Does the Senate Bill Hurt Retirees?

Commented Dec 22, 2009 at 13:31:35 in Politics

“I've seen the framing of the HCR debate mostly from the opponents of the bill. They get more air time claiming death panels, high taxes, govt takeover, socialized medicine, can't see my doctor any more, along w all the US Chamber of Commerce anti-reform ads than those who support the bill. Those supporting the bill, trying to explain what is in and what is not in the bill get very little air time. No wonder the polls show support for the bill is falling. The ant-HCR has won with their 24/7 lies, misinformation.

There are some good, substantial things, helpful things in the bill as you have mentioned. The dems need to pass this HCR, and move on to next legislation. There is no need to take 12 months to pass legislation - something is seriously wrong with our congress.”

“Sen. Coburn was on c-span call-in spewing the same rhetoric. Sure, he likes Obama. Obama is a likeable guy. Why is this a story? Let's discuss why the good senator is not doctoring where the need is instead of spreading the "Family of C Street" evangelical values across the world, especially in poor third world countries. Why is he in the senate? Oh, he did say he had a mal-practice suit against him. Why are there so many conservative doctors in congress instead of out there doctoring where the needs are. Why are they so pro setting limits on mal-practice suits. Isn't that putting the government between you and your doctor? These repubs want it both ways, and all of them to be their way.”

“Our corporate media does a fine job of lying, distorting the truth, misinforming the american people. Why? It's business. It's greed. It's control. We get this anti cap & trade or anti climate change drummed into us 24/7 by the media which is controlled by big business. If the oil and coal industry can't control the direction of our new energy policies, they will try and kill everything by using their friends in the media. They do this with all legislation where they have to play fair - let the media kill it using talking heads and deceptive ads.

Your going on Huckabee's show to talk pro-cap& trade shows balls and your willingness to go into the lions' den. Hats off to you.

The conservatives are only going to do and vote on what their church tells them. This was said on c-span call-in show by an evangelical democrat who goes to their churches.”

The president is not the progressive, liberal the republicans said he was and democrats fell in line believing this lie. Yes, if he was a progressive him did blow many changes to implement the change we progressive believe in. President Obama is the pragmatist he said he was during the campaign, however he is a centrist just like Bill Clinton. I voted for him and still support him with my eyes wide open.

I would love to have had a FDR, but I got a Bill Clinton. Obama was given a crisis and could have turned the country left of center but he steered the country back toward the center just a tiny bit from the right where Bush43 took us.

The complaining about what Obama should have, could have is playing right into the opposition hands. Why not write about what he has accomplished in his eleven months, one day in office.”

Learning from Lieberman

Commented Dec 21, 2009 at 11:41:20 in Politics

“We, progressives keep losing our battles because we don't see what is in front of us. Obama is not, have not been a progressive. He calls himself a pragmatist with left leanings. That may be true but he comes off as a corporate centrist just like Bill Clinton. Obama begged the republicans to get on board with the Recovery Act, now with HCR. He gave many tax cuts in the Recovery Act just like the repubs cried for but they voted against the Act and crowed about it.

When single payer was never on the table even for negotiation purposes, then public option used as competition for the insurance companies many liberals should have realize then what the end game was - no public option. You never start the negotiations where you want to end up. Most thinking folks know this. Progressives got screwed - but still should vote for the bill - so we can stand and fight another day. Losing this HCR will weaken our position on other issues. Progressives need to learn from their mistakes, and need to learn the art of negotiation.

Corporate democrats in the form of DLCs have control of congress and the WH. DNCs like Howard Dean and us, democratic voters are the outsiders. Review how things operated under Bill Clinton to get a taste of what's taking place now and for next few years.

Obama and his team are smart, they will win and I support them but with my eyes wide”

Why the Left Fails

Commented Dec 18, 2009 at 15:37:53 in Politics

“You failed to mention the corporatism that was built into our system of government by the 'founding fathers'. Their depiction of who had the right to vote is one example - white men owning property. Another is the ruling by the supreme court in the 1900's that corporations were persons. Also recent ruling by same court that money is 'free speech'. It is no incident all of these rulings were in favor of corporations and the oligarchs. The money grabbers have always ruled this country in their conservative rightwing fashion. The only time a progressive agenda gained control of governing is when it is needed to fix what the conservatives have screwed up. G. Washington, A. Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, FDR, JFK, LBJ, Carter, Clinton and Obama all voted in to fix the mess created by conservative corporations and oligards. During progressive tenures progressive laws get enacted and become part of the country fabric.”

“You're being lied to.

They keep citing in the media the 30 million or so new customers that will bring profits to the insurance industry. The biggest lie that is being sold is that because of this windfall and big pool the industry will be able to keep prices down.

Remember when they, O administration included, said TARP was necessary to get banks lending again? What did the banks do with THEIR government subsidy? One thing they did was start buying other banks. The administration is still, supposedly, begging them to lend.

