Blackface In French Vogue: Racy or Racist? (PHOTOS, POLL)

Blackface In French Vogue: Racy or Racist? (PHOTOS, POLL)

Commented Oct 15, 2009 at 16:00:58 in Style

“There are many stereotypes played out every place we look, but again it's the history that comes along with blackface. When I see a Muslim being portrayed as a terrorist in a movie, that is a stereotype that I as a Muslim face. I don't think there's anything wrong with having a character like that. But blackface is a different story. You cannot take away the history from its meaning.”

“The difference is the history that comes along with blackface. If there was no historical hateful meaning attached to it, then it wouldn't be a problem.”

Gay Rights Speech: What Should Obama Say Tonight?

Commented Oct 07, 2009 at 18:42:57 in Politics

“I'm really hoping this "big gay speech" will have substance to it. It's easy to say that gays/lesbians should be treated equally, but more effective to actually say what you will do about it.”

“He makes good speeches, no doubt about that. I still have hope for Obama comming through for us.”

Mothers Of Ethiopia Part II: Escaping Child Marriage

“It isn't culture or religion. I'm an Ethiopian-American, so believe me, I would know. Yes, some families do it, but it isn't that common. In fact, the last time I can think of my extended family ever doing something like this had to be about 40 years ago. That quite some time for it to be put out there now.

I don't like when people write articles on what SOME PEOPLE are doing and categorize it as if its part of the entire culture. There are many things done by SOME PEOPLE in every single country that isn't part of everybody's culture. We shouldn't assume that it is due to what certain people say or do. For example, look at our country. They say that baseball and apple pie are a part of the American culture...well, I was born and raised here and I must say that I've never eaten apple pie and never liked baseball or been to a game. So is it a part of the American culture? Maybe for some, but not for all and definitely not for me.”

Why It Matters that Adam Lambert is (Probably) Gay

Commented May 22, 2009 at 00:36:16 in Entertainment

“Then why did Adam make it so far? I'm so sick and tired of this argument being a reason why Adam lost! Why can't it simply be that people liked Kris much more so they kept on calling and texting? Of course naturally there will be a few that won't vote for Adam due to the fact that he might be gay. But aren't there other reasons why others may vote against Kris as well? You mentioned the "little girls," well Kris revealed early on that he's married...for most young girls when they really like a singer, their looks are a big part of it. Revealing you're married can only hurt you with the young girls. So what about that? What would you say if Adam won and us that wanted Kris said, "Oh, it's only because Kris is married!" It's lame...it's ridiculous...get over it.

**By the way, I'm not trying to be rude...I just think that argument should have gone away as soon as those pictures came out and people realized that it obviously wasn't affecting the voting, because he made it to the final 2.”

“Biden was speaking for himself and his family. Why is that so wrong? I know my mom and dad tell me the exact same things and I'm a grown woman. It's the protective nature of a parent, grandparent, etc. You don't want to see your loved one get sick, so his advice for HIS OWN FAMILY was expected and NORMAL! It's what people would tell their loved ones. If somebody thinks there's something wrong with him looking out for his family and their well-being really have issues of their own. Joe is doing a great job behind the scenes and as much as people may try to break him down and analyze every single word, he's still doing a fabulous job!”

Fox Attacks "Black President" While Defending "Magic Negro"

Commented Jan 27, 2009 at 02:13:07 in Media

“As a black person, I'm offended! "My President is Black"...are you kidding me? I saw the video that O'Reilly showed on his show and heard the disgusting and horrible comments made by Jay-Z and Jeezy. They are not people that I think represent the positive of the black community. They are people that contribute to the negative stereotypes. They need to fall back. And the funny thing is that people like Michelle and Barack wouldn't be accepted within most black communities. In the beginning there were many blacks that said Barack wasn't "black enough" which was horrible! I think Barack carries a positive message and he doesn't need ignorant songs such as that representing him. Yeah he's black, but who cares? Him being black won't stop you from losing your job...him being black won't stop your house from being foreclosed...seriously, who cares that he's black? There is the historical side of it, but the inauguration is over, so people get over the race factor. Let's focus on how he'll be as our president. And all of these ignorant songs and artists that only focus on RACE need to move on. Obama didn't focus on race, so it irritates me that they think that they should focus on race. It's not about race, so please don't defend that disgusting song. It's insulting as a black woman that voted not because of race; rather due to the issues and Obama's stance on issues.”

