“The winner with 19 doughnuts......not to mention slugging them back with high sugar juice drinks ...I have to wonder what that translates to in teaspoons of sugar---guessing maybe 75+ teaspoons at the low end?
And while we all love a doughnut on occasion ..
In the United States we have escalating incidences of obesity, diabetes and heart disease ..costing Americans into the billions annually.
And so much of this preventable.
If we as a country are ever to move away from the break and fix model we having been using to manage our health and move towards a culture of prevention .. we need be reaching for a higher bar -especially for our children..Schools of all places should modeling habits for prevention . Kids today barely have a chance against the marketing of junk foods only to have it reinforced in school?
We can do better for our kids than this-

Sharing the Privilege of Abundance

Commented Nov 27, 2009 at 18:51:53 in Impact

“Thank you for this post.
We can and should make the difference ..no child should ever be hungry.
I am just back from visiting a soup kitchen in Detroit in a city with reportedly over 40k homes without water..and reports of varying numbers of homeless children and families into the thousands.
Despite the escalating numbers-
Detroit has some amazing models in place for bridging some of the outcomes of poverty-
Primarily the Capuchin Soup Kitchen where their Urban USDA Organic Certified Garden is instrumental in delivering food for the 2000 meals prepared each day.

“Here in Sacramento, ALL the leading grocery stores - Raleys, Safeway, Trader Joe's, etc always HAVE BIG "clear-outs" of food about to be beyond their expiration date. Whenever I go shop there - especially Trader Joe's - there are always trucks from the various food banks lined up to take away anything within a day or so of expiration. I hope that most of this goes to "Soup kitchens" which will utilize the food products before they become bad....but I have been told that that is the case. So sad that this is what America has come to.”

“This is really beautiful.

I believe miracles often wear a mask..

And that the power of the miracle often does not come with horns, the long driveway and big gates...

This would be one of those times..

Frequently miracles blend into the invisible...

Thanks for allowing this miracle into your life and thanks for sharing.

“While current law requires a list of immediate hazardous ingredients, companies do not have to list ingredients that may cause harm more gradually.

People deserve to know what toxic chemicals are found in their household products. This is especially important for children Children are not small adults; rather, they are a developing version of an adult. Simply put, children are under construction. They are unfinished and their developing systems are quite fragile.

We know, for instance, that in children the brain continues to develop into their twenties, and this makes their brains potentially more vulnerable to toxicants. They breathe much more rapidly, so they take in more toxins through their lungs.

In the work to prevent cancer risk when we have the opportunity to eliminate unnecessary and preventable exposures to those toxins found to harm human health we should.

For me working to educate law makers is an exercise in frustration...

I do keep hope that one day there will be a shift for change...
Keep up the great work.

A smart practice to subscribe to when we work towards a world of Less Cancer.

“We come from a culture of break and fix health care ..while by choice or circumstance we purchase our health care off the shelf..
I founded the Less Cancer Campaign because we as a culture are great at treating cancer-but not very good at preventing cancer.
An obvious example has been the 4.8 million premature deaths attributed to smoking last year alone worldwide. Smoking accounts for 39 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Smoking causes more than $167 billion in annual health-related economic costs. Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different cancers.
But that said we know the choices need to be even further reaching than smoking relative to the statistics that suggest we have never had more cancers not related to smoking.
Personally I struggle with change everyday- from breaking my own cigarette habit 14 years ago to not picking up that bag of jelly beans to insuring I exercise everyday..
Our choices mean everything when it comes to health...and choices can mean everything when working to reduce the cancer risk.

For children, depending on the exposure, some of the first systems to show negative health effects can be the neurological and respiratory systems.

The effects of environmental exposures on children are of particular concern when we consider the rising incidence of pediatric cancers. Never before has there been so much cancer in children.

I have gifts for life because of my response to to the situation...
How we respond to fear is everything...and I can only suggest in fearful situations that we look for the leader in our selves..its there and there is wide reaching potential for great things to occur.

“In addition to the unspeakable treatment of animals in factory farming...When you understand some of the chemicals that are being added to some of these livestock/foods and the potential for negative outcomes for human health for me personally they are exposures that are unnecessary and preventable. With incidences of cancer escalating for those cancers unrelated to smoking we must look to our food first.

“In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared the "War Against Cancer." - I have to wonder how many people since that time like Mable Randon on oxygen had their power shut off or have been under threat of having their power shut off.
There is no more lethal influence on cancer than poverty, Being poor can affect a person's chances of getting cancer- because of lifestyle, environment, less access to screenings, diagnoses, or treatment.
Sadly Mable Randon was not the first and won't be the last. In war on cancer billions have been spent on research and yet last year cancer took the lives of about 230,000 Americans-almost 70% more than in in 1971....
Billions of dollars spent and millions of lives lost -and today more cancer ever...
All that and seemingly we have lost site of humanity .....
Thankyou for shedding light on this story.

“This is one of those fantastical stories so difficult to believe ...it reminds me of Kent cigarettes in the 1950's with the "Micronite" filter offering "the greatest health protection in cigarette history." Its secret: asbestos.

Kent used to advertise in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine, promoting the "health protection" Kents provided.

Kent would set up displays at medical conventions and sent cartons of Kents to thousands of doctors and dentists. Some ads suggested that the A.M.A. had endorsed the Micronite filter.

Money has long been the first in line when it comes to human health..this story, while sad comes of no surprise.

Pesticides Linked To Parkinson's

Pesticides Linked To Parkinson's

Commented Sep 18, 2009 at 11:08:52 in Living

“I think it is important to remember as a society we often make the leap to "safety" when there is a lack of science-

A lack of science does not translate to safe.

But truth be told in laboratory studies for pesticides have long been linked with human health risks to not only include Parkinson's but cancer as well.

In my family for instance we have a lot of cancer- we never did before my generation-though ironically all the families in my neighborhood where I grew up have a lot of cancer..so while it runs in my family it also runs in my neighborhood.

If we have an opportunity to reduce the unnecessary and preventable exposures to things like pesticides we should in light of the fact we know that sound science has found negative health outcomes to human health.

When we work to prevent cancer -we work towards stopping cancer at the cause-when we work to prevent cancer there is an opportunity to reduce many types of illnesses.

“In Virginia unfortunately pesticide spraying still occurs with in range of school children....
This in a time where in this country when we have over 46+children every school day diagnosed with cancer.
American children miss over 12 million school days each year because of Asthma.
So as a response Virginia continues to allow pesticide spraying next to children's play spaces and school yards....despite the sound science.
Children are not small adults; rather, they are a developing version of an adult. Simply put, children are under construction. They are unfinished and their developing systems are quite fragile.
