“A 50% reduction in the Pentagon budget or the number of troops might reduce our ability to conduct wars in other countries, but in no way would it reduce our security here, or prevent us from protecting our shores.

What's more, if we stop conducting wars In other countries and stop killing people the way cops in this country kill unarmed suspects, maybe they would burn fewer of our flags. Will the Pentagon eventually provoke Egypt-like demonstrations?”

“Somewhere, sometime, soon, someone will open up to being heterosexual and the fear of the repercussions of admitting to a lifestyle that includes guilt free love of someone of the opposite sex.

Somewhere, sometime soon a woman will get elected or selected to a post in government without being described as the "first woman to achieve this lofty goal" without being saddled with the currently popular adverbs included in her "up from her bootstraps" bio and which will not evade the fact that her father paid for her tuition at an Ivy League college, where she majored in beer and pot.

I'm talkin' to you Hillary.

When that happens, we know we will have finally achieved equality.”

“"It has nothing to do with guns"?
If you took a few guns out of the mix of thought, race, culture, etc. wouldn't our society be a little better off?”

brahms2 on Nov 8, 2013 at 17:58:28

“There would still be the same violent minds with the same propensity - this is the tough issue, the subject that is important.  I suppose if you could take the guns from the criminals and somehow stop all gun runners then outlawing guns would help in total homicide numbers.  There would still be the same amount of attacks, just less deaths.  The same amount of muggings, attacks, rapes, etc. - all crime that minus gun violence and other forms of killing would increase. Yet, you can't do that can you?  Making guns illegal will only give criminals and government a monopoly on them.”

“Umm.

Consider the effects that ObamaCare might have on this argument about fracking: If the insurance companies had to insure the people who live in areas where fracking goes on and discovered how much it was costing them and the US government to repair the health of those people, they might lend their massive clout to stopping a public health problem by stopping the fracking.

The fracking companies and the pipeline companies point to "energy independence" as a rationale for this practice, but everything is connected to everything else, and their rationale falls flat when the public health costs are counted.”

ny upstate on Nov 8, 2013 at 08:57:09

“i know! i thought of the very same thing when writing. NY moratorium is in place waiting for a 'health assessment' study that was due 6/13. groups want that changed to a 'health impact' study. more & more evidence comes out everyday, the closer fracking moves to populated areas the more harmful health effects are realized. the industry has stopped trying to counter punch those effects and are going straight for the false promises of jobs & money. my concern is the secret trade agreement -TPP pushed by o-bam, which would allow energy corps to over ride ANY environmental federal/state/local law. it would totally remove any community's choice not to frack. fortunately other pacific rim countries are balking at the details of this trade deal. right now the sticking point is pharmaceutical prices. TPP covers drugs, food, additives, GMOs, energy- pretty much everything. a huge document with only 5 pages for actual trade, the rest of it gives corporations unlimited power. did we ever think, in America, our health may end up depending on other country's common sense? something is really really wrong with this picture!! time may not be on our side.”