rock2casbah replied on Jan 27, 2009 at 05:22:08

“Who said Barack wasn't black enough? The news media reporting back to you what "black folks are saying"? I never heard that assertion and I live in Chicago and have seen President Obama amongst the constituency for over a decade. Strongly supported by not only the black community but a coalition of all demographics. I never heard that said EVER, amongst them. If there is any such assertion about "not being black ENOUGH" anyway.

Watch who and why some are presented as the final "opinion" of what ALL black people are saying.”

“Isn't anywhere near as bad? Apparently, you've never dealt with discrimination or funny looks because of your faith. I'm a Muslim American woman...born and raised right here in the United States...now although people never know I'm Muslim right off the bat, when I tell them it's another thing.

And you're foolish enough to believe people at the rallies haven't said "Death to Iran," yet they would say "Kill him!" to Obama or possibly Ayers? Come on! They've called Obama every word in the book, so don't be dumb enough to think they wouldn't attack people in other countries. The McCain supporters that have been shown to us are the most vile, hateful, and racist bigots I have ever seen. Please don't defend these people.”

“You're exactly right. There is absolutely no difference between the two, but many Americans fail to realize that. What I find crazy is that America is supposed to be all about freedom and equal rights, yet there are those that want to hold people back because of their faith. It's really sad. As a Muslim American woman, most people never even know I'm Muslim until I tell them. And once they find out, I get mixed reactions. Fortunately however, most people don't care and it's not a big deal. But I have gotten funny looks from others. But that's life I guess. You just can't change some people's minds. This kind of garbage is hurtful, but we can't be upset at everything we see. We have to take it and grow from it.”

“Obama has defended Muslims! On his last Larry King Live interview he said that it's an insult to many patriotic, hard-working Muslim Americans to call him a Muslim as if it's a bad thing. Please do some research rather than simply assuming. It's sad that you're feeding into this garbage that it seems as though Republican Muslims are spreading. They're all about voting for McCain even though his supporters have been the most anti-Muslim people I have ever seen and he has never denounced their comments. Obama is the FIRST presidential candidate to say that this is not just a Christian nation, but it is also a MUSLIM nation, a JEWISH nation, a HINDU nation, a BUDDHIST nation, etc. What other candidate would have dared to say that? He does have respect for all religions, so please don't listen to those that want to say otherwise that have no clue what they're talking about.

By the way, I'm also a Muslim American woman. And I've supported Obama from the start and I've never doubted his respect for Muslims.

One more thing...since we are both Muslim women, you should probably know that the National Association of Muslim American Women endorsed Obama recently. Now this group is a very conservative pro-life, pro-family kind of organization. That endorsement surprised me for that reason, but you should read a little bit about why they endorsed him. “I'm from Rural Nevada....near Reno and I'm voting for Barack Obama. This is the very first time I've really been interested in politics and I've volunteered for Barack for a long time now. Barack Obama has visited many many small rural towns here in Nevada and I've met and talked to him a couple of times...he is a great man. The county I live in is hot and heavy Republican, but this year...we've really been out in droves registering so many new voters..it's really incredible what a change Barack Obama has brought to our state. The Nuclear Waste Dump that McCain wants out here in Nevada is one reason I am against him....McCain wants us to immediately build 40 or 50 new nuclear plants....and where would that Nuclear waste be dumped? Out here in our back yeards....I say NO WAY to YUCCA mtn. ...Barack is against it as well. Sure those big wigs in Washington don't think people live out here in the desert....surprise...we do and were working hard to change Nevada from Red to BLUEEEEEEEEEEEE yeaaaaaaaaaaa!!!”

I love how Biden did show that there are fathers out there that are just as important as mothers. One of the things that I love so much about Biden and his family is that you always see the love and closeness. Even earlier today when he got off the plane with Jill, he held her hand the whole way down. They talk a lot about do the candidates relate to the average American, well their family values are just apparent to me.
