Vaccination: A Conversation Worth Having

Commented Nov 16, 2009 at 16:49:25 in Living

“I honestly don't know which is worse: the "let's make a vaccination for everything" mindset or the "let's fear every vaccination developed" mindset. The fact is the vaccinations most of us get as children has come very close to erradicating polio, mumps, measles, etc. We are 50+ years from when these diseases were rampant and deadly, especially for poor neighborhoods. So I tend to be thankful for vaccines in general, although I do understand the concern for too much of a good thing. Incidentally, I had a flu two weeks ago. I stayed home, rested, drank fluids and ate chicken noodle soup. I felt better in about 5-7 days. Go figure.”

“The only way the Catholic Church is surviving in the United States is by importing priests from third world countries, and by the influx of the hispanic population that is heavily Catholic. Without those two factors, many parishes across the country would be forced to close.”

“None of the ethics complaints stuck - she had to pay for the travel of her children and that's it. The only consequences she will suffer now is the lucrative career she will have as an author and speaker. By constantly attacking her, it flames her base even more. Let's face it, there is nothing anyone can say to make her ardent base dislike her, and there is nothing Palin can do to make any of us appreciate her or think she is someone of substance. It's just like Hillary. People either love her or hate her, and very few ever switch sides.”

Who has a thing to fear from citizen critics when the deciding body isn't an independent commission, but one that you picked from a short list of volunteers and hangers-on from the previous (also corrupt) administration?”

I agree with you that it's tiresome to constantly be reading about Palin in the press when we are facing so many serious issues as a nation. But covering complex issues is hard for the MSM since it requires more work than the unusual behaviors of Republican governors (Dems had the monopoly a few years ago at the gubernatorial scandal level).

That said, it makes *perfect* sense for Moore to continue writing about this. Her interest is in Alaska, and Palin's actions are of transcendent importance for Alaska's immediate future and political culture.”

Why do we not hear the predominately good stories? And I do acknowledge that it works both ways. Most Europeans and Canadians only hear of the disasters of our health care system, not the successes. The Trouble With Suze

“I can't believe Suze - or anyone -would make such a lame argument, but it does bolster my belief about how out of touch she - and others who make their living off of being paid to talk on TV -are to the financial realities of the majority of Americans. Most advice doled out is for people who make well above the median income levels in this country. And, as others have pointed out, that excludes not only teachers but nurses, fire fighters, police, mechanics, sanitation workers, utlity workers, food manufacturing workers, etc. In other words, the people of this country who put in a real day's work.”

Women Need to Support Women at Work

Commented May 14, 2009 at 19:41:13 in Business

“I have had several bosses, and it pains me to say this, the absolute worst of them were women. Here are some characteristics that they all had in common: micro-managing, inability to make sound decisions and stick to them, operating out of fear from higher-ups instead of operating from a place of security, and lack of flexibility with staff. The all-time worst of them was a supervisor having an affair with the married CEO of the company. She became so enraptured with him that she spent increasingly long lunch hours at department stores buying new outfits to impress him. When one of the partnerships that owned the business got wind of the affair, they nixed it. She was "transferred", never to be heard from again. Papers were delivered to our office that informed the company she had filed personal bankruptcy and could not pay the bill she incurred from throwing a personal party for a relative on the property. Geeze!”

I have had, in the past 30 years or so, approximately equal numbers of male/female bosses (8 of those years in the military).

I'd have to say my experiences are quite different than yours - it's been pretty much a wash. I had some great men and women commanders and bosses, and had some really worthless male/female commanders and bosses.

The absolute worse boss (commander) I had was a female, but that wa"\s just a small matter of degree, as I can point to a male boss (civilian) who was like a "little brother twin" to her - i.e., very close, but not quite as bad.”

By then, the GOP will have completed a purge of leadership with ties to the Bush White House, and the generation now dominating the party will have dwindled to the point that it no longer has significant power in the party.

What's more significant is how the present status of the party renders them unable to to significantly oppose the present president's agenda.”

There is an entrenched, well-financed set of vested interests who want to shut down inquiry, research, or debate - the vaccine manufactuerers. They, not Carrey, are the irrational ones. Carrey and the anti-vaccine movement are simply challenging the status quo by suggesting that in fact, we are not doing enough to make our vaccines safe. Before we can make them safer, however, we need to study and understand what exactly is unsafe about them. Isn't that what Carrey is suggesting - that we need to do more independent research on what these things are that we are injecting into our toddlers? To shut down the debate is not only premature, but dangerous.”
