“These snarky comments are moronic. It is quite obvious the commenters haven't read the article.

My 10 year old is a brilliant player, and I'm of two minds about it; happy he's found something he enjoys and is gifted at, but terribly worried about something that's so obviously dangerous. Not in the obvious, "broken bones" way -- but in this, later-years way. I've seen the clips of the documentary with the players and coaches about the dementia, and if the scientists can encourage these players to donate their brains for study, so much the better. These brain injuries are terribly worrisome, and kudos to Madden for encouraging better and sturdier helmet design. Anything that can prevent further brain damage in this sport that won't be going away any time soon, the better.

I know if my son wants to continue playing this sport, I will do my best to help him; my husband's mother forbade him to play, and while she probably DID prevent him getting brain damage, she also earned his permanent enmity and resentment for it. So... brain damage versus permanent hatred for mother? Hmm. What a world.”

“And you didn't read the comment thoroughly; he's involved in youth football -- through the city. Not through his public school yet, he's ten years old.

And heck, no, he's not at a Catholic or Christian school. I cannot imagine consigning my son to such excruciating punishment for the duration of his adolescence.”

“I don't want my son being forced to PRAY, dude, because he's then being forced to partake in a ritual involving a mass delusion and idiocy.

I am an atheist. Get it? I think belief in god is insane and stupid. And while I think it's GREAT that you're free to practice your beliefs in ANY manner you see fit, I DON'T want MY son or ME to be forced to PARTAKE in it.

And that includes "generic" prayers. A "generic" prayer is still ASKING AN IMAGINARY FRIEND FOR A FAVOUR. And I don't want my son forced to go through that kind of moronic behaviour just so he can play football.”

“My 10 year old son is a star football player, already -- and I am wary of the coaches and teams we've encountered who demand prayers before games and practices. These are not public school teams, at tis point, so I have no legal recourse -- but I can sure as heck take my son off a team that mandates belief in one religion and demands public obeisance to a god in which I do not believe -- and in whom I am not raising my son to believe, either.

But I'm also PAINFULLY aware that this is probably going to be getting me or him or both of us in trouble at some point, if he wants to continue playing football (which it appears he does); the evangelicals own major real estate in American football, and I hope my son grows up a lot less obnoxious about his beliefs (or non-beliefs) than his mother, or he'll have a much tougher row to hoe than he ought -- Constitutional separation of church and State notwithstanding.”

JimBozo replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 17:04:59

“You should do your best to discourage your son from following this football urge. Sure, kids his size and age can get away with such a violent sport, but when they continue, it gets much more dangerous. Two 75-pound kids can slam into each other without the likelihood of permanent damage, but as the weight/mass increases, so does the risk. The reason full-grown men play the sport, is usually because they consider the money worth the risk. But, considering the permanent damage possibilities, they would do better to develop a not-so-possibly-lucrative career in favor of one which doesn't involve the physical equivalent to being a motorcycle catcher.

My nephew was a high-school football star, but didn't play in college, as any more damage could have meant being crippled for the rest of his life. Is that what you want for your son? Dating cheerleaders is not all it's cracked up to be.”

“Lady .. are you kidding... most pre-game prayers today.. unless he is playing for a Catholic or Christian school are very, very generic. generally praying for protection from injury and for your opposition etc. If he is playing for a Catholic or Christian school .. then I have one question if you don't believe... WHY, WHY, WHY? then who is the hypocrite?”

“He is your son and nobody has more influence on him than you do. If he is on his way to being an elite player and the only teams for elite players are Christian run, you can teach him to have respect for the beliefs of the people he is playing with while also always reminding him that he has the option to explore, examine, choose or reject all beliefs. The football field may or may not be the place for mandatory prayer, but it is equally ill-suited to be the place for debate about religion or freedom of speech, especially for a child.”

Godweiser replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 12:26:45

“I think it's best you let your son make his own decisions about what he can and will tolerate, in this situation. Football's had its share of atheists, just remember that Pat Tilman was one of the more prominent ones...”

“Wow- some tough stuff coming down the road. I can sympathize.
(I started to say 'good luck' with that, but the irony of wishing 'luck' while dismissing prayers was too much for me!)”

Middle Blue replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 12:08:45

“I suspect you're no more forceful about imposing your system on others than the most evangelical of Christians are today.”

Truelee replied on Dec 19, 2009 at 11:50:09

“Christianity is inherently discriminatory. They have murdered millions of non-believers in the entire history of Christianity. There is no understanding for compassion from Christians of other faiths and religions when Christians are the ones persecuting other faiths and religions.

Good luck!”

“No, sorry. The Democrats of Connecticut spoke during their primary -- they wanted Lamont, they wanted Joe gone. Lieberman ran under his own party banner -- literally -- and got the support of high profile Democrats, to their ETERNAL SHAME (including now-President Obama)... and we are ALL reaping what they sowed by not supporting their OWN PARTY MEMBER, Ned Lamont, whose Democratic constituents in Connecticut voted him onto the ballot over Lieberman.

And may those Democrats who supported Lieberman over Lamont, the duly elected primary Democratic candidate, ALWAYS remember that THEY did this to us. More fools, they.

Yes, including Barack Obama.”
