Problem was the cost of crude oil had risen from $1.25 per barrel at the start of the '70s to $45 per barrel at the end. Three minutes for a simple query (the software only allowed one index) with only 17,000 records (hey, it was a long time ago). Vendor's tech support said that was optimal, best we could expect.
I figured out how to use an obscure command in the vendor's command set...got response time down to five seconds...,Yup, five seconds.
My company demonstrated my methodology to the vendor.
Next user group meeting (Costa Mesa CA) the vendor demo'ed it to users and called it their own. (I had wondered why I wasn't given a spot on the schedule to make a presentation.)”
