“It's inconceivable that killing any nation's civilian population by bombing or other means will go far toward winning that nation's respect and aid in converting its form of government to that of its attacker. Were that the case, then the population of lower Manhattan should by now have set about establishing a hierarchy of Sheiks and have adopted the Salafi form of Islam. Has anyone checked on this?”

“Great Scott! Why is anyone getting all teary-eyed? Oprah is not vanishing. The woman will be on five days a week right where she is, ABC I believe, for nearly the next two years. That's about 460 shows. The entire lifespan of many TV shows is no more than that. And then she'll migrate to her own network or station or whatever she's just bought and be around another 10 years or so.”

fabricnthreads replied on Nov 21, 2009 at 18:50:58

“Boo hooo boooooo hooooooo

My tears are because she will be on for the next two years and then migrating to her own network for a new show.....

She loves it enough to know when to quit, two years from now, and then to just move and start over. Doesn't sound at all like quitting, ever.

Booooo hoooooo boo hooo booo hoooooo.”

G-guy replied on Nov 21, 2009 at 11:24:06

“Truth is, she's announced that she "will leave in two years".
Now, with this strategy, she knows all panicked women will never miss another show,
and wistfully hang on her every uttered words of wisdom and nostalgic tear.

Meanwhile, she will continue to put herself stylishly air-brushed on EVERY cover of her mag.
Continue to employ an editorial staff that tells readers what to do, think and eat each month.

Won't her fans miss the Ads each day, when she exclaims......."ALL NEW", and then gives them
the inside scoop on "following the flush"-where your sewage really goes!" Next Oprah!”
Palin Booed By Book Tour Crowd

Palin Booed By Book Tour Crowd

Commented Nov 21, 2009 at 01:08:57 in Media

“Ms Palin seems only tenuously connected with whatever it is she's doing. She wades in, but if the reality of it becomes inconvenient for her, she will abandon it, as she did the governorship, or fail to prepare, as she did for the debates and interviews during her VP campaign. She wants some sort of fame, but having no particular genius or vocational drive to inform her path, she's left casting about, trying to create the right track. And apparently she's found that the rigors of a book tour don't suit her, either. The missteps and bad PR resulting from her search for public attention may in themselves bring all the fame she can hope for. And it may be all she wants.

And we seem to be cooperating in this. I've been tuning out radio talks shows whose guests preface their remarks by asserting that Ms Palin is not worthy of anyone's attention and who then spend many minutes bringing everyone up to date on her current activities and prognosticating her political intentions.”

“This instance is symptomatic of what can be expected when troops are deployed and placed in harm's way overseas in apparently endless, ill-advised and futile invasions and occupations. Military discipline goes only so far in countering the reality that what's asked of the military has little or nothing to do with "defending my country," but is instead fostering international enmity and increasing the likelihood of attacks within the U.S.”

“Mr Obama's been in office less than a year, and so far his record on peace-making consists in his presiding over the military occupation of two countries and the continuing loss of lives on all sides. Is this what peacemaking is nowadays? If so, George Bush should probably get the prize.

Obama may well become a force for peace, maybe an outstanding one -- but so far, no cigar from me. It seems to me that Nobel prizes are usually, and rightly, awarded for actual accomplishments.”

During WWII, Tarmac -- a trademarked process combining asphalt and gravel -- was used because of wartime shortages. And it's been a long time since I endured a long delay on a runway of any material. “Letterman, O'Brien, et al have become our way to prepare for sleep late in the evening -- something predictable and comfortable -- a little warm milk. When one of them invades prime time, a period when most of us are awake and ready to be engaged with what's onscreen, then a late-night show might not cut it. Here in the central time zone, 9 p.m. seems a bit early to start the late part of the night. It occurs to me that if Leno's new show is being taped in late afternoon, as I believe the previous show was, it's understandable that the show's staff will view it as more of the same and will construct it of the same familiar bits and pieces.”

“I don't know Brian Urlacher nor do I follow da Bears, but observing Mr. Urlacher on the sidelines after his injury, it appeared to me that he is tall and slender, with rather modestly proportioned bone structure who has developed his musculature in the gymn. This is great for his general conditioning, but it doesn't give him the substantial bones and joints he really needs to survive the blows he wants to inflict on opposing ball-carriers. A person's skeleton is first and foremost a product of genetics, and no amount of muscle-building can change that.”

“To those who say "follow the money," in pooh-poohing the idea of climate-change causing any problems I would point to T. Boone Pickens, who has a lot of money and is investing heavily in water resources. He knows that water is more essential than petroleum and that it's getting scarce in many areas.

I expect climate change aided or caused by human pollution to necessitate wrenching changes in lifestyle if homo sapiens is to survive at all comfortably on this planet. We can't crap in our nest indefinitely with no consequences. But of course, it is not written in stone that homo sapiens must survive. We are, after all, totally insignificant in the universe.”

First you write that "this" will teach Mackey to keep his mouth shut and etc. "This" I assume refers to the union's objecting to his remarks. And I also assume you think Mackey should keep mum, and that suggests that may you disagree with what Mackey said. If so, why continue to shop in his stores? But then, maybe you don't disagree.

But I'm fairly sure you said Mackey should not try to influence what legislators do and then, later, said YOU plan to gripe to your legislator as appropriate. Is this a different standard for you and Mackey? Or are you hoping your legislator will ignore you?”

“The problem for shoppers is that Mackey's regressiveness is probably echoed by all the big retailers. They just don't write about it so blatantly, and in the WSJ.

I also recall that a number of years ago, Whole Foods was collecting signatures on petitions objecting to the FDA proposing to regulate over-the-counter nostrums and vitamins and minerals. Of course, there are no objective standards for a lot of that stuff, which may not contain the amount of active ingredient claimed on the label.”

ladydragon replied on Aug 27, 2009 at 08:22:15

“why are you trying to twist what I said? I meant that Macey has every right to disagree with Obama's Health Care Reform proposals and he is free to shout his belief into a bullhorn, but when you own a business like Whole Foods where Unions and others have an interest you run the risk of ticking people off; the public may misunderstand what you are saying just like you did by trying to twist what I posted. and btw one of my legislator's office is in the town where I live he will hear from me if he makes a decision I don't agree with. We voted Kathleen Kennedy Townsend out of office for not doing what her constituents asked her to do. what have YOU done lately?”

“Lemastre,

No one has said Mackey should be "forced" to stay quiet. Mackey has every right to oppose Obama's Health Care plan .... no one has said Mackey does not have that right.

BUT, BUT, BUT ... as a FORMER Whole Foods shopper - I, too, have the right to STOP buying goods from a person's store whom I disagree with on any grounds - including, but not limited to, political grounds .... That's MY right.

As Ms. Parker said, no it is time for Mackey to get a NEW clientele - her "capitalist friends" because his former clientele are exercising THEIR RIGHTS to shop else where.”
