Walgreens Shoppers May Be Overpaying By Up To 55 Percent: Study

“Again I am not talking about wage practices here.  It may be a particular trait that some find tasteful to justify their purchase at one location versus another.  But when so many large companies can buy government officials and write their own laws that would make smaller business green.  And that may very well indicate that the US needs to rethink the laws on business.  But that will most likely stem from a debate of campaign financing first... If you really want to talk about fair wage practice, have each employee paid a proportionate amount of what the company makes.  Paying them that way will be harder to cook the books because it is reflected to what goes in, what is sold, and what their share of the business is.
But stepping away from the side bar.  When people are whining about the cost of a notebook or the fact that they need a coupon to get the same price that they would get if they were to buy a pallet of notebooks, you will find that there are a lot of people that do not understand that they are also getting a trade off.  The tradeoff being  getting an item that may only be 5 minutes away from them versus 30 minutes, that they didn't have to navigate from one distal part of a sahara of a parking lot, and that they then did not need to wade to the back of the store to get.”

“In the overall scheme of things would need to employ less people because all of their products are under one roof.  Costco perhaps employs more people per store than does Walmart.  But if you were to take all of those products and divid them in to several local business that didn't require a cherry picker to get to half of the merchandise you would be employing many times more people.  That is how they can offer consumers to drink from the cup that drains the local economy.  But I know... "God bless Costco," right?”

JannielB on Sep 5, 2013 at 11:40:32

“You seem bitter, and looking for a fight.  I never said "God bless Costco".  I did say that they are no Walmart, and listed the reasons for my belief.

While I'm not convinced that you are correct about the employees needed...but I'm not going to get sarcastic about it.

I *will* admit to a little resentment re small businesses.  They, and I have seen this with my own eyes, are in a lot, if not most, cases, prone to skimming and to paying employees in full, or partial, cash in order to skirt the laws.  Of course Corps like Costco and etc. are guilty of some fancy book keeping themselves. It's just that they aren't quite so hypocritical as the small business people who expect all of the benefits of modern society whilst doing everything they can to wiggle out of supporting it, and then whine about high taxes.  Just my opinion.

I wish you peace, but if you prefer to turn a blind eye to the complexities in this world, you will never have it.”

“I am not talking about wages here.  I am talking about anti competitive pricing and business.  How many people would go to support a local business with domestic products versus those that would rather make their purchases at other locations.  SO YES IT SORT OF IS THE SAME.”

JannielB on Sep 5, 2013 at 10:47:42

“I see what you are talking about; only in that Costco, due to high volume can sell for less.  However, they sell the same goods that any other business does.  Also, they, in the overall scheme of things, probably employ the same amount of people as would be working in the local business.  So, not really the same.  Peace.”

“Imagine what the prices would be if there were only mom-n-pop stores and no wal-marts. I am not equating walgreens to mom-n-pops. But it is the people that are saying Costco, Walmart, and the internet that are shutting down those businesses and outsourcing US jobs to foreign labor.”

JannielB on Sep 5, 2013 at 10:37:35

“Please don't lump Costco in with Walmart. Apples and oranges. Costco pays fair wages and provides benefits to their employees. Peace.”

“A living wage is a very conservative idea. It would mean that a person would have to work. They would get the money that they would need and then have to distribute it as they need. Since they would be making too much to qualify for medicaid and many other programs they would then be self reliant. PS a living wage should beat the pants off of what medicaid and food stamps would allow.”

BMcCue7 on Aug 1, 2013 at 09:33:53

“Very good point!

Support for the living wage is support for the concept of self-reliance. I like it. Short, sweet, and you could even fit it on a bumpersticker.”

“In homophobic Russia, sister city severs you! Actually I think that severing further communications would be a bad thing... Remember how we would reward other countries by talking with them during the Bush years? Did you see what that had achieved? A boycott of Russian products would be another story. But you have seen how big of a grin Putin had as he was stealing the super bowl ring. They have a lot of oil and a lot of cash, and those that do not, Putin does not give a damn. What would over turn this would be an olympic protest. They want to show the world what they are... Well have the athletes break the law they are the ones that can get the best press on this issue.”
