationship with god is a personal matter. He understood people who wear their religion on their sleeves are the biggest hypocrites.”

Mosby12 replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 13:42:49

Matthew was warning against prayer that was mean to build up the prayer in the eyes of those around him.. just the opposite here were athletes quietly ask for strenght, courage and honorable victory.”

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 18:10:38 in Politics

“I would say that is true for climate change on the international side. Healthcare in terms of domestic policy.

Healthcare is the last chance Dems have before the majority of Americans give up on our government and become an unruly mob.

I say the progressives should force the "moderates" to compromise, not the other way around. No more compromises with corporate Dems.”

“Santa a red herring? Why do you hate Christmas? Beware of Bill O'Reilly.

But, Virginia, there is no historical evidence that Jesus Christ ever existed.”

daffey replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 09:01:33

“There's no historical evidence that Socrates existed. A thousand years from now, there may be no historical evidence that Martin Luther King existed. If you begin with the belief that the accounts in the New Testament are altogether wrong, then yeah, that's hedging your bet. If you further accept the notion that all accounts that were rejected by the Church were wrong (hence in a weird strange way, the Church was right in those cases), then yeah, the case get better. If you are willing to discard the usual standards for accepting historical accounts, and decide it was all just one, big conspiracy - then yeah, it's sounding pretty air tight. But to do that, again, it would be nothing a thousand years from now to believe that President Obama was a mythical figure invented by people called Americans. And since I know that to be true, no matter what they say a thousand years from now, I'll accept that Jesus lived. Son of God? That's another matter. But lived, yeah, I can handle it.”