The health insurance industryn will use their profits to merge into even bigger monopolies. That's been the CONSISTENT trend of big businesses the last 40 years or so. The bill does not remove the health insurance industry's exemption from anti trust laws.

One has to wonder if the plan isn't to create a "too big to fail" health insurance industry - one or two major companies eventually - that has access to permanent bailout taxpayer money through mandates on people to purchase their product.

The trend that the O administration and their economic advisors seem to be encouraging is even more of the economy becoming "privatize the profits, socialize the losses."
You see it with the military (expansion of gov't contracts to private contractors), the financial industry (TARP) and NOW through healthcare. That is what's happening right before your eyes.
THAT IS WHAT THEY'RE SELLING.”

Slouching Toward Health Care Reform

Commented Dec 17, 2009 at 13:51:57 in Politics

“Mr. Reich, I've admired you for years in getting the real message out to the people. What we have here is a WH that's not progressive, but centrist. When the president selected Rahm for his chief of staff I knew then that liberals and progressives were not going to get what we want. We have to remember the actions of the president when he was trying to get the "Recovery Plan' passed thru congress his greatest concern was courting the republicans. The bill was enacted with more items the conservative wanted than what progressives wanted. At the start of the HCR, single payer was taken off the table and the desire to maintain the private system was first in line. I believe the HCR should pass for some of things are beneficial.
One thing to take away from these 11 months of a democratic congress and administration is that they will take liberals and progressives for granted if we don't fight, fight, and as FDR said 'I believe in the things that you believe in, but you have to make me do what you want me to do. Make me'. We have to make this admin and congress do what progressives and liberals want. If not they will do what the status quo corporations want thing to do.”

Obama is governing from the right and he's become an absolute fraud when looking at his rhetoric during the campaign. Arianna is correct when she called this health care bill a bail-out for the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. Mandating people to buy health insurance from private companies with no option is not expanding coverage to 30 million people. This is absurd and disgraceful.”

“Mr. Feldman, I love you folks coming out crying death, death, financial ruins if we do this or do that. I carefully read your article looking for your solution to the HCR. I only found you saying that more time is needed to work this problem out. What's time w/o a solution. What about the other side of the aisle only offering - nothing.

Most critics of HCR come in one of two stripes: 1) stop it and start over, too expensive, concentrate on job creation or It's a socialist program, or 2) not enough folks are covered and no plan to ensure the insurance industry does not rip the people off.

Let's talk seriously about how the industry is getting ready to gained 30 mil clients with no public option to give them competition. Let's talk about how the US Chamber of Commerce and other corporate groups have lied to the people in their ads and thru the lobbyists.

Mr. Feldman, if you want to have a serious discussion, lay it all on the table on, not on what is not proposed in the bill but the lies corporation are selling to keep the system as it is. Why don't ya..... All critics talk about it's the govt' s fault as if it is an abstract thing, but the govt is men and women most acting as whores with their hands out to the very corporations that ripping us off. Why not discuss that.”

RichardU replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 14:08:07

“The Republicans have pushed for reforms, it's just Democrats don't like them. Tort reform, sale of policies across state borders, purchasing pools for individual insurance, the same tax treatment for individual insurance as employer-provided insurance, insurance you can keep after leaving your job, stop insurance from dropping customers after they get sick (rather than forcing insurance companies to accept people after they are sick), improve health savings accounts (taxed for one), encourage insurance companies to provide premium rebates for healthy lifestyle choices.

I'm sure there's more, but that's the list I can come up with quickly. In any case, I oppose anything that mandates every American to support an industry that takes 30 cents of every dollar they receive and provides absolutely nothing to the system. How in the world is that acceptable to anyone? When an industry fails to deliver what people want and need, it should die. It should not be propped up by the government.”

WinterParkMom replied on Dec 17, 2009 at 13:52:59

“Here are my solutions for the completely compromised bill as it stands:

How will this bill mandate that all working Americans buy private insurance without any cost regulations on private insurance companies?

Does the bill cap out of pocket expenses and deductibles, annual and lifetime?
Why doesn't the bill mandate insurance rates based on income?
Why does it not cap rate increases at 0% for 1st five years for new customers and only 1% every two years for existing customers?
Does the bill explicitly say there will be no caps on insurance coverage, annual or lifetime?
Why doesn't the bill include windfall taxes?
Why doesn't the bill mandate that rates be based on income?
Why doesn't the bill specifically include minimum of 100k fines for dropping customers in good standing, it's wrong. Fines to be paid into medicare?.
Why doesn't the bill include criminal (murder) charges for any individual making a decision to drop a customer and then customer dies?
Why doesn't the bill include a repeal of the antitrust legislation that allows these murderers to operate with impunity?”

