Daniel Webb Dead: Obese SC Man Died After 8 Months In Home Recliner, Didn't Have Health Insurance
Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 22:54:35 in Home
“I agree that he did not have to die from obesity. Could you park a loved one in a recliner and watch him die over 8 months? There was a complete breakdown among the social ties of family and friends here. Being unemployed, he may have well qualified for medicaid. This story saddens me on so many levels. He may have given up on himself, but it sounds like no one around him took the initiative to help him.”

“Some of the comments are snide and childish. I am not judging this man for his health problems; I do, however, have a problem with his family allowing him to stay in a recliner for 8 months. They could have called the paramedics under the pretense of chest pains; anything to get him out of the recliner and into some kind of care. My brother-in-law has had substance abuse problems for years; he has burned many bridges, but when he became deathly sick last winter with pnemonia, we got him to the hospital. The social worker on the staff got him signed up for medicaid, got his disability moving - in short, it ended up being the best thing that happened to him. We could have let him die on the couch, but we did not.”

“Did you not see the part where it says the family does not have health insurance? I was in an ambulance for 7 minutes and received a $500 bill for that alone. A 4 day stay at the hospital where I pretty much just got fluids, a few xanax and about 4 blood draws was $48,000. Fortunately I have insurance which paid for the vast majority of it. This family didn't have that luxory. Did you not see the part where it says they had to cut a hole in the wall just to get him out?
I swear the comments on this thread are disturbing.”

Daniel Webb Dead: Obese SC Man Died After 8 Months In Home Recliner, Didn't Have Health Insurance
Commented Nov 19, 2009 at 22:21:59 in Home
“Would anyone you know in your family or circle of friends allow a person to stay in a recliner for 8 months? Since he was unemployed, did the family look into medicaid? The family called paramedics twice, once when he hurt his knee and at the very end. Did anyone not think to call the paramedics in between? Say he is having chest pains, say anything, but do not allow the person you love sit in a chair and die over 8 months. The lack of health care was secondary to the lack of common sense - and yes - common decency that this man's family showed him. There are a million things wrong with our health care system, but we do have to take some initiative for ourselves and the people we love.”
otownnole replied on Nov 20, 2009 at 16:43:47
“I mean really. At some point during those eight months he would have had to get up to eat or he would have lost some weight. Sure it may seem cruel to let a family member starve but when they can't even get up to use the bathroom or get their own food, drastic measures are required.”

“The title of this article is disingenuous. This man did not die from lack of health insurance; he died from morbid obesity and a lack of common sense care from those around him. Leaving him in a chair for eight months? If this was done to an elderly person, it would be called elder abuse . There are enough health insurance horror stories out there without stretching this one into one of those tales. I am sorry that he passed away, and I am sorry that his loved ones stood by and allowed it to happen.”
TazoWolf replied on Nov 19, 2009 at 22:05:45
“From the article: "His health kept getting worse, and Ada Webb said she begged hospital officials to keep him after doctors treated his knee injury in March. But the couple had no way to pay and were sent home."
Clearly the care was wanted, but lack of insurance prevented it. Yes, he died from morbid obesity, but you don't know all the facts. Maybe he had Cushing syndrome or another medical condition that caused it. Not all obesity is the result of diet and activity levels, and such things could have been diagnosed and treated if he'd had health insurance.”

“More insurances competing with each other. No taxes or penalties on insurance plans (Pelosi plans to tax so called "Cadillac" plans), so plans with larger sealing will be available to us.
Pelosi wracking of insurance industry is not an answer. It makes such unfortunate cases more likely to occur. Cost cutting, you know!
If you thing that Obamacare will offer you unlimited service - you must be dreaming. Or you never lived in a socialist country with free health care and education. I grew up in one of those working class paradises. It ain't pretty.”
