Malia Obama's Science Test: President Tells Story About Daughter's Grades (VIDEO)

“The major point here is that people need to see achievement for their own benefit and not just to please others. True success is reaching our own goals and living the life we want. Not everyone wants the same thing.

Unfortunately, when I was a teacher marks were expected to follow a bell curve with a certain percent in the bottom quarter, the majority in the middle and a few in the top quarter. It wasn't possible to let all kids get over 90% and marks were even shifted downward on mid term and final reports to make it fit this mythical ideal. The same kids always ended up at the top of the class and the bottom. It bothered me when parents would expect A's and 90's from a student who would never meet the goal.

I'm glad I switched careers.”

“Yep. And kids should take examinations when -they- are ready -not- just when the system says they should be ready.”

“To me a crucifix is a symbol of torture and humiliation and having it hanging in all it's gory depictions is not a symbol of love and acceptance but one of support for suffering. I have seen many images in museums, art galleries, churches, public squares etc. and wonder at the mentality of those who expect to give a message anything like the myths of Christ that they say it is supposed to portray to people in general.

As a recovered Roman Catholic it is shameful how the male dominance and acceptance of suffering is meant to be a positive force in shaping the world - but then I do come from basically a kind heart. Baptising for "original sin" is another negative part of the RC belief system but then that's another topic.”

“As a recovered Catholic and long time therapist of sexual abuse survivors I know more harm was done by this "church" than good. There has never been any real support for women and they ask for your last dime when they have food on their table and heat in their home. How do you disband such an organization, sell off the property and give the proceeds to their victims? Abuse has long lasting repercussions and names of abusers should be named.”

daffey replied on May 20, 2009 at 15:58:11

“As a new Catholic, I also realize the debt we owe to the Church. Oh, it has had its problems, and with a 2000 year history and over 2.5 billion who have been Catholic, it has its loads of crap and filth, and this is the latest chapter. If only 1% of all Catholics were rotten to the core (and that would make the Catholic Church a paragon in human history), that’s still about 25 million people who have been rotten to the core. And it's probably more than that!

It's how we see things. As a former secularist and self-proclaimed agnostic, I looked around and saw much of the same thing, but without the burden of commitment or group identity (the secularist could always fall back on 'they don't answer for me!'). But no less the problems. That doesn't mean the Church doesn't need to be taken out and smacked around for this - but this is simply part of the overall investigation of the downward spiral of the church during those decades of the century when it, as well as so many other institutions (education leaps to mind), were suffering from such scandal. Believe or disbelieve as you will, but don't base it on 'because it is so bad'. When you look at anything long enough, the bad isn't hard to find.”

“Until people understand there are many sides to sexual encounters with married people and heartache lasts long after the lust has cooled people need to tell their stories and people who can't believe it will ever happen to them need to read them. knowing the reality gives knowledge to be able to support friends and family who get conned.

If you have never been conned by a really good liar you can sit in judgment of those who have.

When the stories of greed and corruption are told and the liars are held accountable then we might have a chance to create a society based on truth and justice. Better to hear the "real" stories than spend entertainment time watching people get shot up and blown up and come back in the next movie or TV show as if there are not consequences to the behaviour. Why watch and read fiction when the truth is so compelling?”

“My heart goes out to Elizabeth Edwards as I have worked with people who have been down the same road and I too went through the discovery of my husband's infidelity. I know that the way love is experienced prior to knowing the person you most trusted in the world has lied and cheated is very different than after the betrayal. Asking if she still loves John and her answer that it is complicated totally fit with my experiences. The desire for an intact family and to heal the woulds and move on together is very strong. I recount my story and the ways cheaters play with words and twist meanings in my second book Questing France. Unfortunately, many cheaters repeat the process as the excitement of the affair is to tantalizing to resist and going back to life as usual is hard. I support Elizabeth in taking it one day at a time and to see how her life unfolds rather than making rash promises right now. Telling her truth is also very healing as too often people believe the slick liar and blame the wife for the husband's behavior. If she could have controlled him she would have kept him faithful. he chose to lie and cheat.”

“This is probably a case where absolutely no one believes the "slick liar." I have never heard of anyone blaming Elizabeth for anything, other than enabling him to run for president when he clearly was compromised by his repeated lying to the media about this affair.

I think it's easy for most of us to understand why someone facing her health problems, especially, would not want to break up her 31-year marriage. They still have small children, a young adult daughter who needs support (who they're putting through a very public ordeal....for what?), and a life they have made together, for better or worse. A lot to give up and little to be gained (unless she gets to the point where she can't stand the sight of him!).”

“Michelle looked fabulous last night and like a new bride as First Lady she didn't let the color of her dress or the fact she can be very sexy distract from her beauty and elegance. There was a lot of symbolism in her choice that it seems many people missed. It couldn't be a wedding dress and yet is is the very proper color for the first appearance ball gown. I am sure she had it made of a heavy material to keep her warm getting in and out of the cold and a warm coat was just behind view. Stunning without being distracting to Mr. President.”