More and More, Obama Seems a Faux Liberal

Commented Dec 16, 2009 at 15:06:46 in Politics

“Mr. MacArthur, I see you are another person who has bought hook and line into the republican strawman about Obama being a 'liberal'. He never portrayed himself as a liberal, ever. Proof of this pudding was when he selected his economic team, his defense team, his cabinet, and most of all his chief of staff. I expect more from left leaning writers, opinion makers, etc. to do some research on your own and not fall for the republican, corporate media spin every time they utter their lies. The american people deserves better from you.
So now that President Obama is not the 'liberal' the republicans made you believe he was, you have buyer's remorse. Obama is a pragmatist, centrist that leans to the left. Period, that's it. He is another democrat like Bill Clinton who will try to steer the country towards the center. “The corporate media both print and air should stop this conservative nonsense. It seems as no one checked out what President Obama said on the campaign trail about the Iraq war - dumb, and the Afghanistan war, the just war. From day one these conservatives have been so busy painting him as a liberal, a socialist, ant-war, whatever that they missed the whole picture about Obama. The Olso speech was no surprise to me because the president is not a pacifist as the right-wing said nor is he a liberal. He is a pragmatist with left leanings. He wants to hear everyone's ideas.
If President Obama was a republican they would love him dearly, but he's a democrat. They disliked Bill Clinton, not for his policies, but that he was a democrat. Truth be told, as FedChair Greenspan said Clinton is the best president the republicans ever had.
President Obama is an american president who is trying to do what is best for the average american. All of the issues confronting him today were created by conservative right-wing governance - the wars, the economy, the jobs lost. What he is trying to do is turn our ship of state around to sail in a center position without swaying too far right or left, and that's good governing.”

Hank10303 replied on Dec 11, 2009 at 11:52:27

“I agree with all that you said. The point many are missing is that this President, as every president before him and after should be, is a President for all Americans, even those that didn't vote for him. However, the politics of party and governing concepts often interferes with how and what a President will do. What many do is adhere to a party even when some of that parties concepts are too far left or right; i.e., an anti-abortion stand is clearly unconstitutional just as a total ban on guns would be unconstitutional. The only logical way to govern is as a centrist; which is what President Obama is and has always projected in his policies. Those on the right and left only hear the things he says that they like and attack what they don’t. We all should listen and process what he says and we then would understand he has moderate "pragmatic" views (as you stated) not extreme ones.”

They say Obama should stay home and do something about creating jobs for the american people; then they say govt can't create job only the private sector can create jobs. So why isn't the private sector creating jobs?
During the recession of 2001, they said that business should get tax cuts so they can create jobs, Bush43 gave the biggest tax cuts to them in 2001 and 2003; but we had a 'jobless' recovery all during their 8 years in control, and more jobs left this country. You, the left leaning writers and tv/radio hosts/guests do a disservice to the american people when you follow the right-wing talking points as the gospel. They are the ones trying to paint Obama as liberal when he is not. He has the same mind-set and ideology as Bill Clinton and the DLCs, not the DNCs.

“The GOP and "blue dog" Dems are merely doing the bidding of their Corporate Paymasters. The fools who are persuaded to agree with them should check and see who profits and who gets scr*wed before throwing their support to the sharks!”

A Different Kind Of Tears For Obama

Commented Dec 01, 2009 at 12:13:21 in World

“I listened to all the complaints - Obama should do this, should do that, he didn't do this and should do that. What is the poor man to do. It's a good thing that he has his own mind. I voted for him and trust him to do the correct thing based on the information that he has, to include classified information. USA is a big country with 300 plus million people and every persuasion is wanting his blood.
This reminds me of Bill Clinton's time in office - everybody had an opinion on what he should do or not do. The GOP went after him from day one only because he was a democrat. But Clinton balanced the budget, raised taxes, cut welfare out, grew the economy, passed the corporate GOP sponsored NAFTA bill, then left a surplus. It took him 8 years to do this. Now we heard very little complaints for next 8 years while GOP Bush 43 started two wars and put the tab on credit card, cut taxes for the top 1% and put that on the credit card, oversaw the biggest economic meltdown since great depression. Nobody complained.
Now Obama, another democrat gets into office and everybody has a complaint. They have been complaining since January 21, 2009 because he hadn't created jobs, balanced the budget, and stopped the two wars. Americans in the US are unrealistic and living in tv show land. Give the president a chance.”

“I gave this tired old corporate ho of a political system plenty of chances. I'm sick and tired of being told that a shift between two ruling parties is any kind of change.

Real change will come when we have publicly financed elections. Until then, we're hosed.”

“He's certainly not a "poor man". And even if he was, I'm sure Goldman has a cushy position waiting for him after his "service" to our country. Or maybe he'll go lobby in some foreign country for Big Business, away from the hatred that will continue to grow for him at "home". Politics in this country is two sides of the same coin. One has Military on it (Republican) and the other has Finance (Democrat). Military Industrial Complex anyone?”
