“"Child marriage" my foot. These are kids and this is rape!”

“I agree, it is a euphemism for rape. We have may of those same things right here in the U. S..”

“and human trafficing. Most of these people mentioned above sell off their daughters and call it an "arranged" marriage. It's slavery & rape.”

“Having the age of consent being at 16 or 18 is a very recent phenomnena, even in the west. I actually agree with our laws but understand that it's a very recent luxury mush like clean water and antibiotics.”

“Most of these countries now have laws in place criminalizing child marriage. It's the enforcement they're having trouble with...”
dhlincali on Dec 10, 2013 at 10:49:56
“Depends on your culture how you view such a thing. We may consider it rape in the West but in a place like Niger where people have a very low life expectancy, getting married at 15 has always been normal.”

“I think it's that "political correctness" gone too far.”
“The fact is the nice new modern trains, even the classic 50-year old stainless steel CC's, deserve a nicer environment. They need to spruce up the stations, light them better, paint them, tile them. Let in some real sunlight where possible. Skylights. Deaden train sounds. That sort of thing. Make them smell better. Elevate the whole subway experience. They don't want us driving our cars. Give us an alternative that we WANT to use.”

“Amen to all. How can we get the people to smell better?”
“Crime reduction in NYC began when Mayor Dinkins appointed Ray Kelly his police commissioner which is what the new genius mayor, Wilhelm aka deBlasio, should have done.”
Ten90x on Dec 8, 2013 at 10:33:28
“No it didn't and you know how it is that I know this...it's because I was on the job when Dinkens was Mayor and retired when Bloomberg was there. I know exactly when and how it started because I was working it when it all happened. Every PC from Kelly to well Kelly again benefited from what Bratton started in the subway until when he was forced out by a petty Giuliani. The only crime reduction NYC was experiencing when Kelly was in charge the first time came from the massive crime reduction going on in the subways while Bretton was the chief of police. During Kelly's first tenure the moral in the NYPD was the lowest it had ever been. ”
“And every time a new idea comes along the union is against it.
Meanwhile, the union is full of teachers. Where are their ideas for improving results?
I work in a building where there is some education-related office. I frequently share the elevator with teachers. The typical conversation among the teachers involves accumulated sick pay, vacation pay, how much time they "have in", how much time they need to achieve the next level of of something or other or retirement. Never once, ever, have I heard a conversation about a great lesson to teach the kids.”
NYCSSTeacher on Dec 9, 2013 at 06:54:05
“What new ideas are unions against exactly?”
jamesjvhi on Dec 8, 2013 at 02:20:52
“NCLB wasted hundreds of millions of dollars for years. Most teachers knew it was BS, but no one really cares what the people who are actually teaching think about teaching.
It is always some person with little or no experience in education (ie MS. Rhee) who comes up with the answer that will fix all the problems with education in the US if you only give them millions of dollars. They are given millions, and nothing gets better. So then its on to the next "fix" which doesn't work either.
Every year its something different. The only thing that stays the same is the fact that these fix all solutions DON'T WORK.”

“Yes indeed. The ed-reformers have been in charge for 15 yrs now (w/o BTW having produced any improvements). Most teachers have not been allowed to decide what or how to teach it for some time now, have been reduced to scriptreaders, & cannot wait to jump ship.”
“On the one hand everyone is looking for educational reform. We keep hearing about how our kids are slipping and sliding downward in comparison to kids in other parts of the world.
On the other hand we have the union lobbying for more of the same and not actually setting forth creative ideas of their own. Why? because their main concern is protecting teachers, (they are, after all, the the teachers' union), and laziness, an unwillingness to try something new, out of their comfort zone. They want to keep doing the same thing the same way which is destined to keep achieving the same result, for better or worse.”
bethree5 on Dec 7, 2013 at 12:05:51
“1.Randi is not lobbying for more of the same, the union has no clout & jumped onto the DOE bandwagon w/both feet a while back, this is just a bone tossed to the membership. 2.Unions are not in the business of coming up w/ed ideas, they rep for working conditions. 3. Altho teachers/whatever establishment you're talking about might love to, they haven't been allowed to 'keep doing things the same way' even from one school yr to the next for decades. Whole language, new math, project-centered, you name it, the public ed bureaucracy has been churning & bombarding the curriculum w/everybody's great new idea since the '60's!”
“Remember how the subways looked before Giuliani? Every surface covered with graffiti?”
mightydog on Dec 8, 2013 at 12:52:26
“Yeah I remember. And Mussolini made the trains run on time. But for an overbearing tyrannical despot that's an accomplishment....uh Giuliani not Mussolini.”
Ten90x on Dec 8, 2013 at 10:10:07
“Actually they stopped looking like that before Giuliani took office. The crime reduction in NYC began in the subways when Bill Bratton (who is returning) was the chief of the now merged Transit Police. When Rudy became Mayor he brought Grafton back from the Boston PD where he had returned to after leaving the subways and the Transit Police a lot better than they were when he first got there but a couple of years later Rudy forced Bratton out after Bratton appeared on the cover of Time Magazine. Rudy's ego could not handle competition.”
