'Jews Are Evil' Assignment Results In Student Boycott

“I don't think ANY of the examples from this article are necessarily inappropriate. These kids are supposed to think from other points of view. Many of the prompts and questions are tongue-in-cheek (student thrown against wall, car hitting baby). All of the examples here seemed either objective or absurdly humorous.”

“This article blames teacher absences on unions. No mention of degree of difficulty or plummeting teacher morale. No mention of differing working conditions. Inner City teacher absences are higher because of "contract language." How about running the numbers by some teachers before publishing such "analysis"?”

“That guy is my uncle. We have never had any affection for each other, and I think he's an overall contemptible human being. That being said, I totally agree with your analysis of the video. We have no idea what happened to cause the incident, and most people just assume that the security guard is on the side of righteousness. As awful a human as I think my uncle is, I have not personally known him to be violent. He's definitely belligerent, but belligerence is no excuse for pepper spray. I would have thrown some punches at that security guard, as well (solely based on what I saw in the video).”

“A realization I made after teaching in the inner city is that many of my students are "trying" to get a D. It's part of their code that meaningful effort in class is derided. These particular students take great pride in passing classes in which they didn't try, and they are not happy when they lose this game of "chicken."”

Larry Strauss on Jun 13, 2012 at 02:43:07

“I once had a young man ask, on the first day of class, "What I gotta do to get a D out this class?" I've had students who failed my class come back from summer school sneering at me because they got an A in the replacement class without doing anything except showing up most of the time. But I have never seen them nearly as proud of that as they are when I can coax one of those reluctant learners to make a legitimate effort and accomplish something real. Thanks for the comment.”

Yep. This is the perspective from which one gets the credibility to proclaim that "...it's all about race, class and inequity."

Sorry, but sainthood is reserved for Escalante, Gruwell, and those like them, who raised kids up DESPITE their parents not being able to pay $38k per year for tuition.”

That's why I know we should be mentoring him - not praising him. I would never let a situation get that escalated (now that I know better). I've never had a fight in my classroom because I know how to put out the fires before they start (thanks to spending 24/7 in the woods with kids who were kicked out of "normal" schools).”

“Experienced teachers know that this man handled the situation horribly. Doing something is much better than doing nothing, but this man did SO many things wrong. Why did he wait so long to say something? Shut up and sit down? Teachers make mistakes on their road to mastery, but thinking those mistakes are actually examples of good teaching? You people are insane.”

am10 on Oct 3, 2011 at 08:53:45

“Really? Every experienced teacher I know is just fine with how he handled it. He evaluated and took immediate control. Less than two minutes of scolding and on with the show. Let's put you in a classroom and see how it's done.”

Fremont Pathfinder on Oct 2, 2011 at 17:48:13

“Actually, he handled this just right and I am an experienced teacher. It's teachers like you who think you are all that who are the real problems. Monday morning quarterbacking? Typical.”

“Though I do question what took him so ling, I do not question his actions. He probably has good relationship with the students in his class, they respect him. My guess if the teacher was meek and pleaded with these students to "please sit down", they would have had him for lunch. When this teacher has to raise his voice, his students know he means business.”

sidnee on Oct 2, 2011 at 12:14:36

“I'm an experienced teacher (18+ years on the job) and I've seen teenagers act like they own the world. This teacher handled himself JUST FINE. He was watching the incident--you can see his reaction--like WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? Squashed it--didn't he? Sometimes you have to be blunt. We also don't know the backstory in that classroom--that may NOT have been the first time kids have interrupted learning. Come hang out in a hight school/junior high and see what happens. Then you'll understand. And it just doesn't happen in urban environments--my friend teaches in a wealthy suburban district. Teacher does ANYTHING the kids don't like--they threaten to bring in their lawyer.”

What We Don't Know About Our Students -- And Why We Don't Know It

Commented Sep 7, 2011 at 16:56:39 in Education

“Mr. Kohn, I read your stuff religiously because you have answers to questions that have been building up in my head during my 7+ years of teaching. Too many of us care more about controlling children than guiding them, but your books and articles are helping me become a better teacher each year.”

Laylahnajwa on Sep 8, 2011 at 15:53:39

“To guide is also to "direct", is it not? And yet that's one of the things this article implies is done 'instead' of "listening". Obviously they are not mutually exclusive (nor does the article imply so), but more importantly each side must be expected to listen, and one to heed.

Listening does not always equal acceptance of the ideas to which one listens. Part of being an adult is making yourself steer someone away from following unworkable ideas in situations that would make you *really cool* if you didn't bother to do so.”
