Why Do Parents Still Urge Children To 'Clean Your Plate'?

Commented Apr 24, 2013 at 13:30:44 in Parents

“It's not the dinner foods causing obesity, it's the steady stream of hollow non-perishable debris before and after. If anything kids should be allowed to develop a mild appetite then eat their fill on the fresh stuff.”

“Food martyrs are tedious, but a fasting period is a useful measuring stick for nutrient status. If your menu is well-formulated enough that you can go 24 hours without stress you're in good shape. If you experience a nervous breakdown after 3 hours you're eating the wrong stuff.”

“I'm not sure. If you look at people who stay lean on traditional cuisines, I doubt any of them are weighing and recording every day. Anxious overeating is the behavior of malnourished people.”

“I agree with you. Of course I'd just add the word "stressed," prior to the word "malnourished" in your final sentence there.”

“Avoiding commercial food is wise but I certainly use more than 1 tsp sea salt when I cook, and my BP is 112/66. Probably something else at work here.”

mzrecycle on Jan 15, 2013 at 08:15:35

“It's just an individual thing. Due to heredity, some people can't tolerate much salt without raising their BP a lot. Others need salt or their BP is too low.
There are reasons that sea salt is better than commercial table salt, but difference in effect on BP is modest.”

David Roth GED on Jan 14, 2013 at 16:17:36

“Bingo. I can't believe the article made no distinction between "table salt," which isn't even fit for human consumption, and natural sea salt. The latter, especially if gently sun dried, contains an amazing array of rare minerals, and runs a completely different course in the body when consumed.

That said, people who switch to sea salt should be aware that the real stuff contains little to no iodine (unlike table salt, which is fortifed with iodine). So that if they do not consume seafood, they should add some form of seaweed to their diet to avoid an iodine deficiency. The easiest is "Kelp granules," as so little is needed that the taste of food isn't even altered.”

“There's a lot to criticize about the US food supply, but I kinda like restaurants the way they are--celebratory deviations from daily (hopefully healthful) eating. If I plan to dine, I'll probably skip a meal earlier in the day or go for a bikeride to work up an appetite, and not be afraid to customize my meal (within reason) to exclude the worst bits.

It's definitely a problem if people use these places as daily staples, but all the smug judgment and policing is not necessarily helpful.”

“Almost all wheat foods are high-glycemic junk whose only nutrients are artificially fortified, so when a person eliminates it's hard to distinguish the gluten absence from the more significant blood sugar regulation (depending on which food they choose as a replacement).”
