LGBT Activists Criticize Obama's Speech for What Wasn't There, But Miss a Very Big Thing That Was

Commented Oct 13, 2009 at 14:05:18 in Politics

“I have not said nor implied that HCR needs to be abandoned for the sake of LGBT marriage rights. The logical fallacy which you speak of is for those feel that if the POTUS isn't speaking about "OUR" issues then he isn't doing anything. As you pointed out the Executive Branch deals with more than one issue on a daily basis. So why is it that if i say to be patient there are other issues that take precedence i'm the bad guy.

I will not back down from you or anybody else on this matter, we have (USA) have oil tanker load of issues that need to be addressed and addressed they will be.”

Eris23 replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 14:44:14

“Nobody's asked you to back down. In fact, it's you who has done that. Furthermore, the concern with Obama seems to be less about talk and more about action. Again, he has the authority to end DADT right now under the law. Through executive order, he could come up with something creative that would most certainly get under the skin of the homophobes and result in a court case that implicated DOMA. None of this requires any political capital since it requires no act of Congress. Yet, you keep telling people to "shut up" through saying "be patient." Well, here's another euphemism in the context for you: "that's nice." ;)”

“To LintLass

I have not put the notion that one has to choose between one or the other, I am merely saying he can't get everything done at once as many think needs to be done. In fact why aren't the LGBT mouth pieces putting pressure on congress to support the repeal (DADT) & the right to be married? It would be simple if families/individuals are equal be we don't live in a society that acts in equal terms regardless of the propaganda that is sold.”

“Should the NFL decide to allow the group his to purchase the St. Louis Rams then they (NFL) will have a lot too explain to the fans, players, networks. The commissioner and other owners will not vote with money in mind but who will it affect the players, coaches, personnel of all ethnicity. This is a nuclear bomb with 2seconds left on the timer. NFL/Owners better cut the correct wire.”

Nate16 replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 14:44:13

“Can the NFL explain players convicted of actual crimes, not just stating an opinion, for everything ranging from guns and ammo charges, domestic violence, assault, animal cruelty and torture, DUI's, and homicide?
I don't see people coming out of the woodwork to condemn their actions like everyone is condeming Rush. Tank, Dante, Plaxico, Pac-Man, Michael... and that's just in the past couple of years. Since 2000 there have been over 500 arrests of NFL players for crimes such as the above. Rush wants to be the minority owner of a team in a private, not public, business venture, and look at the reaction. Unbelievable.”

LGBT Activists Criticize Obama's Speech for What Wasn't There, But Miss a Very Big Thing That Was

Commented Oct 13, 2009 at 11:56:46 in Politics

“So what you are saying is that the Civil Rights Movement took place in a month? No i happened over a long period of time, and being that the LGBT struggle is being coupled with CRM then they should know that nothing happens over night no matter how much we may want it.

I support the LGBT and it cause but don't think for a minute that I would put your right to get married over health care, education, etc.... You will get the right to be married in time and also the pain an agony of divorce as well.”

AlexTryst replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 12:28:01

“The LGBT movement has been around for decades. It's not a new concept, so inferring that is is, is just factually incorrect.

I disagree with your notion that nothing can happen in a month. (Not even sure where you picked up that reference as it wasn't in my original post.) I was just reading a totally unrelated article in which the writer expressed that "life happens in an instant". That's the truer of the statements. The ones you love can be gone in an instant just by stepping off the curb and inadvertantly into oncoming traffic. The government protects those straight marrieds that have this unfortunate event happen to them, but they don't do it for those gay Americans.

The human element is missing from the debate. These are people we're talking about. Not a political agenda or some self-interested non-profit but real people who live and die and deserve to be treated as human. As a devout Christian, I consider putting the humanity of people far ahead than any other political agenda.

(While it's not part of this article, it's why I do support health care reform as well.)”

Eris23 replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 12:13:02

“What I find so silly about all of this is the notion that, in order to get something like gay marriage, health care reform would have to be abandoned. It's a logical fallacy. The White House deals with more than one issue at a time every day, and the Executive Branch largely exists to do just that.

What I also find absurd is the rather ugly rhetoric that equal protection under the law for homosexuals is a "right" that some are trying put above various other struggles. It's generally just another way for someone to say "I care, but I really don't, so please just shut up."”

LintLass replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 12:11:08

“Why do you accept the notion that you must choose one over the other?

Actually, it certainly simplifies health care if all families (or individuals) are equal.

LBGT couples get some of the worst of the corporate health care ripoffs. Twice.”

“I meant to say your issues are being.....”

LintLass replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 11:06:01

“Some of these issues are complex. Justice should be *easy.* A no-brainer.

What really holds things up is simply that some people *want* LBGT people not to enjoy full American rights, ...and find stigmatizing us in politics a very useful wedge issue.

The GOP can turn around and look at their increasingly-rudderless and hysterical 'movement' and say, 'Listen. Some of us have our religious beliefs on these folks, and many Americans do not. The Constitution says all are equal, and that it's our job to provide equal protection under the law. It's not our place to choose one church's beliefs over another, and our duty as Americans is clear. So we're not going to have a knock-down drag out trying to further divide our nation over stigmatizing, materially-harming, and disenfranchising millions of Americans in the name of our beliefs. If our beliefs are worth anything, they don't need the government to force people to obey them just to get cheap election advantages based on hate rather than our merits or policy.

So we're going to allow equality for all Americans and let society discuss what it means. That's what America is about. '

Could be that easy. Not holding my breath there, though.”

AlexTryst replied on Oct 13, 2009 at 10:13:51

“Try looking into the face of someone who has waited more than half their life or the majority of their life and say that. They have a right to get up everyday and get in the face of every politiciand about their issues and needs whether others perceive it as more/less important. Standing in line and waiting does nothing for any issue (not just these). Our politican system is proof of that.”
