“Exactly. The same tree rings that are claimed to be an accurate proxy for deducing temperatures thousands of years ago.
Hiding the decline means truncating that tree ring data when it begins to diverge from the instrumental temperature record. If tree ring data shows a decline from 1980 on, (or 1961 in the Briffa reconstruction) - then the data is probably NOT an accurate proxy for temperature. After all, the temperature rose from 1980-1998, didn't it?
The tree ring data shows the opposite, so that section of the data is cut off. That is what hiding the decline is all about. The decline implies that tree ring data is a poor measuring stick for temperature.”

"It’s no use pretending that this isn’t a major blow. The emails extracted by a hacker from the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia could scarcely be more damaging(1). I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I’m dismayed and deeply shaken by them.
Yes, the messages were obtained illegally. Yes, all of us say things in emails that would be excruciating if made public. Yes, some of the comments have been taken out of context. But there are some messages that require no spin to make them look bad. There appears to be evidence here of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released(2,3), and even to destroy material that was subject to a freedom of information request(4).
Worse still, some of the emails suggest efforts to prevent the publication of work by climate sceptics(5,6), or to keep it out of a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(7). I believe that the head of the unit, Phil Jones, should now resign. Some of the data discussed in the emails should be re-analysed.

So far, you haven't done that.
I find it very interesting that you all are afraid of the very emails that you so venemently assert proves that GW is a hoax.
Your fear of the ACTUAL emails tell us quite clearly what your about, and also what the climate scientists are about.
The deniers are about spreading lies, and the scientists are about spreading truth.
Only the 'true believers' could possibly think otherwise.”

Or you can continue to "quote" the emails.

“Sorry MGhamma, but you are wrong. The CRU is an organization funded by the taxpayers of the US and the UK. That server and its data is therefore our property. Under the FOIA, which exists both here and in the UK, that data is supposed to be publicly available. Some of the emails explicitly discuss Phil Jones stating he will delete files rather than hand them over to FOIA requests, and requesting colleagues in the US delete their emails (i.e. destroying evidence). Both of these actions are criminal acts.
The hacker/leaker/discloser was merely "correcting" the illegal security policies being practiced on the CRU server by an organization out of control and refusing to comply with the law. Those emails were by no means in any way "private".”
