What Maids Teach Us About Physical Health, Life Longevity

What Maids Teach Us About Physical Health, Life Longevity

Commented Dec 05, 2009 at 20:03:34 in Living

“Good idea .. but remember...use non-toxic cleaning supplies while most cleaners don't list ingredients, flags to look for are on are the warning labels "Danger," and "Poison" indicate that a product is corrosive, flammable or combustible, or irritating , they have the potential to cause serious personal injury or illness during, or as a result of, normal use. Products labeled "Danger" or "Poison" are often most hazardous, while those with "Warning" or "Caution" labels are not thought to be as dangerous. And yet even with these known to cause immediate harm we have little knowledge of those chemicals thought to have more long term exposures that are not listed at all.
The best bet is to make your own- use vinegar and baking soda...
So in short clean-get exercise and clean with joy and inspiration knowing you are preventing risk to your health and the health of your family.

Sharing the Privilege of Abundance

Commented Nov 27, 2009 at 18:51:53 in Impact

“Thank you for this post.
We can and should make the difference ..no child should ever be hungry.
I am just back from visiting a soup kitchen in Detroit in a city with reportedly over 40k homes without water..and reports of varying numbers of homeless children and families into the thousands.
Despite the escalating numbers-
Detroit has some amazing models in place for bridging some of the outcomes of poverty-
Primarily the Capuchin Soup Kitchen where their Urban USDA Organic Certified Garden is instrumental in delivering food for the 2000 meals prepared each day.

“Here in Sacramento, ALL the leading grocery stores - Raleys, Safeway, Trader Joe's, etc always HAVE BIG "clear-outs" of food about to be beyond their expiration date. Whenever I go shop there - especially Trader Joe's - there are always trucks from the various food banks lined up to take away anything within a day or so of expiration. I hope that most of this goes to "Soup kitchens" which will utilize the food products before they become bad....but I have been told that that is the case. So sad that this is what America has come to.”

“This is really beautiful.

I believe miracles often wear a mask..

And that the power of the miracle often does not come with horns, the long driveway and big gates...

This would be one of those times..

Frequently miracles blend into the invisible...

Thanks for allowing this miracle into your life and thanks for sharing.

For me working to educate law makers is an exercise in frustration...
Currently the model for prevention is not attached to a financial model that is understood by lawmakers and those individuals and industries that support them.
I do keep hope that one day there will be a shift for change...
Keep up the great work.

Dr. Herberman's call to action, advising precaution, was based on the fact that a lack of sufficient scientific evidence does not translate to safe.

A smart practice to subscribe to when we work towards a world of Less Cancer.

“We come from a culture of break and fix health care ..while by choice or circumstance we purchase our health care off the shelf..
I founded the Less Cancer Campaign because we as a culture are great at treating cancer-but not very good at preventing cancer.
An obvious example has been the 4.8 million premature deaths attributed to smoking last year alone worldwide. Smoking accounts for 39 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. Smoking causes more than $167 billion in annual health-related economic costs. Smoking damages nearly every organ in the human body and is linked to at least 15 different cancers.
But that said we know the choices need to be even further reaching than smoking relative to the statistics that suggest we have never had more cancers not related to smoking.
Personally I struggle with change everyday- from breaking my own cigarette habit 14 years ago to not picking up that bag of jelly beans to insuring I exercise everyday..
Our choices mean everything when it comes to health...and choices can mean everything when working to reduce the cancer risk.

From that experience I have come to learn that miracles often wear a mask and while initially afraid of the several negative out comes -the journey was OK and when I got through it --better than OK.
I have gifts for life because of my response to to the situation...
How we respond to fear is everything...and I can only suggest in fearful situations that we look for the leader in our selves..its there and there is wide reaching potential for great things to occur.

The Moral Ferocity of Eating Animals

“In addition to the unspeakable treatment of animals in factory farming...When you understand some of the chemicals that are being added to some of these livestock/foods and the potential for negative outcomes for human health for me personally they are exposures that are unnecessary and preventable. With incidences of cancer escalating for those cancers unrelated to smoking we must look to our food first.

“This is one of those fantastical stories so difficult to believe ...it reminds me of Kent cigarettes in the 1950's with the "Micronite" filter offering "the greatest health protection in cigarette history." Its secret: asbestos.

Kent used to advertise in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the New England Journal of Medicine, promoting the "health protection" Kents provided.

Kent would set up displays at medical conventions and sent cartons of Kents to thousands of doctors and dentists. Some ads suggested that the A.M.A. had endorsed the Micronite filter.

Money has long been the first in line when it comes to human health..this story, while sad comes of no surprise.

Organic Agriculture Beats Biotech at its Own Game

Commented Aug 18, 2009 at 00:03:29 in Green

“This is a great post-Thank you.
Your point about the precautionary principle is spot on
A lack of data does not translate to safe-
For myself- when shopping for food I reach for local and USDA organic when convenient and affordable.
While the USDA National Organic Program is not a perfect system-
For me- it is the higher bar when looking to reduce exposures that may or may not have the potential to increase risks to human health.
In the work to raise awareness for stopping cancer at the cause -If we are to really look at prevention relative to our health and health care-we must expand our view for a greater understanding of the unnecessary and preventable exposures added to our foods and our environment.
As a consumer in the interest of precaution I avoid the added chemicals to foods when possible.

Americans need to widen the focus beyond purchasing their health care -
We need to stop polluting our bodies--especially for exposures that are unnecessary and preventable.

hp blogger Alison Rose Levy replied on Aug 16, 2009 at 23:39:50

“Thanks, Bill, and you know what I find so fascinating is how Thurman's insights-- which really point to society-wide challenges to health-- like the ones that you mention-- are harder to get our arms around then the individual considerations of diet, as in "What should I eat?".

Obviously, we could address many chronic diseases if more people ate a healthy diet -- and I've written on nutrition for over 14 years at this point. I did a three part article comparing raw, vegetarian, blood type and low carb diets-- back in 1995,

So eating right is core-- don't get me wrong.

But what fascinates me is that we've been conditioned to talk about diet, while overlooking food production and quality, industry influence, environmental pollution, and the forces that block insurance access. I wonder whether a lot of people discount integrative approaches because they think they are about nothing but diet.

Would love to hear peoples' comments on why we hesitate to look at the big picture..?”

“Are you speaking religiously or scientifically? Environment risks to human health are not "revealed truths" they are far from settled scientific issues. Statistics certainly do not seem to support the view that mankind's exploitation of the environment since the industrial revolution has caused a serious decline in human health. Quite to the contrary. The last century saw the greatest increase in longevity and standard of public health in the history of mankind. In specific cases cancer has been linked to exposure to certain specific chemicals and products (both natural and synthetic, mesothelioma and asbestos, tobacco products) but general environmental factors would not seem to play a role given the decrease in cancer rates (age adjusted). Nutritional issues play a much larger role. Diets rich in fresh fruits and vegetables - conventional or organic - are the healtiest overall.

The higher prices of organic produce guarantee that less fresh fruits and vegetables will be consumed by consumers of organic produce. In order to feed their families more fresh fruits and vegetables and lower their cancer risk consumers should spend their available food budget on conventional fresh fruits and vegetables.
