“Oh, more than 15 years. But I don't know whether you remember the Reagan presidency. Nancy Reagan was constantly compared to Marie Antoinette due to her perceived extravagance. I REALLY LIKE the Obamas and especially Michelle. I don't suggest she wears sack cloth, but I do think she needs to be mindful of the flack she will get.

I would like to see the Obamas set a good example and inspire people in a different way. You must have heard that moderation is the new cool??”

“I am rarely critical of the President and this is Thanksgiving, so I send him and his family my best wishes for a great day with friends and family.

My ancestors emigrated to the United States in 1700. They were farmers, anyway, but the parcel of land they got from the English was so barren it had been abandoned by the native tribe. However, through their own perserverance and the help and advice of the Meherrin people, they celebrated a feast after their first good harvest in 1703.

I think they would find it rather curious that Presidents would later give state banquets, with the First Lady wearing a gown made with silver and gold thread by 40 Indians, working round the clock.

Michelle looked fabulous, but when can Washington get back to basics?”

“Michelle asked Kahn to make a gown for her. She gave him instructions: India, chic, simple, but still very glamorous. Period.

He had the dress made in his family's shop in India in his way according to his artistic vision. She had no input (or idea) how he would make the dress. Why is she suddenly responsible for the way his family operates their business?

When you buy something, do you know who made it, how much they were paid and how long they worked on it?”

“Why the concern about going back to basics now? If the truth be told we should have gone back to basics 15+ years ago.”

“But isn't this because Palin struggles to define herself?

I liken Palin to the oracles. In Hellenistic culture, oracles were beautiful women who were thought to be inspired by gods. They babbled uninteligibly but were widely respected, because the people believed they had special gifts/powers of second sight. Nobody could understand what they were saying, so they construed the gibberish as what they wanted to hear.”

Curandera replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 22:34:09

“I don't know. The oracles I've seen in movies didn't sound like Judy Tanuda and say things like "you betcha" and wink at you. It kind of takes the whole aura out of it, doesn't it? Maybe in a Mel Brooks sort a way.”

“I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. … When he opened the Abyss, … out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions … They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months. They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon (Revelation 9:1-3, 10-11).
Lycia—a small country in southwest Turkey—also had an early connection with Apollo, where he was known as Lykeios, which some have joined to the Greek Lykos or ‘wolf’, thus making one of his ancient titles, “the wolf slayer.”

The Cumaean Sibyl (also known as Amalthaea), whose prophecy about the return of the god Apollo is encoded in the Great Seal of the United States, was the oldest of the Sibyls and the seer of the Underworld who in the Aeneid gave Aeneas a tour of the infernal region.

The Persian Sibyl was said to be prophetic priestess presiding over the Apollonian Oracle; though her location remained vague enough so that she might be called the "Babylonian Sibyl",”

“Hon, I'm a Catholic, and I'm telling you - crack down on the "cafeteria Catholics" and there will be very few of us left. The divorcees, adulterers, thieves, people who have IVF babies...how far do you want to go? What about people who don't go to confession? People who have sinful thoughts? Liars?

The Church needs to be less, not more judgmental. Christianity has three foundations: Love, tolerance and forgiveness. Some clergy seem to have forgotten this, so absorbed are they with the power of their position. Thank God not all of them are like that.”

“The Church is against a lot of things. They are against divorce. My sister was divorced and re-married in the Catholic Church. They are against IVF. It was actually classified as a mortal sin by John Paul II. Yet the Church turns a blind eye. Catholics practice birth control; the church turns a blind eye. Some Catholics do the most abhorrent things - even raping children - and the Church says "you are forgiven". Beat your wife, go to confession, take communion. Commit adultery, go to confession, take communion. Steal, lie, break every single one of the Commandments, go to confession, take communion.

But have an opinion which contradicts Church doctrine? Unforgiveable! What about Patrick Kennedy's Christian qualities? His concern for the poor and downtrodden? His charitable works? Does his Christian goodness count for nothing in the eyes of priests and bishops?

Technically, Mr Kennedy is a Catholic. He was baptised into the church, he was confirmed in the church. This Bishop is obliged to give him communion as far as I know. If anyone wants to correct me on that, feel free, but I have a feeling the Bishop is just posturing.”

“I'm a Catholic and personally pro-life but I'll be the first one to say this.

If the Catholic Church, or any religious sect tries to dictate policy by lobbying, withholding the eucharist or any other sacrament, then they need to lose their tax-free status TODAY. They need to make a choice - butt out of politics or get taxed on your income.

Secondly, through lots of study I know that not only do you not need a priest to give you the host but this is not what Jesus would have wanted. The Last Supper was a feast in the Passover tradition; for over a thousand years after that, Christians honored the tradition with feasts, i.e. full meals. The Roman Catholic Church actually BANNED this in 1432 as a method of "controlling" the rites of the eucharist! Against God's will and Christ's teachings they sought to separate the people from God, to make them dependent on organized religion to receive blessings, and in the process enrich themselves.”

“Listen up, tea baggers! You MUST KNOW somebody with a health insurance nightmare story to tell. There is no working class person I know who does not KNOW SOMEBODY who has had a horrible experience.

My dad worked all his life. He was a Teamster. He got cancer, had an operation, they screwed up (didn't tie off a bleeder), had another operation and 2 days into ICU they said, "Your insurance ran out". RAN OUT! Apparently, there was a cap on how much the insurance - which he had paid premiums for decades - would pay towards his treatment and hospitalization.

I was in my 20s. My sister was in her teens. My mom didn't earn much. What were we to do? We had to take him home, quit our jobs and tend to him ourselves with no training, no experience and the trauma of having to provide intensive care to our loved one.

And there is none of you who can tell me that situation doesn't totally suck!

You want to hear about the pregnant woman who was fired just because she was pregnant and therefore lost her health insurance and ended up with a $33,000 bill for an emergency C-section? And you folks call yourselves "pro-life"? Don't make me laugh!”

PigsOnSoma replied on Nov 23, 2009 at 16:35:15

“You miss the point. Obama's health care plan is not economically feasible. It will require that the government take over distribution and payment for health care, which means the country will do a combination of going bankrupt and having Canadian/British type health care, which would be immoral. It would be immoral because it's not necessary - the only reason for it would be to see that everyone got "equal" care. Bad, but equal, with no choice for betterment. Which brings us back to bankruptcy, which would happen even if we went to single payer. It's lose-lose.”
