“Typically an insecure person will be a lot more giving in the initial stages of a relationship.
That being the case they will draw a lot of horny guys in. Eventually, that same insecurity becomes a drain on the affair, as the person is constantly trying to get closer to the other adulterer, who presumably wants nothing more than care-free sex.
I know it sounds morally bankrupt, but if a married guy is that much in need of sex with young women, he should probably look into a "professional contractor". Elliot Spitzer was on the right track, but he just screwed up by leaving a paper trail.”

“While I am sure we are all regaled by your attempted sociology lesson, my experience an inner city educational environment says these schools would definitely benefit from increased funding.
To my knowledge, the approach you derided (fully funding schools, and hiring excellent teachers) has a much higher success rate than the alternative.
However, if you think it is a good idea to leave these children; potential solvers of the world's problems ; on the proverbial scrap heap because they chose to be born into an economically disadvantaged situation, I don't know how to respond to that.”

The biggest shame about this whole episode is that some of the children who needed to hear the President's message the most (disadvantaged children of all racial backgrounds) were prevented from hearing the message, because of a group of ideologues who see everything as a political game.
Some issues, like encouraging our nation's youth to excell, should be above this kind of crap”

So We Can't Have Single Payer for Health Care, But How About Single Payer for Education?
Commented Sep 05, 2009 at 13:37:57 in Politics
“I agree. Private schools that cater to inner-city communities have a long history of being nothing more than revenue streams. My hildhood friends who attended Catholic school can attest to that
This idea would also decimate the public school system, even those that are doing well, as their budgets would be slashed to pay for these vouchers.
The problem is not that public education does not work in minority neighborhoods, it is that it has never been adequately funded. Given a level playing field, with proper and funding and guidelines, public schools will produce at a level on par with their surburban counterparts.
The real tragedy of this neglect of lower income education (not just minorities but poor people across the board), is that gifted children in these areas are being thrown on the collective scrap heap. Minds that could potentially solve the worlds problems never make it out of the educational starting gate.
A stipend program like the author suggests does what conservatives always do. It promotes an individual mindset over the collective, which is great if you are the individual in question. Conversely, if you are not one of the lucky few it sucks.”

“I agree. A equal bans for both players would curtail everyone else from any such crap.
I think the current suspension for Blount (1 year) is a little excessive. I would go with 4 games each, but the whole season ban makes a better deterrant.
The problem if you only punish Blount is that other teams will attempt to bait players into retaliating to get a star player kicked out of a game.”

“So you mean to tell us that, in the "backward South" where a large portion of our agricultural base is centered, you don't have access to organic vegetables?
If you really disagree with Mackey's stance start a victory garden in your back yard. shop seasonally at the farmers market, supplement at Trader Joes, find other sources of produce There are also many regional companies that will ship organic produce. It's expensive, but if you regularly shop at WF, price obviously is no object.
There are always alternatives to supporting corporate greed.”

“Yes, that is what I meant to say. Locally grown organic vegetables are not very common here at all. Except for tomatoes, but they are so expensive I can't afford them. I can find corn, green beans and summer squashes, but that's about it locally grown - and it's not organic. And we have apples in the autumn, but I've yet to see any grown here that are organic. I grow my own tomatoes, herbs and peppers organically, and next year I am moving to ten acres and will have a big garden. But even when I have my garden, there are only certain things I will be able to grow - especially in winter. Not everyone lives in California where everything seems to grow year-round. It freezes here in the winter and I will have to shop somewhere for organic produce. We don't have farmer's markets here in winter as there is nothing to sell because it's too cold.
As I said in my previous post, the things I buy at Whole Foods aren't any more expensive than at my regular grocery store and are sometimes even less expensive, so the quip about price being no object was just mean.”

“Good points all. Cilantro has a very short growth cycle, and if you use as much as your post implies, you simply need a small herb planter box to keep you supplied.
Tomatoes are a little harder to grow year round, but if it is really about having good tasty 'maters you don't want industrially grown ones (WF growers use these same practices) because they are picked before they ripen, which makes them bland and tastless.
If you grow your own, you could make and store your own salsa (roasted salsa, not salsa fresca) and have it at the ready all winter long
There are always alternatives to supporting corporate greed.”

I know grapes are grown in California, but are they actually being grown in your area? I don't know about bananas. It's my impression that all or almost all of the bananas we get in the States come from outside, such as Mexico and Central America.
BTW, before somebody jumps on me about Mexico: It is in North America, not Central America, as many people mistakenly believe.”
